Isn’t the maths at the end a little bit wrong? If it’s it’s 60k per 5 mins, that means it’s 60,000 x 12 as 5x12=60 and there’s 60 mins in an hour… so 60k x 12 = 720k not 1.2m?

Don't just dig straight down from a node (iron, nitrate, coal, etc.), they're there to show you where to dig. There's usually a good seam of material around the area. where ever there is a sand/gravel mix under the dirt or in the rock is the sign that you are in a seam and mine the area. Much more efficient than dig down, tunnel and hope that you eventually hit a resource.

I was super excited when I finally crafted my LVL 5 Auger. So excited I just kept going straight down. The second I stopped to figure out how to get back up I heard a zombie sniffing around. Apparently it was a screamer (the 1st I ever dealt with), whose scream attracted a few zombies and… another screamer. About 8 zombies later I finally ran out of stamina and they had their dinner. My Auger has sat in a box ever since. I know it’s far more efficient so I’ll eventually try it again, but all my initial holes will be done via pickaxe. Once the mineshaft is closed off, then I’ll use the Auger to immediately make enough room to fight.

My mines are a little overkill. I essentially make a square fort with no ceiling around a node, or two nodes if next to each other. Then I dig everything within that square, making staircases downward from the edge of the square. Not very efficient, but mines can't collapse if there is nothing on top of it too collapse.
@AJay222852 жыл бұрын
Another tip I find that might be worth mentioning (although takes some resources to set up) is put an SMG turret facing you're hatch/door. That way screamers that will inevitably show up when using the auger will be quickly taken care of allowing you to mine away freely. I've also had wondering hordes come to investigate. So when you hear the turret firing consistently you know you're in for a surprise up top if you go on out.

I tend to place shafts down every 8 blocks. Eventually covering a whole area with shafts down every 8 blocks. Great for finding what’s below but also for stability. Then add cross beams every 5 levels down. Every 5 so if you turn it into a floor you can still reach the blocks above you. Though I do still recommend removing blocks high to low even if working on a level that’s supported.

Awesome, was wanting a vid on mining. In a19 (and presumably in a20) the auger would yield only 75% of a nodes resources compared to the pickaxe. The auger is till faster, and since there is a ton of ore on a map there is no reason to not use the auger unless calling in screamers is your main concern. If you dig down about 25-30 levels underground you can mine in sneak mode with a pickaxe and not attract attention (pickaxe is my goto just for the reduced heat generation). You can generally use one tank of fuel with an auger and not call in a screamer. I find mining in strips about 8 blocks wide is generally safe (presuming a stone ceiling), go 6 wide with a mixed sand/stone ceiling and 4 wide with sand ceiling only (when drilling for shale for example).

So Im a noob but.. I starting mining Iron and some allies on the server gave me an auger. What I do... Is I dig off the top rock you see to locate it, then I dig four spaces around that following the ore down. Then I continue to follow the ore down about 4 spaces make a ladder Temporary just like you stated. Then I chase the ore and continue down. It is causing a massive gaping large hole but... I built dirt up around my entrance and capped it with a Vault Hatch. After I had about 8 zombies coming falling into the hole with me. Since Ive done that and have been using the auger I stay in a large loop area but I dont branch out further than the loop goes and I continue to chase the ore going further and further down. This way I just have one large circle of area under the entrance and Im not compromising any structural integrity. I dont mine four directions with tunnels like you did because to me that seems completely unnecessary. Your not going to get as much ore using an AUger and limiting yourself to 3 wide tunnels in my opinion. The ore is there to be chased to get all of it from that location. When you start to get too deep or just cap the mine and go to another ore VS 3 wide tunnels that youll eventually start mining UP wards for anyways. Its easier to chase ore down than it is to chase up I noted the rock busters early on. BlackStrap Coffee prior to the Auger was what I used and it worked excellent. I carry 4 of them at all times not needed with the Auger but its fluid to drink and does increase stamina.

@tonysears38382 жыл бұрын
May I just say that there are techniques to mine where you do not need any supports and you can open up a mining area as much as you like (infinitely). I have had rooms that were easily 100 x 100 and down to bedrock and no cave ins.
@KlaverKatten2 жыл бұрын
how? :)
@LamontGranquist Жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you're deep enough the untouched stone above you seems to have infinite structural stability. You can mine out a massive cavern and it won't collapse unless you tunnel up to the surface. If you're on the surface over the massive cavern you can't place any blocks though, the new placed block will fail the structural stability check and will instantly be destroyed, but it won't trigger a collapse. I routinely build a small early game base and drop a few support pillars to bedrock under it and then never build supports in mines, just stay away from the surface and the dirt layer (not sure exactly how far you need to stay away, but stay away from dirt and mine down). Also I usually mine out under the surface deposits as well and don't start grid mining at bedrock until the surface deposit runs out or gets too sketchy with mining upwards.

Do you know if the Rock Busters candy bonus is multiplicative or additive with Mother Lode? Like, say if you'd get 100 iron normally, you'd get 200 with 5/5 Mother Lode (barring any other bonuses). Does Rock Busters make you get a total of 220 (additive) or 240 (multiplicative)? Any idea? I guess it could be tested pretty easily. I also wonder about the other temporary buffs like for the +50% melee damage from Skull Crushers. Is that additive or multiplicative with perks like Pummel Pete - Do you do a total of 200% damage, or 225% damage? That one I guess you could test out in creative(?) too. Edit: Just tested it out. Rock Busters seems to be additive with Mother Lode. I was getting 105 iron from an iron node without any perk points (I did give myself all the perk books from the mining series, but that doesn't boost yield unless you use coffee), 210 with 5/5 ML, and then 231 with Rock Busters. It should have been 252 if it was multiplicative. Edit2: Tested it with Coffee too and you get an extra 10 iron, so the 10% with coffee (with the corresponding perk book) is also additive. Also, to your point about the Auger being better than the Pickaxe despite the coffee bonus - in light of the bonus being additive, with 5/5 Mother Lode, the coffee bonus is less than 5% (if my math is right, around 4.76%).

Auger is better if you look at the amount mined per minute. Pick (+ Shovel for the Gravel) has two advantages: Doesn't use fuel and generates much less heat, resulting in fewer screamers. If you like looting more than punching rocks: A20 massively buffed the trash. A drone makes a using few extra inventory slots less critical, so just keep a slot for stone, lead, iron and wood. You can find so much that you barely have to mine + chop trees ever (unless your base is huge and/or massively depends on using lots of steel). Gunpowder will become an issue, though - you'll probably have to mine some coal and nitrate, these still can't be looted in significant quantities. Stone/sand are scarce, too, but you can scrap cement and cobble into stone.

So, I'm curious. Is there anything that could change the relationship between Steel Pick and Auger? Because in my game I use the pick when digging tunnels because it's much faster. I've timed it several times and I get about 25% further in the same time with pick compared to auger. I'm not saying your wrong, not at all. I'm just curious if some kind of perk, setting or anything could change the speed? I will also say that my Pick is Tier 6 while the auger is only tier 5. But could that really be that big of a difference?

I dont see much point in using a pickaxe when you have an auger since it drops your Thirst and hunger as well as stamina the time you might be getting faster in your opinion from the pick is easily subtracted from the time you need to then stop mining to eat and drink and if you dont have food and or water on you the time it takes to go get it. Maybe with a large tank mod and the Mods on his LEVEL 6 Auger its a ton faster than a steel pickaxe. It could be that maybe your steel pick has the mods on it and youre not taking that into account. But again Time,hunger,thirst and stamina lost using a pick easily highlight the loss of any speed gains from a pickaxe.
