It has been my earworm for the last week. I'm not a religious person, but appreciate the love and light of this musical.

This musical was not religious. Don't let Christ-stains try to appropriate it. They are soulless as well as mindless.

I got to lead this song in a college production in 2011. It came to my heart this last weekend when a shooting occurred on the street I grew up on. It's terrible when a loss of life brings people together, because we should have been united in the first place.

In the movie, this was played as they frolicked thru the streets. Loved their joy. This version gets me right in that hopeful place, that somehow we can somehow overcome all the tragedies of today, and find our way back.

Though the original version written in 1972 for the Broadway show has a more jaunty, jovial tone, composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, re-wrote this version after the Los Angeles Riots, in 1993, inspired by the ordinary people (lead by Edward James Almos), who just started to gather in mass days after the riots and begin to clean up the streets.

Out of the ruins and rubble, Out of the smoke, Out of our night of struggle Can we see a ray of hope? One pale thin ray reaching for the day... We can build a beautiful city. Yes, we can(Yes, we can) We can build a beautiful city. Not a city of angels, But we can build a city of man. We may not reach the ending, But we can start. Slowly but surely mending, Brick by brick, Heart by heart. Now, maybe now, We start learning how. We can build a beautiful city. Yes we can(Yes, we can). We can build a beautiful city. Not a city of angels, But we can build a city of man. When your trust is all but shattered. When your faith is all but killed. You can give up bitter and battered, Or you can slowly start to build! A Beautiful City. Yes, we can.(Yes, we can) We can build a beautiful city, Not a city of angels, But finally a city of man!

This song will forever be in my memory.. I auditioned for my first community theater play with this song and got the part! I'll always look back on this song when I audition for other shows. No joke, I walked into that audition with no prior experience (besides singing lessons for 3/4 of a year) and came out victorious. Best part of all, I auditioned for a VERY hard musical.. Sweeney Todd to be exact.
