J-Hope has said in interviews that his album, Jack in the Box, was his "aspirations to break the mold and grow further", and his desire to showcase a "different side of me...an extremely dark, raw side" instead of his happy sunshine self that he usually shows. Jack in the Box is J-Hope breaking out of the Box. He was nervous about this album, worried that his fans would not like or not understand this side of him. His designed his album to tell his story starting with an intro that tells the story of Pandora, followed by J-Hope's first track "Pandora's Box" and seven more tracks in a variety of styles and emotions. J-Hope directed (is that the correct title?) all the elements--what he wore, the storyboards for the MVs, the album design (art work by Kaws), talking with the director of the MV about the shots. He wanted to work with producers who could help give the song the feeling that he wanted. Arson was produced by Clams Casino, who also produced STOP (4th track on the album).

It's so interesting how different art is interpreted. I never got the message from this that he 'doesn't care', rather he cared so much and was so passionate he's scared he burned himself out and now wonders if he wants to reignite the fire after he burned so much. Edit: it dawns on me that you meant him not caring in context of the structure of his song not specifically designed to be more marketable but rather unique

70 year old BTS Army here. I suggest you watch the behind the scenes video on the making of this MV. It's great. Also, please react to his historic and record breaking performance at the famous Lollapalooza Music Festival last August. He performed shortly after he released his first official solo album, "Jack In the Box". He asked that fans listen to his album in order because it all tells a story. So I think you should react to ALL the album tracks in order. Then react to the Lolla performance. I think you "get" J-Hope really well and I thank you for this in depth reaction. The great thing about BTS is that none of them want to disassociate from the group. They want to be able to do both solo and group activities because they love each other too much to part ways. I thought when J-Hope was the first to release a solo album his was the top album of the year but then RM released his Indigo and I decided this was my favourite. The fun thing about BTS is that their only competition is themselves 🤣 They will be vastly different in their solo projects while they are going through their military service one by one but when they reconnect their music will evolve again. Can not wait! So far, J-Hope and RM released albums, Jin, a gorgeous single with Coldplay, The Astronaut (you should totally check it out), Jimin's album is coming next month. Jungkook did Dreamers, a World Cup official song and Jimin did Vibe, a collab. Still not albums yet frombother memberd so we are waiting for more. 💜💜💜

More than not caring, I think that the message of Arson is to explain just how hard, scary, and exhausting BTS's rise to fame is and how much pressure has gone into maintaining that position. It's agonizing, and yet, it's exhilarating. Hoseok mentions in this that he doesn't know if he wants to go back to things, basically, but that it's up to him and him alone if he's going to choose to keep burning or let the flames be extinguished. But it's a kind of double-edged sword, right? You are bright and brilliant, burning, but you're also in agonizing pain. You can't have one without the other.

Since you like More and Arson so much, you should definitely check out JHope’s concert at Lolapalooza, showcasing his album, Jack in the Box. The first half is essential solo JHope. The 2nd half has elements of his BTS persona, as he is the group’s dance leader. To Note: JHope would always want to be known as JHope of BTS, as he is very proud of their body of work. JITB is his attempt to show his own voice when not on BTS stage, and is an extension of his creative space.

BTS members surprise us quite a lot. When we think we know what they will sound like next comeback, turns out they often don't. Same here with j-hope. His earlier mixtape sounded different, and everyone thought he'd play out his dancer card (he's the dance leader, an excellent dancer) but he decided that none of that should attract people but it should be his producing artistry inculding lyricsm only. I have so much respekt for him and his decisions.

Ahhhhh I’m so glad someone picked up the nu-metal influence! More and Arson (and Pandora’s Box on his album) takes me back to a time of drop D down tuning, super heavy distortion pedals, slap bass, and Hot Topic wardrobes lol. I saw a lot of people saying they heard Nirvana, which was confusing to me, but maybe grunge is their only frame of reference when it comes to rock music with distorted guitars? Since nu-metal sits in the pocket of hip-hop meets metal, I was hearing Korn, Linkin Park, Ill Niño, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, but J-hope made it modern and I LOVED it. I’m so glad you’re appreciating BTS’ artistry as a group and as individuals. They are truly a group like no other. Happy listening 😊

You should check out Hobipalooza (j-hope headlined Lollapalooza with a 70 minute set). He's a phenomenal rapper and writer (and singer) but performing is where he's a titan in the industry. And MORE and Arson live...it was like a rap and rock concert. He was just an incredible force and no one is doing what he's doing. And his range is so massive. Like Arson and MORE are one thing but Daydream and Ego are another and Blue Side and Airplane are another and Hangsang and Baseline are another...he can really do it all. And you really seem to appreciate it and I'd love to see you dig into his stuff more! He has such a specific and well-defined brand but he still manages to surprise and challenge fans and it makes him such an exciting artist to follow.

*Jack in the Box,* the album where "More" and "Arson" come from, is amazing. The concept, the lyrics, the message, the music, the story line. It's a very cohesive album that you should listen to in order. J-hope is an incredible storyteller. I don't know if you have the time to react to the whole album (10 tracks, 22 minutes), but if you like j-hope, you should definitely listen to the album, on or off camera. And his performance at Lollapalooza! He's a born performer. "More" was his opening number, so maybe you can react to it to get a taste of this electrifying solo concert. I would also LOVE to hear your thoughts on *Wild Flower by RM* that explore similar themes of fame and success, but in a very different way. His album "Indigo" also digs deep into his thoughts, about being an artist and being human. For yet another side to BTS solo work, *The Astronaut by Jin* is a love letter to ARMY that he released before he enlisted to the military for 18 months. These seven members of BTS work so well together and they're all equally talented, and yet so different from one another. BTS is known (and loved) for their honest and sincere lyrics, based on their own thoughts and feelings and experiences. This is why they talk about teens and dreams, about the suffocating school system, about young love, in their first albums (2013-2014), when most of them were teens themselves. This is why they talk about their relationship with fame and success and the toll it takes on them in their latest albums, including in their solo endeavors. You've already reacted to their song "Yet to Come". If you listen to it again and read the lyrics, you'll find this theme again, but from a different angle. Their lyrics are very personal, and yet there's a universality to them that listeners can relate to them. The rap line in particular write most of their own verses, and that's why their names are credited in most BTS songs, and of course in their solo songs. That's why RM has 210 songwriting credits, while Suga and j-hope have 100+ songwriting credits (I don't remember the exact numbers). All three are deeply contemplative and introspective.

Not Today has great lyrics and this dirty, gritty synth and bass. Fire has an explosive energy and showcases their stage presence! To hear some of Hope’s other works, I’d say Boy Meets Evil, On the Street ft. J. Cole, Daydream, and Blue Side! They show his range and genre blending. And I agree 100% that their videos are AMAZING!

Some of my favorite songs by BTS are "Dis-ease" and "Rain," but really they have so many great songs. Their lyrics are definitely a draw for many ARMY, but if someone doesn't want to deep dive into the lyrics and just listen casually, their sound is so diverse that there will be a song that everyone can find for their playlist. I can listen to their music all day, group and solo, and not have any particular sound be over saturated. J-HOPE has released some really good music, please someday check out his stage for Lollapalooza. Each member of BTS is so talented in their own way, they are currently all focusing on solo work and promotions, and they will rake in even more success and fans as they begin to showcase even more than they have been giving us before.

08:14 That what differs BTS, their pop songs have the amount of lyrics. They have analogies that will amaze you. Like 134340 - Pluto song, where they compare people to planets and how Pluto was excluded from plantes as analogy of broke relationship. Or Paradise or any their more social driven songs like Silver spoon. BTS developed from hip hop oriented members and three rappers are main contributers to the lyrics and production of overall band sound, so you will get substantial lyrics even in seemingly love songs, cause their love song never cliche or cheesy

jack in the box, which is the album this song & more are from, was the first *official* solo album from a bts member, as a member of bts. their other independent projects were considered separate releases prior to this one this song from j-hope, specifically, is about his relationship with his fame and success, and the question of what to do with it going forward and how that affects him personally (the feeling of burning alive & setting everything else on fire is very apt imo, as someone who's followed their journey since the beginning). that's my interpretation, anyway. he has a documentary about making the album & performing it at lollapalooza coming out this month where we'll surely glean more. the album is overall amazing, and underrated even within the fandom. i highly suggest listening to it sometime, on or off camera. it's tied with the other member suga's first solo release for my favorite thing to come out of them, personally (long comment incoming) i'm sure you've had other comments of this nature, but i don't figure one with a rundown of bts's genre history n i feel like that may be helpful in choosing recommendations. while this was a tone shift for j-hope (he had a brighter, more colorful image leading up to this), it wasn't a genre shift. j-hope, suga, and rm are the rappers of bts, and its first members. 2 out of the 3 were underground rappers prior to bts, and the 3rd (j-hope) was a street dancer & very connected to hip hop through that. bts was originally a heavily hip hop oriented group until 2015, when they decided to expand their artistic catalog & try new genres (partially as a last-ditch effort to continue as a group, bc of financial struggles). their 2015-2016 work is more of an amalgamation of alternative pop & hip-hop with notes of all kinds of other genres than typical pop. 2017-2019 gave us their typical pop, and their skyrocket to global dominion. 2020 to now they've released a few bubblegum pop singles, a pop album (map of the soul: 7), an impromptu alternative pop album about the pandemic (be), and an anthology album with 3 new singles called proof, run bts is from that one. rm released his first *official* solo album called indigo in december, i think you'd appreciate it when you're ready to explore the others!! he's a very soulful, contemplative artist and thinker. i also think you'd find suga's first release, agust d, interesting, especially from a musical angle. suga is a very skilled & prolific producer and talented musical mind. as for bts the group, i think you'd be intrigued by "rain" from their 2014 album dark&wild. it's a jazz-influenced piece & one of my all-time favs. "ma city" is another very good one (from a diff album), but i think you'd really like dark&wild as a whole bc it has the most rock influence from anything they've done as a group. anyw, long comment over lol i figured i'd pool some info & recommendations for you. i hope you don't feel overwhelmed, just absorb what you want & what interests you!! i only intend to be insightful. the same for any other comments you get. first and foremost, you should just enjoy yourself & what bts has to offer.

@@BlakeMakesMusic J-Hope's album may be underappreciated within the fandom (after all, many BTS fans are more pop listeners), but it had excellent reviews in all the major world music media, the Grammys named J-Hope artist of the month along with Beyonce, and Rolling Stone magazine ranked him into the top ten albums of 2022. J-Hope wanted to make this album, even though he was aware that it would not be as commercially successful as his first mixtape. He didn't even release it in physical form to support the environment. The album is really great, as is his Lollapalooza performance with a live band. Especially the first part of the performance has a great rock feel. When it comes to lyrics, all three BTS rappers are poets in their own way, RM has great intelligent puns, Suga aka Agust D writes deep inner confessions and you already know J-Hope. It is BTS's rap line, their creation and influence that makes BTS different from other kpop and makes them exceptional.

@@amberpearce710 I thought his album was underrated in the fandom. Or maybe misunderstood, it's just underground. I've read a lot of opinions from Army saying they don't like the album, despite it being a masterpiece. Of course, they have the right, it's their taste. I'm glad that J-Hope is now more respected, but I keep reading opinions that praise RM and Suga for their songwriting and completely ignore J-Hope. J-Hope is still last in popularity in the fandom, despite receiving recognition outside the fandom, especially in the West. In the Korean Awards, he was often not even nominated, or won only non-artistic categories. PSY won the best album award. So catchy mainstream songs. Jimin's fandom frequently attacks J-Hope, most recently they were upset that Hobi attended a Dior show. So yes, J-Hope is (mostly on his own merit) a megastar in k-pop, but he's still underrated compared to the other members of BTS.

His mixtape, Hope World and album, Jack in the Box have different qualities to them but they’re both completely my vibe. As it’s my day off today I’m gonna subscribe and binge some of your other reactions. ✌️💜

With much of BTS’s music (group and solo) it doesn’t pay to get too hung up on structure, as while much of it definitely conforms to typical pop structure many songs also throw that out the window. Lyrics are always important in their songs. Even songs which taken alone seem possibly simple are frequently part of a bigger theme across an album or even an album series.

For the upcoming, I recommend "Wildflower" by RM, or the Tiny Desk Concert of RM. His new album "Indigo" is truly recording academy worthy. There'll also be a Disney+ documentary on February 17th about j-hope. It follows him from album production, to a listening party with BTS members, all the way to Lollapalooza where he was a headliner with a 1.5 hour set. Maybe cool to watch on your own, and film a review/reflection after.

All of their songs have their soul in them. BTS's lyrics are important, because they are almost ever deep, meaningful; the messages in their songs are our free therapy against life issues. J-Hope put out his feelings, his "dark" side. You need to watch his solo performance at Lollapalooza (Hobipalooza), to me, it was his fenix rebirth, because the way he feels self confident now is another level!!! BTS's songs are not written to be popular, but to be heard and processed... that's what we say they are not Kpop, not even pop.

The two songs are very different because of part of the story they are telling. In More Jhope is talking about he isn't done learning and perfecting his craft. But Arson is saying that he ran so hard and burned the world down but is this the end. He's contemplating whether he's done or if he should continue to keep the fires burning.

the problem of all music industry is that most of the time the person who wrote lyrics is not creating a melody and/or is not producing that song and/or is not producing an mv for that song and/or not creating a choreo. in the bts case, they always participate (not only listenning a middle or final result and saying yes or no, but really creating) on a song and mv creation, that is why they are soooo good in the transending the lyrics to the song and to the dance and to the mv.

So bts releases a LOT of behind the scenes content of themselves making the music. You can find them on bangtantv, their official KZbin channel. There are playlists for each album and single release. In the jack in the box album playlist there are several jhope interviews. Arson is about a crossroads for jhope. They spend the past 10 years working nonstop, essentially "burning" the world, making hits, churning out new songs. So in jack in the box jhope is asking himself, should he put out the fire that he and his group set and take a break or should he just keep burning until there is nothing left to burn. BTS have said before during 2020 that they were going through severe burnout as a group. Sometimes you need to take a break from work so that you don't exhaust yourself. A similar sentiment is actually found in RMs album Indigo. Live your life before creating art. (I wanna be a human before I do some art - YUN indigo) But the problem that several bts members have is their work addiction (BTS has a song called Dis-ease which jhope was the primary composer for. Its about this work addiction. It has the jhope old school hiphop sound). And that is why this is even a question in jhopes song. A part of him wants to keep burning himself up.

I suggest even if you can’t watch it on your channel to watch Jhope Lalapalooza concert last year. He had a live band. More and Arson are 100% better than the music video. The music video is great but the Lalapalooza version are so much better. All BTS music even their solo stuff is better live. I am 61 and I have gone to a lot of concerts and seen a lot of the Top artists. I can say Jhope’s concert at Lalapalooza is the best concert I have ever seen. They do have a lot of behind the scenes for making of their music videos, behind their scenes of their concerts and even have videos on their process. Jhope actually was hands on of every aspect of the Jack in the Box album, music videos and the concert. RM had his hands in every aspect of his album Indigo. I am sure Suga will be the same with his album and tour coming up in the next month or so. All 7 of the guys write lyrics but RM, Suga & Jhope write the majority a long with some on their in house team. I agree with other ARMYs make sure you read the lyrics because there is deep meaning in almost every song. You can even read it before you watch the MV or listen to the song so it doesn’t distract you when listening to the music or watching the video. These young men are absolutely amazing and everyone of them bring something special to the table. BTS is 7 superstars in one supergroup. They started off as a hip hop group and have opened their arms and embraced every genre and mix them seamlessly. I look forward to seeing more BTS reactions and breakdowns from you. ☺️

Happy you liked it, great reaction. However, JHope doesn't want to disassociate from bts. He mentions them in his songs a lot too. They feel part of the team and receive a lot of support from it. Jimin followed Jhope for his first solo live, which was lollapalooza, so a music festival in the US, to show support and it made such a big difference for JHope apparently. JHope's music is great, and his lyrics are very good. Worth checking out this entire album (Jack in the box), but also his previous Mixtape Hope World. But his solo songs as part of bts (on official bts albums), are also worth a look, one of his best work. Oooor bts songs where Jhope is the primary songwriter such as Dyonisus and Di-sease. This is all for your JHope dive, but one thing to remember. Always read lyrics for bts songs. All of them

ONE OF THE MOST THOUGHTFUL "REACTION" THANK YOU SO MUCH! Your comment about pop music is shared by many. Including myself. I ignored BTS for years even after their name hit the mainstream, because I have boxed them into the category of "pop", worst still for me at the time, "kpop". I love informed reactions which I would consider more of a commentary because not only do I get to appreciate something I love with others, but also because I always LEARN SOMETHING NEW. So thank you again! (The fact that it is HARD TO BOX THEIR MUSIC INTO A PARTICULAR CATEGORY is why I LOVE THEM SO MUCH). ---- PS: Not all English translations are created equal. At least from what I can see from "MORE" where they simply translate "fish in the flow of water" or "fish in water" into "my element" thereby DESTROYING all the imageries in his lyrics and rap, as just one example. It can be really hard work to get as close as we can to the real sense of the Korean but going through not only several translations but also some explanation on cultural and social contexts of Korean words. ---- PPS: BTS' foundation has always been rooted in what you can see from the rap line's solo projects so far. So for many people a lot of what we see in their solo projects are "new" and almost as if a move from pop, when THIS is them ALL ALONG. It is just that BTS was introduced to the world through their English pop song after the pandemic.

If you want to listen to more of his music, then he has a new album, where these songs come from - "Jack in the Box". But there is also other music that he has released before. In general, he is very versatile musically. Such heavy beats appear only on the last album. But I would say all his music is united by an Old School sound. So this things you can check out besides new album: In 2019, he released a single - "chicken noodle soup". It's a remake of the song he started dancing to. In 2018, his mixtape "Hope world" was released. This is more light, but only in sound, the lyrics there are very deep. So in addition to the new album, you can see these works. I would also say that his performances are an integral part of him as an artist. He's just one of the best performer I've ever seen. And I was a fan of rock indie bands. He's incredible live. So yes, Lollapalooza is a must-watch

Hobi is brave, and he's willing to experiment. I agree with you that he doesn't care about pleasing the gatekeepers, but he does care deeply about being true to his creative core. Also, thank you for appreciating Hobi's intelligent lyrics. He's a poet, but his writing prowess is sometimes overlooked. "Is that practical effects?" Yes and no. They did actually light someone up. From my knowledge , they had two people on fire but one didn't look as visually striking (I'm getting this info from the making of video for Arson and more going off of what we saw in it - nothing was said about it), so it seems like they replicated the image of the first man running for that. But yes, people were actually on fire.
