On November 22, 1906, the Lake Steamer J.H.Jones went down in Georgian Bay off Cape Croker with all hands and passengers. It was the last sailing of the season with a quick trip north to Tobermorry.

How can anyone vote a song like this down? Great (& sad) story, strong music, and such a wonderful voice.

...One of his best.... I think some people don't like the story of the J.H.Jones put to a song that was written for another event... (seems to be the main complaint)

There have been 10,000 ships sunk in the Great Lakes. One hundred and sixty in Lake Huron in one storm. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a White Squall, hasn't spent much time on or near the Great Lakes.

I believe it. I have seen a blue norther on land that was just as explosive.

@drbob....yes, I think you're right. Perhaps it's possible that the sinking of the JH Jones was inspiration for this song. But the song is absolutely about the " old-timer"on the deck watching the loss of the "youngster". It's a tragic and beautiful song. I love the way he describes the ship (like a great dog, she shook herself)....and the storm (so fast it seems enchanted).

@devin2482 I understand your opinion, though disagree strongly. But if this music is not something you enjoy then I must ask, why do you have to comment? A decent debate is more acceptable, but a plain insult makes no sense, and makes you look like an ass. (no offence intended). But that aside, in my opinion this is great. One of Stan's best.

Cheyenne, could you tell me more about the Sightlines 10 textbook, because I'd like to try to find a copy? Publisher or authors or at least copyright date.If you didn't already know, there are scenic caves on the Eastern Shore of the Bruce Penninsula, not far from Wiarton, that are a little off the beaten track, but worth going to see if you're in that general area.

@Moonchalice I'd assumed that someone just figured the song would go well with the images of the disaster, even though they don't describe the same event.

@drbob3 A White Squall, an anomoly, no one has actually ever seen one. Even the knockdown that the Albatross(movie White Squall), suffered in the Gulf of Mexico was most probably not a White Squall per say. Her sinking was probably incorrectly potrayed in the film. She was gone in under a minute. Suggesting she opened up down the middle due to the removal of structural bulkheads to accomodate more living space in a previous refit by Capt. Sheldon.
