Weeeeellll, you're right. It did take a long time for the Alternate to drive him to insanity. Mark did also engage the Alternate with a pistol... after a while of rocking back and forth while holding his bible, crying, and calling for his mother and father. Only then, if I recall correctly, did Mark put 4 bullets in his door and, eventually, take his own life. In my opinion, it wasn't an act of bravery or determination. It was an act of fear and desperation.
