They were in the 80s and 90s. Maybe in the early 00s. Now it just is a "show" car which is way to expensive. That G-Wago today is wjay happend especially through other countries like China and the US that these cars are what they are now. Just to show "hey look I drive an expensive G-Wagon". In Germany this definitely today the same. There are barley Hunters left who could afford one...

I was in the Dutch army when they were gradually replacing the Land Rover Defender for the Mercedes Benz G and i got to drive both 😊. They were both totally utilitary, but still so different. The G was so much more comfy in every possible way; suspension, sound, seats, sitting space (elbows, butt, legs, feet), shifting gears (two fingers easy)...Wow, what a difference! I like both, but for daily driving the G is king.

I actually took my driving lessons as a conscript in the Dutch army ('94) in the Mercedes Benz G (a 290GD if I recall correctly), around the time they where introduced to the military driving schools. The first one I entered only had 2000km on it. So pretty new. I still have the Mercedes driving licence lying around somewhere. Impressively capable vehicles.

It was a cooperation between Mercedes Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch and until 2000 they were sold here in Austria as "Puch G". They are built in Graz/Austria. Steyr-Daimler-Puch also made the Haflinger and Pinzgauer, some of the most capable offroaders, so the offroad stuff for the G came from them. In the Austrian military they were replacements/additions to the old Pinzgauer, and I drove both the Pinzgauer and the 230G, a 2.3Liter inline4 petrol engine, no powersteering, no electric stuff, all manual. Nothing inside you couldn't hose down to get rid of the dirt. It had just above 90HP but offroad that didn't matter, it was awesome. The Logo you saw at 23:09 is from Steyr-Daimler-Puch.

12 years ago, I came across a military one from the Dutch National Reserve forces at some barracks. I think it was a 240D from 1977 and it had 2.000 miles on it. As they are stored dry and well maintained, the car was in perfect condition. Pro tip, all government non-weaponised properties that is are movable, among which these things, sometimes get auctioned by the government by the service called "Domeinen". Pro tip 2: The military versions can even run (not very well) on kerosene which is a NATO requirement.

Just pull the floor plugs and drain the water out. The norwegian version had webasto engine heaters, soft top, foldable wind screen. Curtain in front of the radiator that you can pull up from the inside. It also has pipe connectors and valves in front for externally heating the engine, ad an electric block heater as well. I used to drive a long wheelbase when stationed as the personal chauffeur of the Chief Medical Officer of the 'Staf en stafcompagnie van 13 Gemechaniseerde Brigade'. During exercises I drove the long wheelbase as a radio equipped command vehicle (field taxi for the Brass) or the ambulance variant (I was trained as a medic/ambulance driver). Most if not all versions in the Dutch army were inline 5 cylinder, 2.9L diesels (2,874 cc/175.4 cu in).

My parents bought a long wheelbase station wagon of these new when it came out. Two years later, my mother did a u-turn with it without checking the rear view mirror on the driver’s side first. That was a mistake, because there was a tram coming up from behind. The tram‘s stopping distance was only marginally improved by the car’s contribution, but incredibly, my mother was unhurt and the car, although it was clearly a write-off, did still drive, although it did a bit better on left-hand corners than right-handers. It was sold off to Africa, and I am quite certain that after a bit of artisanal bodywork, it was fit to carry on for a happy second life.

Your first "Puch" pronounciation was perfect. I am so impressed by your understanding of german pronounciation. The G-wagon was developed by Puch, an austrian company and MB in cooperation. The german military received a few models from MB, but due to the high cost of the G wagon the german military decided to buy 'VW Iltis' instead. I was born 1983, and had a g wagon as a toy, when I was a child. I always only pictured them as super capable offroad vehicles. Only in the 2000s they started to transform into show off SUVs.

Originally the G-Wagon Series starting from 1979 on, mostly developed by Steyr-Puch at Austria because there sat the Allwheel Drive specialists of Europe in 1970s. These G-Wagon were produced under Nutzfahrzeug Sparte at Mercedes as utility light trucks, the seats were with MB-Tex or simple Cotton Fabric plus Rubberleather. Real Leather was super extra and had to be wished personally at the dealer, until 1994or 1996 it was this way, then Mercedes split the model range into utility vehicles and luxury jeep vehicles. Today only the luxury models survived.

Basic price in 1979 for a 230G (4 cylinder, gas 90 hp or 102 hp) was 29,990.20 DM 240GD (4 cylinder, diesel 72 hp) was 31,470.50 DM The average income in 1979 was 27.685 DM

What is that supposed to be, an SUV? This is the kind of vehicle that can't do anything right. Looks like an off-road vehicle, but reaches its limits extremely quickly off-road. Looks like a spacious station wagon - but often has a lower load capacity or a smaller interior than a comparable real station wagon. An SUV is simply a lifestyle product and in truth a dazzler. To compare an off-road vehicle like the G-Model with such a boulevard shopping cart is already crudely wrong.

Those seats in the first one are the real deal and are probably made of M-B Tex. The material is extremely durable and was also used in M-B sedans. Edit: You are correct about those wheels. They are aluminum and about 20 years newer than the vehicle. They were typically aluminum colored not black. Also you might have noticed the two red indicator lights on the dash for the locking diffs. There's only two because that model is part-time 4 wheel drive so its transfer case provides a "locked" 50/50 front-rear power split when in 4x4 hi or lo.

It's quite what happened to the Humvee: the moment Arnold showed up with it, the upper class and wannabes embraced it and it turned into a status symbol and people forgot about its roots. The G-class is more or less the little brother of the Unimog and there's a great docu about its development at Puch (where it's manufactured) in Graz and testing in the 70ies. It has also been produced by Peugeot for the french army. The last upgrade in fact changed a lot and while former models were based more or less on the 1979 construction, the current one is another development.

You should also check out the Volkswagen Iltis. Both the Mercedes G-Wagon and the VW Iltis were developed in the 1970s. VW was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time and to help the company, the contract was initially awarded to VW. They produced the Iltis (the German word for Polecat) for various armies in Europe, Africa, Asia and also for the Canadian military. The VW Iltis replaced the VW 181, which you will know in the States as "The Thing". In 1980, a VW Iltis won the Paris Dakar Rally. I drove the Iltis myself in the German military in the 1980s. You always had to drive with four-wheel drive engaged and the maximum permitted speed was 50mph because the car was unstable after that. The four-wheel drive engaged was to somewhat prevent the tendency to roll over if you took corners too quickly. However, you always had to drive very carefully, especially on tight corners. Due to this shortage, the Mercedes G-Wagon, which the German military also calls the Mercedes Wolf, was gradually purchased. The VW Iltis is actually an Audi. And the all-wheel drive technology of the Iltis was the starting signal for the development of the Audi Quattro models in the 1980s. As far as off-road capabilities were concerned, I at least had no complaints. The Iltis never let me down once.

But as far as I can remember all the ones we had were soft top convertibles with some sturdy rollbars under the canopy, which would probably be even cooler to have in the US...😁 In any case you would need the Jerry can holder on the back and the super high radio antenna. With the US gun laws you probably even could get some H&K G3 rifles and put the gun rack to good use or mount a MG3 on top or something...😅

Puch - or at the time Steyr-Daimler-Puch - was a Austrian company specialised in all terrain vehicles, 4x4 drive train technology and such. Today its called Magna Steyr. Puch designed the drive train for the Mercedes G (G stands for "Gelände" (engl. terrain)) models. Yes, GD stands for "Gelände Diesel".

Model G was concepted as a military car.. The original has a multi-fuel engine. you can drive with Diesel, Sunflower oil ore Terpentin and much other fuels.. At the beginning of the 1990s, the decision fell on Daimler-Benz AG, which had applied with the Mercedes-Benz 250 GD from the W 460 series. The order included the delivery of 12,500 vehicles. After a competition to find a name within the Bundeswehr, the new vehicle was given the internal name “Wolf”. The G-Class is used, among other things, as a carrier vehicle for the 120 mm mortar, as a carrier for the Milan weapon system or as a medical vehicle.

Puch developed the G in cooperation with Mercedes. In the early 70´s it was produced only in Austria an the Austrian and German military used it as the Puch G (G for "Gelaendewagen" that means simply Off-Road vehicle). If you are a offroad freak i strongly recommend watching (and may be reacting) to the Puch Pinzgauer. Every military personnel I met (and there were many nations - I was a UN soldier for 8 years) said that the Pinzgauer is the best off-road vehicle they have ever driven.

The G-Wagon is a utility car, a working horse. So they have been around in Germany for a long time, but hardly ever on the streets, like regular cars. Using it to show off is fine (you always can show off in *any* Mercedes 😁), but it is like putting flourishes on a bull.

Steyr-Puch, the company that makes the drivetrain for the Unimog and the G Merci. When they made Jeep in Europe, they made that too. That's the company that was bought up by Daimer

"Back in the old days", G-Class Mercedes vehicles (G-Wagon) were also quite rare in private hands in Germany, except for veterinarians working mainly in rural areas or on farms, as well as foresters and hunters, they were more likely to have a G-Class. Otherwise, you mostly saw them with the THW (Germany’s Federal Agency for Technical Relief, part of disaster response) or with "Y-Tours," the joking name for a travel organizer, as the German military repeatedly sent convoys through the country and their license plates start with a "Y." Nowadays, the glossy G-Class vehicles have become more common, much like in the U.S. However, they’re still relatively rare, as most people tend to prefer SUVs from Audi, BMW, Porsche, ...

my father was actually a test driver for these when they were developed. and he says, that the new ones are comparably shit to the technology and stuff they used to test back then. he used to wrok for the BAZ in Bratislava which used to develop and test military vehicles after WW2. and trust me the stuff he drove usually never made it to production, but the capability of most of them was just insane.

we used to have (and still have) the Austrian Version (sort of the original as it was a collab with Mercedes by Daimler) which was named "Puch G" in the Armed Forces as smaller offroad vehicles... and it was funny to have a ride in them (the only one that was even funnier was the Pinzgauer) by the way the company that developed and built the G for Mercedes was "Steyr Daimler Puch" (previously Puch and Daimler Puch) which actually had the green and white logo (representing the colours of Styria) however, it is hard to get a good used one that is still road legal... only chance to get "newer" ones is as former "accidents" aka. rolled over ones that were "beyond repair" for the Armed Forces or from private owners that have rebuilt theirs the ones you can get on surplus auctions over here are pricy and most of the time in a not so good condition (and often when you get a cheaper priced one it basically turns out to be a 50% rebuild purchase where you have to rebuild it) but still... I love to see them on the roads (and even more to see them being used as actual offroad vehicles)

In the first one, those wheels are in fact original but those g wagons also come with steelies. Although, I'd suggest those type of wheels are more common for civilian g wagons. Not sure if that exact one is a real military variant or not but even some military g wagons came with those wheels. The thing is that most of the military g wagons are soft tops.

The G-Wagon was designed and manufactured by PUCH (Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Austria, in cooperation with Mercedes (engines). Main customer were the military. Later civil variants were added, such as the Puch G "Worker" (shown at 20:30, short base, 2 doors, canvas top) for rough use like in forests. Problem for cilivian use was the high price. When Puch dissolved, Mercedes took over. Production and development is still in Graz. Later they shifted to the well-known luxury car.

Lies. Completely engineered and designed by Mercedes, originally for the Shah of Iran, but when the Shah was deposed they decided to sell it to the German military and security forces. Steyr is just the company that assembled them. They categorially DID NOT engineer or design the Gwagen.

The "G" was developed by Mercedes Benz together with Steyr-Daimler-Puch (Austrian Car/Bike/Tractor conglomerate), and was sold as "Puch G" in certain countries. These have the logo you saw at the end, which is the "Puch" logo. The "G" stands for "Geländewagen" which literally translates to "terrain wagon", but in meaning it is just "off-road car".

I find it quite funny that you have had this license plate from Graz in your background for a long time but you only now are checking out the G-Class (as we call it), which is built here in Graz :). Also, the G-Class was not meant as a luxury car and they are also not really that comfortable to drive compared to proper luxury SUVs. They have improved all of that over the past years, but just because they have been perceived as luxury vehicles (and eventually offered as such) doesn't mean they were meant to be that way :). If you wanna see the really crazy versions you gotta look at the 6x6 :D.

In the Swedish army the Geländerwagen for a long time was called "Eländewagen" (elände= misery in Swedish) after the first experiences of the car at Swedish forces international missions (UN) at the 1990's. I guess the quality and durability for military use was an issue at some generations.

It was named "off-road vehicle" (direct translation) for a reason. 🤭✌ Its quite a big difference between the military g-versions and the civilian ones. You saw Loads of these in Norway in the 80-90's thanks to some very beneficial tax-exempts (and the Dot-Com bubble), and of course all our military branches had Geländewagon (and Volvo, and some US-trucks). You should be able to get some used one still, but they will be pricy in "drivable" standard. LOTS of rust as on al MB's.

you can tell the difference between a G that is just for display of lifestyle and one that is actually used as intended by one simple thing: the rims. If they're aluminium, it's just a show-off. Btw, the one in the first video is probably an old model, as it doesn't have air bags. Maybe it's a refurbished one from the Bundeswehr. You see those or more recent versions of them rather in the rural regions where they are in their element. In cities, not so much, as they are rather bulky and not exactly useful as a minivan or something alike.
