to the split-season format. On 6th December 1997, the 1st leg of the 1997 Suntory
Championship was played at the Yamaha Stadium in Iwata. Júbilo Iwata (blue & white) hosted reigning J.League
champions Kashima Antlers (red). A youthful Júbilo side were in confident mood, after winning their last nine games of the regular season.
