"Give it To Me" surprisingly did not chart in the Top 10 in 1973, reaching it's highest at #30 on the Billboard charts when it was released on The J. Geils Band's Atlantic Records album Bloodshot. Perhaps a more likely reason the song didn't chart higher was because of it's length being 6 and 1/2 minutes and less because of the somewhat "suggestive lyrics." Most hit songs at the time were not usually over 6 minutes, but keep in mind, this was back when most pop songs had relatively clean lyrics. Most lines in pop songs then were not so blatant. True, Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" came out the same year and did chart higher, but by 1973 Gaye had been an established star in music since the mid 60's. Even for Marvin's standards, those were his most "direct" lyrics that he had sung up to that point as well. The J. Geils Band, around this time, were just starting to make noise in the major music scene. Both songs are great, but it took The J. Geils Band years later in the early 80's (thanks to heavy rotation on MTV) to gain serious recognition on the national level.
This song has always been one of the band's most beloved tunes. The live versions of this song have even more energy. I'd say it's the best song in their set. The funk style breakdown starting around 2:55 that drives through the rest of the song is simply one of the best breakdowns in Rock and Roll history. Each group member has their moment to stand out. The organ part, played by underrated keyboardist Seth Justman ,certainly has a 1960's psychedelic sound. Then, Magic Dick solos on the Lickin' Stick. J. Geils comes in after with a sweet guitar solo. All while bassist Danny Klein holds down that unique bass line until the song fades. It's such a memorable groove. The way the song is structured is unique, having the 3 different parts: the Reggae style in the beginning, the organ solo after the bridge and the funk style outro. Three completely different sections, but they all work together as one great whole!
"Give it To Me" is my one of my favorite songs ever. I love the Reggae influence in the first part of the song. Few rock bands used Reggae influences in their songs at that time. The genre was just beginning to gain substantial appeal in the U.S., due in large part to artists like Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley. This song further proves how ahead of their time the Geils crew really was for a Rock band. So sit back, relax and enjoy this gem by my hometown guys: Boston's very own, J. Geils Band!
Lyrics:
Now don't touch the knobs 'cause I think
We're going to have some fun with this one here
Oh yeah!
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
You're so slick hun, know every trick now
You know I want it, I want it so bad
You know I need it, I can't believe it
So come on baby, Please relieve it
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me (Mmm, hmm)
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
Now you've been bugging me, Every night now
You say you want it, You want it right now
I can't get to it, I can't get through it
So come on baby, Please
You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
Why keep me cold
When it's so warm inside
Come on baby
Your love is too good to hide"

First heard this when my big brother brought the album home. I was so mesmerized by the red vinyl disc. Even at the tender age of 8 back then. This song just jumped out at me. No one else I can think of from back them was rocking a ska groove like this. The jam stomps and may favorite part is that after saying what need to be said, everyone in the band gets a chance to strut for a bit.

This is great news, but what would be even better news is if they finally get elected INTO the RRHOF in 2017! So that means all of us fans have to vote for them on the RRHOF website as much as we can because we cannot let this golden opportunity slip away from us again! So please! - Get out the vote for J. Geils Band so we can see Peter Wolf give the absolute BEST and craziest acceptance speech in RRHOF history like only the Woofa Goofa Mama Toofa can do! Here's the website where you can vote for them: www.rockhall.com/vote . And just to let you all know - you can vote more than one time as the ruling says that you can cast 1 ballot per day through December 5th, 2016...so vote away and we can make sure the Original Bad Boys from Boston finally get the recognition they deserve!

You know I'd have to agree with you there man! I've seen quite a few live groups in my day, not to say I've been around for a long long time however, but these guys just have a certain energy/charisma about them that I gravitate towards the most. The fact that they have so many great songs (both originals and perfectly picked covers) sure doesn't hurt either! Have a great year in 2015 William!

Put this on at a house party and we were dancin', laughin'; partying, getting laid. Defiitely the way to do it, nowadays i'm sure they have their own stuff, but give me J. The lyrics are incorrect. I attended the Blow Your Face Out concert (where they recorded for that live album) in the old Bawst'n Gahdn'z in 1976. I was 16 and my father waited across the street at the Penalty Box bar. It was my first concert, general admission and the last general admission concert there. Procol Harum opened without Robin Trower. Awesome concert. I remember seeing a guy almost fall over the railing in the balcony when at the last second someone grabbed him by the back of his pants and heaved him back. I remember that a good sized fire was lit in the middle of the floor. It was crazy. Real crazy. J. Geils performed for 3 1/2 hours. The PA speakers were two huge columns that seemed to be 70 feet tall or more. I've never seen anything like that even after that. Great music. The kids today don't know what they have missed. They missed the best R&R that this country will ever see. Real music. There was so much talent back in those days and so much originality from every style of music. And the lyrics were so cool, so much fun to hear. Todays music is just plain dog shit.

They combined blues, soul, funk and then reggae. This was and still is my favorite album. BTW- I saw them many many times all over the country and more. Meet them many times. So underrated as a band. Incredible musicians. Just saw them again. This is a great description and slide show..thx 4 posting.

I was their 16 year old bellboy when they stayed at the Berkeley-Carteret Hotel in Asbury Park NJ after they played at the AP Convention Hall (1972). In that awkward silence on the elevator up to their room post-concert I asked them "where do you go next?"-- they laughed and Peter Wolf said "outta the business". I saw Peter a few years later at the Beverly Hills Polo Lounge on Super Bowl Weekend in '76.

The last time I saw these guys was in 1982 in Germany with the Stones. What a great show! I wish it was on video. Two bands that in many ways are so alike!!! I never would have made that connection without seeing it. I use to play quite a few J Geils tunes in many cover bands. I played keys and harp. My favorite organ solo was "Give It To Me" my heart would race as the solo kick in! Love that bad boy! I gave up harp because the cold winters and the harp playing were brutal on my lips. I never could play any where near as good as Magic Dick. He is the greatest!
