Man's name is Chief Warrant Officer Herschel Woodrow Williams. He was awarded the MoH at the Battle of Iwo Jima for actions "above and beyond the call of duty". He destroyed numerous Japanese pill boxes with his flame thrower. As a side note Legend Audie Murphy was only 5'-5", an inch shorter.

I never pinned Dad down about his staying home on the farm. I still have his draft card, he had an agricultural deferment. He had been farming, and was an established farmer with two daughters. But he also was only 5'5" tall, and 130 pounds. His stories of running farm and having a family during the war made it sound like fighting a war.

As lifelong WV citizen. I never had the honor of meeting Woody but talked countless people who did I worked at coal mines with countless war combat veterans mainly Vietnam war personnel even few WW-2 to Korea. I don’t think they could be any more of a citizen in WV that had so many nice things said about him as a person. He was just a down to earth very nice guy. Everybody talked about how nice of a guy he was. His military service career speaks for itself.

Fight is right! Col Barnum was the first active duty recipient of the MOH I ever met. So after meeting him I looked up his citation. He just walked into a buzz saw and came out alive. Was it bad or good luck? "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as Forward Observer for Artillery, while attached to Company H, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, Third Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against communist forces at Ky Phu in Quang Tin Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 18 December 1965. When the company was suddenly pinned down by a hail of extremely accurate enemy fire and was quickly separated from the remainder of the battalion by over five hundred meters of open and fire-swept ground, and casualties mounted rapidly, Lieutenant Barnum quickly made a hazardous reconnaissance of the area seeking targets for his artillery. Finding the rifle company commander mortally wounded and the radio operator killed, he, with complete disregard for his own safety, gave aid to the dying commander, then removed the radio from the dead operator and strapped it to himself. He immediately assumed command of the rifle company, and moving at once into the midst of the heavy fire, rallying and giving encouragement to all units, reorganized them to replace the loss of key personnel and led their attack on enemy positions from which deadly fire continued to come. His sound and swift decisions and his obvious calm served to stabilize the badly decimated units and his gallant example as he stood exposed repeatedly to point out targets served as an inspiration to all. Provided with two armed helicopters, he moved fearlessly through enemy fire to control the air attack against the firmly entrenched enemy while skillfully directing one platoon in a successful counterattack in the key enemy positions. Having thus cleared a small area, he requested and directed the landing of two transport helicopters for the evacuation of the dead and wounded. He then assisted in the mopping up and final seizure of the battalion's objective. His gallant initiative and heroic conduct reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and United States Naval Service.[2] /S/Lyndon B. Johnson @@slimesizecounts5873

My dad fought in Iwo Jima. He was wounded and spent one year in the hospital. The war and so much death of his fellow marines, ruined his life! He became an alcoholic and it was so horrifying my mother had to leave to protect us! He was a sweet, beautiful young boy/man and cancer later settled in his wounded bones and he died at the age of 46. A broken man ... and at the age of 79, the thought of my innocent, beautiful father, still makes me break down in tears!!! WAR IS HELL!

This is the generation that raised us. My Mom was British, My dad a black American. Both of my Grandfather's served in WW2 (Royal British Navy, and US Navy, respectfully) My father went on to serve in Vietnam, what chaps me is the way my grandfather was treated by this country, after giving so much. It's overlooked and brushed aside and I'm tired of it. The country isn't great, it's people are. America needs to get back on track. I can't believe we have the level of disunity we do, and that our government fuels it. White people Don't owe my family anything but the US Government sure as hell does, Our government owes all of us. what's happening now is shameful. The way our veterans are used and treated us shameful. What's happened to our military is sad as well, our culture has been infiltrated and destroyed and our government is complicit. What the hell happened to us? What did these men fight for? I may come off as angry, but I'm just sad.

God bless Woody!! I can't tell you how many purple heart's and awards for bravery I have seen and held in my hands. My mother is the youngest of 12 children. She had 5 brothers in World War 2 at the same time!! Those "boys" were only high school KIDS! They weren't even able to graduate and all their schooling was lost! They said ppl would ask how my grandmother dealt with her having 5 of her children in the war and the fact that probably more of her son's would be called for duty. People said and she even said she continually walked around with a prayer on her lips😢 The mail was sensored and my grandparents didn't even know where in the WORLD their boys were or if they were dead or alive, they knew NOTHING!! I still have a big box of letters my uncles sent home. The letters are usually short, but they are amazing to read.... I wish I could have hugged and told each one there that I loved them and was so very thankful for each one of them!! My unlces, Woody & people from their generation SAVED the world, WORLD... Let that sink in "WORLD"🌎 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🫡

My grandmother had two sons in WW11. They stayed gone for the whole time they were in the military. All 4 of her sons served, and the 2 were in the war. They said she prayed until her knees were calloused.

Until your last breath on this earth. Don't you ever forget that you're a hero. Thx for standing up for humanity. I don't think I could've done what you did to begin with, let alone what you did once there.

I salute you sir. My grandfather was division 4 Marines, and landed on the beaches of iwo jima, and was from West Virginia too. A man, besides my father, who taught me what it was to be a man. Gentle to my family, honorable in my business, and firm in my faith.
