This is my first hearing of no 57 and I'm delighted ☺ I don't get tired of saying "this symphony is amazing " after every haydn symphony..so much beauty and wonderful sounds and what diversity among all 104.. I'm about halfway through them all..my only exposure previously was Bernstein and the like with the large orchestra.. can you believe that at one time in my younger days I considered haydn boring!.. I know so much better today after studying his music more intently and learning about his bio the impact crater he left on earth is immense and after hearing these compositions preformed more like the original audience would have heard is a wonderful way to enter a time long ago and yet even today his symphonic legacy is unrivaled.. I don't comment much but had to let the cat out of the bag on this one😂

Le sinfonie scritte nel 1774 differiscono sensibilmente l'una dall'altra, trovandosi alla convergenza delle ultime ondate dello "Sturm un Drang" con il flusso ordinato di pensieri e di sentimenti nei quali si adagia ormai l'artista. La sinfonia n.57 molto diversa dalla precedente n.56 presenta qualche punto di contatto con la n.54 e soprattutto con il "Maestro di scuola" n.55, ma è permeata da uno spirito nuovo, quella serenità, quell'equilibrio incrollabile che guideranno d'ora in poi la mano di Haydn fino alle realizzazione dell'età avanzata. E' una musica incomparabilmente viva, a cui la maestria acquisita durante le lunghe fasi sperimentali, conferisce lo splendore formale. LDC

This is one of my favorite Haydn symphonies. I remember a fine performance by Laszlo Somogyi on an Epic LP, and a stylishly elegant one by Max Rudolf on a Decca LP; Hogwood doesn't seem to measure up to those. I'm all for contrasts, but Hogwood's slow sections drag and his fast sections all but disappear. Otherwise his heavy accents make the music sound choppy. I haven't heard Dorati's or Adam Fischer's recordings yet, but all their Haydn performances I have heard are among the best. Admittedly, in general I prefer my Haydn with "heft", rather than "Haydn lite", as here, with a smaller ensemble.
