I was stationed in Iwakuni in 76 -79. We did the usual sightseeing going to Miyajima, Hiroshima, and Iwakuni(Kintai bridge, castle). But In 1978 I bought a Canon camera and decided to do some traveling in Japan, and I am glad I did. Starting from Shin-Iwakuni, I took the Shinkansen and saw several cities and places. Some of them were Kyoto and Nara, Osaka, Himeji, Okayama, Fukuyama, Nagoya, Kokura, Matsuyama(Shikoku) etc. When I went to Kyoto and Nara, I usually stayed there for 3 days. I did not go to Tokyo, but I visited It some years later. There are other great places to see like climbing Mt. Fuji, Nikko, Kamakura, and even more. I know that Japan's railway lines are even better now, and I highly recommend that folks stationed In Iwakuni go out and see Japan. There Is a lot to see from great cities, temples, shrines, castles, its natural beauty, the food, and its great people. 🙂

I was stationed at the Naval Air base there, in 1956-57. Went to Kintai bridge many times. Very nice.

Y’all need to really show where to go and what there is to do off base. This was boring and didn’t show me really anything.

Stationed there in 1990. Good memories even though I was only a PFC. Wish I had more time to explore. Was fortunate to visit the Kintaiko Bridge, Hiroshima (rang the peace bell) and the friendly Japanese people.
