We love IXL as a supplement. We have been using it for years in traditional school, but now more consistently with homeschool. I have never explored some of these features. Thank you

Also question, is there learning coaches or teachers like the other ones? or is this a thing they can do by themself?

Ixl is for them to do by themselves. To me it's more of a practice tool than actual teaching.

I have figured out, the more skills your child masters( gets 100%) then the assessment section test them on that skill. My son who had ADHD unmanageable in the past, has finally matured and learned to focus. His math and English assessment score were like 20, because he never took the assessments. Now after taking assessment test( 5 to 8 questions a week. ( Plus his skills he has mastered) he's at 170 assessment score almost through 2nd grade! Woot

When my son was in school, we use this program as a supplement, which was provided by the school system. He enjoyed it and he spent a lot of time on it like he said it is not a teaching tool. It is really a supplement to other teaching the way, I might be doing this in my home school is having this program as part of our daily exercises will have teaching in another program and then use this to supplement that teaching.

Great video. Thanks for taking the time to review and give your thoughts. I am looking for a complete maths teaching solution that teaches maths from the very beginning right through to the most advanced maths. I see what you are saying, and I have seen others say it, that IXL does not really teach the topics, but it provides a well laid out, extensive set of practice questions, with some nice functionality eg presenting one question at a time, the white board for workings etc. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for something that actually teaches the maths prior to having to try to answer practice questions. Khan Academy seems to be the same as IXL, it has an extensive list of topics but they are almost entirely just practice questions, so you need to know HOW to answer questions, before you can actually try to use these services. IXL is better laid out and has better functionality that Khan, both have an extensive list of topics covered, Khan goes further, into the University level than IXL does. I do like the way IXL relates the topics back to the recommended curricula of your local area. I am in New South Wales here in Australia but mine is included. I really want something that is as extensive and is laid out as well as these two services, but that actually teaches you HOW to do the problems. I don't want to have to find 38 different text books, and manually search for you tube videos on each individual mathmatical topic and try to piece together my own teaching material. I find I am floundering because I don't personally know maths, and yet I am having to construct my own lessons, lesson material, lesson plan so I can eventually have a go at these practice questions on services like IXL, Khan Academy or the various maths preparation/NAPLAN study books (e.g. www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/c/education/books/workbooks-reference-books/numeracy-textbooks-workbooks). I wish someone who knew what they were doing could put together a complete course. Is there such a thing do you know? I would say shut up and take my money if there was! As a separate question? One question I had about IXL is that we can see from their extensive list of topics covered, what they include in their lessons. Do we know what they are missing (if anything)? Do they cover everythign from K-year 12? Or are there topics that we will have to pick up elsewhere. Thanks again for your thorough lovely videos.

I believe IXL is aligned to the standards in each state in the US. I am not sure as far as International standards go. As for other programs, have you tried Study.com? That's a good one for 3rd through 12th grade. A lot of homeschool families also like Teaching Textbooks and CTC Math. I'm actually surprised you didn't like Khan Academy as I think their videos are really good. There is also another free program called CK-12 that you may like. They even include a free AI tutor to enhance your experience.

Time for learning is a bit babyish huh? IXL may be less so, but they only have actual lessons for math. The rest of the subjects it's just more practice. Have you tried Khan Academy? I just did a video on that one, and it's free which is nice.

My question is, this work seems to just ask the question, and then tell them if they were incorrect how to do it. Why doesn't it have a video or teaching and then ask the question. Am I missing something?

Does iXL automatically adjust levels if a student is struggling with concepts? For example, if you put your child in a specific level of math but they arent doing well, will it give them problems at a lower level to work on? Or the opposite willit give them harder questions if they are doing really well?
@AmandaMelrose
@AmandaMelrose Ай бұрын
If they get questions wrong it will ask if they want to try an easier problem. You can also have them do the recommended skills which are based on their performance. And if they do the diagnostic arena then it recommends skills to help them improve where they need it.

new to your channel and I'm super overwhelmed. I have a 15yo that I decided to homeschool here in TX. I know all the laws but just trying to figure out what to use because its a lot of things he should have learned but doesn't know. @naomigarcia3438 You got it mama, just trust yourself! It will get better, no one knows your children better than you and you are a perfect teacher for them. Just give yourself some Grace and take it one day at a time. When I get overwhelmed with homeschool we take a field trip to the museum or zoo. They have free and discounted days as well. Go to the park or go outside for a walk. Then try again the next day!

What a disappointment - I just got a support email from IXL "IXL is a supplemental program designed to support and reinforce the curriculum used by your child's school or home-schooling program. We are not an accredited school or university, nor are we authorized to verify or issue school credits. However, IXL is aligned to your state's learning standards" I signed up my son and he worked in this for 2 hours so that he could get credit for classes for the 9th grade since I will be pulling him from school.
@AmandaMelrose
@AmandaMelrose 4 ай бұрын
Most online programs will tell you the same. Only an actual school can issue credits. I have a video on my channel that explains this. However, if you're in the US and planning to homeschool all of high school, you'll be able to issue a diploma and transcript yourself. Hope this helps!

I am a student who has been forced to use IXL since 5th grade. And I am going to give my honest opinion. I hate this website. All it does is make you feel dumber than you already are. And that isn't even the worst part. Our teachers would usually give us about 5-7 to do every single week and I still remember crying because of how annoying they were. Even our TEACHER was like "guys they aren't that hard" and then she tried an IXL question and got it WRONG. This website is the definition of money greed and garbage. I hate this website and I have made my decision that it sucks.

I'm not sure where these people who love the program came from - Mars possibly. This is the most negative and punitive program I have seen as an educator. The penalties are so huge for incorrect answers and so minimal for correct answers, students just give up "while they are ahead" because trying to continue to understand and learn is too costly point/grade wise. This certainly doesn't encourage students to keep trying and it's o.k. to make mistakes. I have a very conscientious student who is having these assigned through the public school system and she winds up in tears after 3 hours of trying to get enough points to have an acceptable score. I have only seen the 9th grade language arts modules so can't speak to math but we had 3 masters level educated professionals with good language arts skills in the room with her trying to complete a module and it took us 3 hours to get a 100% in addition to the hour she had already worked. As a former home school parent and current foster care mother, I would never buy this program.
@AmandaMelrose
@AmandaMelrose 3 ай бұрын
Wow that's terrible, I've never thought of it in terms of scoring. For homeschoolers I recommend it for the assessment portion, identifying and helping to close learning gaps. Is the program for schools different than for home use, or is it the same?
