Agreed. Typically, I like the way 2003 handles emotional elements, but Izumi's relationship with the brothers is... very odd in this episode (ep. 27). The way she immediately starts to beat them up while they don't even try to resist comes off less like instruction and more like abuse. Turning around and hugging them directly after doesn't make it feel any less awkward and unsettling. Izumi Curtis is incredibly tough and no-nonsense. What they did was wrong, and as their instructor, she needs to take action, regardless of the fact that she made the same mistake. Expelling them from her tutelage makes sense in such a scenario. Punching and kicking the snot out of them and then hugging them while Ed still has bruises all over his face does not.
@tiellimilin66222 жыл бұрын
And even she needed that hug
@meraki43983 жыл бұрын
this scene gets me every time, between Izumi hugging them, telling them they don't have to pretend to be strong, that they can be upset, and that that's okay (which is very important for people to hear imo) along with Ed and Al, asking for forgiveness, and apologizing profusely, finally letting themselves be vulnerable, especially Ed in this scene since he very much so feels guilty for everything that's happened to them, but he often tries to act strong and tough. Hell, ever since they did the human transmutation he blamed himself, in the english dub he screams "What have I done?!" instead of "we" when he realizes that Al is gone and what they brought back wasn't their mother. so seeing him be vulnerable with Izumi and ask her for forgiveness is just relieving to see for him while also just so sad to see these two feel so terrible for just wanting their mama back.

Every time I see Izumi interact with the Elrics I keep thinking of a line from a surly old hunter: "Family don't end with blood." Yeah, she couldn't have any kids herself. But she still managed to have two boys.
@freed60384 жыл бұрын
I remember that Ed once said he wont ever cry before he get Al's body back, because he can't cry as an armor. So I believe in this scene he still hold his tears😭 also he said 'sumimasen', which is as far as I know (with my crappy Japanese knowledge) is like the politest way to say I'm sorry.. I know that he usually polite in front of her, but I think it's because he really mourns for them😭😭😭
It's poetic how a woman who was looking forward to being a mother in turn was the next closest mother figure to two boys who lost their mother. She knew them well enough to see through them trying to cover up their mistakes so she wouldn't blame herself for not giving the exact details of why it was taboo to attempt to revive the dead, instead of being harsh she let them grieve. And what do they do? They end up asking her to forgive them, still feeling guilty for abusing her trust as a mentor to do something that ended up hurting them. The tragedy they share has given them a bond no one could be able to relate, the regret yet understanding how much more fragile life can be, and to be aware to not abuse their power as alchemists. Turning their pain into lessons they will carry for the rest of their lives.

I’ll be honest, this is what convinced me that Truth was objectively evil, perhaps moreso than Father. Izumi wasn’t trying to replace her child, she wasn’t trying to take someone else’s, hell she wasn’t even trying to turn back time to prevent her loss in the first place - y’know, something that was actually either malicious or damaging to fundamental structures of existence. She was a grieving mother trying to save her child from arguably the closest thing the natural world has to an evil aspect (if it’s voluntary that’s an entirely different matter, I’m referring here specifically to the entirely natural version as depicted here) and in exchange Truth tore out her capacity to have *any* children *ever again*. That inexcusable abomination delights in inflicting suffering on those desperate enough to beg it for help, and somehow the story treats it as the holder of the moral and ethical high ground. At least Father’s motivation was the pursuit of knowledge, only tainted by its inherent lack of capacity to impose personal limitations or appreciate the value of life due to *not being alive itself*. To all appearances Truth exists to sit with a metaphysical bucket of popcorn and giggle when the laws of physics result in a sapient being experiencing suffering, then apply a direct kick whenever they attempt to redress the imbalance that caused it.

I still prefer 2003. Unlike Brotherhood, there are actual consequences to human transmutation attempts in 2003. It’s an allusion Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein: we create our own monsters, and they come back to destroy us. Plus, the 2003 homonculi were created for a specific purpose. In there own strange and odd way, Wrath and Sloth did bond like mother and son.
