I work in a used car dealership and we currently have 3 in stock. They get parked out the front next to the new Mustangs, Mercedes Benzs and Audis. Some still have manual wind up windows and non electric rear view mirrors and they are 2022 models. My brother used to own the 1993 ute model and would drive directly through the bush running over trees and giant rocks like it was nothing. We drove it through water up to the top of the steering wheel, dried the seats out for an hour and drove it 4 hours home. The best thing about not changing for years means spare parts are nearly everywhere and most towns have an expert or two if anything ever (haha, good joke) breaks on them.

The troopcarrier version has dual diesel tanks…..petrel (gas) not available….180 litre capacity giving about 1200km range. Oh and don’t forget in the GXL version featured front and rear lockers are standard! The reason why the 70 series looks like it is from decades past is because it actually is! The 70 series was introduced as a new model in 1984, and was considered the latest and greatest new Landcruiser at the time. Newer, more modern Landcruiser models eventually came along to replace this "antique" however these new ones were not deemed to be as capable and had become more soft-road luxury SUV's than hard-core off-road workhorses, so Toyota made the decision to continue parallel production of the 70 Series. It received a facelift to the front end in 2007 however it is essentially the same as the vehicle that was first released 40 years ago (obviously with some engine and safety upgrades). They are actually also available in LHD and are sold around the world, however for some reason aren't a dealer import to the US.

I drove brand new ones of these for work around car yards, and they really are no-frills. Depending on the options the customer chose, some of these 70 series don't even come with radios. They are as bare-bones as they can be. Some do have a more modern infotainment system as well with built in Bluetooth and GPS, But they were probably around 25-30% of the new cars. There isn't much space in them, they're all manual transmission, and they handle like 20 ton trucks.

The rear axle in the diesel engine comes shorter than the front axle. 2- fuel consumption in both diesel and gas engines is very very very bad even when compared with land cruiser 200 series

These may start declining in sales in Australia and eventually be phased out. I work in a Government role and we have just replaced an entire fleet (~98) of these 4.5 V8 Diesel 79 series troop carriers...all were low milage, modified extensively but they don't meet ANZCAP 5 star ratings and that is now a requirement for all government vehicles. This meant changing to modified 200s cruisers (thankfully all V8's also) at significant expense. It's likely private contractors in the mining and energy markets will also implement policies requiring 5 star ratings for the entire fleet. I have a pic of one of our rolled 79s Troop Carriers and it's not pretty, with flattened A, B & C pillars. We can't in good conscience keep using them.

These trucks are really cool. Here in The Netherlands, the complete country is flat and there are roads everywhere, we do not need these. For hauling stuff around we use eurovans like the Fiat Ducato, not pick-up trucks like in the US. And another thing: emissions. Taxes on new cars are sky-high anyway here, but they also depend on CO2-emissions. This Toyota emits a lot of CO2, so taxes will be immense. A comparison: the Ford Explorer is available in the US from $36000. Here in The Netherlands, we can only get the PHEV model because of emissions. The closest to that in the US is the Explorer Limited hybrid, which starts at $47000 (plus VAT). The Explorer PHEV will set you back € 73000 plus VAT here in The Netherlands! A less expensive example is the Toyota Corolla Hybrid. That starts at $23000 plus VAT in the US, and starts at € 27000 plus VAT in NL. If the same tax system is applied to this Land Cruiser, it will cost around €100000 or more. That is simply far overpriced for what it is. It will still be very cool of course.

Sure... let's pay $70k+ for a vehicle that has manual windows, optional AC and a 90's outdated interior 🙄 yeah no thanks I'll stick with my Dmax in disguise ( Isuzu built Holden Colorado )

You keeping said the Toyota FJ70 was built in the 90s how about they built it in the 70s ? I think the US Amry having the Toyota FJ70 in their fleets. Sadly, most of the an Americans don't buy the Toyota FJ70 because of no modern technologies in it. At one time the Toyota FJ70 had an automatic transmission. I heard the COE of the Toyota North America thinking about bringing the Toyota FJ70 to the US market for the next gen of the Toyota FJ70. Maybe the next gen Toyota FJ70 will be super modern style no more old school style.

Toyota closed the order books for 12 months. Massive supply issues. So popular they struggle to supply. Cheaper new than second hand because of the wait.

If you got the money the older 75s and 76s should be old enough to meet your import laws and IMO there better then the 79 simple and reliable Straight six cant go wrong with a 1HZ and if you need more power 1HD-FTE the V8 makes awesome power sounds nice but damn it eats fuel even when you ECO turn it to hell its still eats fuel like its towing the whole time with the right mods the 1HD-FTE makes just as much power uses far less fuel and sounds like a semi when it in the low RPM range. Its not easy but a bit easier then modern cars a LHD conversion can be done you can get LHD ones from UAE but there mostly petrol. As for the manual its nice but light duty a lot of older ones you'll see with a heavy duty clutch and a reinforced 5th gear as that tends to blow out with the power we are putting down these days. something i am look forward to is an 8HP swap kzbin.info/aero/PL0EMNJD2Ijw6Xt1bXK3ofpLAuGdR8ykX6 you can make it act like a manual then kick it in to auto when your feeling lazy or your arthritis is acting up i love a manual but having early onset arthritis in my legs driving manual for long periods of time is no fun and on cold days my legs are screaming for an auto cant even get out of the drive way and i feel like my leg where cut off an i am only 25. Also the stock power numbers are so low because of our laws how much we can tow is so limited pumping more power out of the engine is pointless we do get those bigger American UTE's here like RAM 2500's and 3500's but there limited to about 1/2 there factory rating the RAM 3500 can do up to 16 tonne(37,000lb) her in Australia its limited to 8 tonne (17,000lb) thats under the newest of laws that we hardly know anything about under the old laws you where lucky to get 6 tonne.

Great video. Don't worry, Ian, I'm drooling too. It's the old maxim..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it", so why mess with something that works? Toyota listens to its customer base and knows what off-roaders want and need. Ian, I am sure you can relate to this but when you're out in the "back of beyond", especially in the vast interior of Australia you need simplicity and reliability because if something does break (which is pretty rare in these kinds of vehicles) you need to be able to do makeshift repairs until you can get the rig back to town. With modern cars you just cannot do that. When I worked in exploration, Tojos are all we had. You just knew you could depend on them in the rugged outback.

If it ain't broke don't "Fix" it. One of my customers has had one for 20 yrs, it's really abused but Well maintained, it's never broken down just damaged by rough use. As he once said to me " What else could i buy to do what this does" ????

To put it quiet simply you can thank the Minning industry and other trades and emergency services for these vehicles from Toyota , Here in Australia Mining is HUGE as we provide 1/3 of the worlds Iron Ore amongst all the other rare earth minerals and when you work in the Mines as I do you realise what the hell is going on because every vehicle you see in the mines is a Toyota they proved themselves way back with the 40 series in the late 70;s as tough and reliable ALL the mining companies buy these buy the shipload constantly renewing the fleet because mining is HELL TOUGH on vehicles .!

Looking at the engine specs, it seems like the Toyota engine is underperforming against other offerings. I would be disappointed with the specs myself. 4.5l turbo V8? Most other diesels are making close to that but with less cylinders and getting better fuel economy. I understand that they are reliable but so are other engines.

TLC 70 series is quite popular in Mongolia and is widely used in mining companies. Plus, you can still get a brand new one from the dealers.

Actually, right now, no one can buy one new. Toyota has stopped taking orders until it can catch up with demand. There's all sorts of rumours that they maybe changing the engines that they'll come with.
