Have you ever heard a kick drum that’s so unique, so unpredictable, so… incredible, that you’ve wanted to fight someone? That might sound a little intense, but that’s exactly what happened when J Dilla was producing the song “Runnin’” by The Pharcyde in 1995.

J Dilla is the greatest producer of all time no question. the fact that 29 of the 31 tracks on Donuts was produced in the hospital with an SP-100 is just unbelievable to even imagine. That seals it for me.

I love Dilla but the original story isn’t even that he used a SP-100. It was a 303. Also, the newest biography of his life details that the album was actually made in Pro-Tools by Jeff Jank while working off of 10 beat CDs that Dilla made.

Great storytelling as always! Sidenote: was suprised to read in Dilla Time that T3 was the one who "discovered" the Stan Getz & Luiz Bonfa loop used in "Runnin". Definitely deserves some credit for that! 🙌

Fun fact: "Saudade vem correndo" means something like "the missing feeling (from someone) comes running". This translation is hard to do because saudade does not have an accurate translation. The fun fact, is that "correndo" means "Running". Source: I'm brazilian.

@andyboi8283 Must not listen to alot of Hip-Hop. The emcees spitting bars are subpar. Two things come with a good Hip-Hop song. The Beat & The Rapper. Pharcyde lacks good Dope Rhyme Sayers. Nothing too amazing. You should try listening to Nas, Mos Def, Big Pun, or André 3000 (Outkast)

I think its a little wack to hate on them cause you can't catch the vibe of the flow. I'm also from out east and vibe a lot harder with cold winter energy. I'll sum it up with a line form the legend BIG JUS, "Straight up, for niggas that don't understand. Obviously, this wasn't made for you, so fuck you, but jus company flow lune tns and i'm out."@@phonymex3340

@gabeeskridge8291 oh yeah the vibe itself and melodies are carried out by the producer. JD does a very good job of doing that. But still, the lyricism is not your typical East Coast wordplay

It's amazing what a simple and even standard idea it is to turn off quantization and play in drums by hand, the way music had ALWAYS been made, but JD is the first guy to buck the trend of an entire genre and do it on a major release. That's not to take away from his brilliance, but it just takes one guy to go, "I I think I'd rather do it this way" for everyone to see the possibilities. You're doing a great job on this channel. I'm duly impressed.

When I was a kid my cousin died and left us his equipment, we had a Korg keyboard workstation but the loop didn’t work it was a malfunction. We had to play the drums and every sound for like 3 minutes, we had to count bars in our heads for the chorus 😂😂😂😂

What y’all don’t understand and Refuse to understand is that it was played by feeling not by technicality. It’s like dancing y’all could learn the basic steps but to switch up is to feel the rhythm and improvise. I can break down everyone’s style beat nuts , large pro , premier , tip learning the equipment is one thing but you must also have an imagination.
