You know JJ I really struggle with being Canadian. I'm an American by birth with a Canadian father. But having lived in Canada the majority of my life I've always been really bothered by the Anti American attitudes of Canadians. I felt this needs to defend being American and in fact that's why I identify with being an American despite being born in Canada and having lived in Canada the majority of my life. But then I see your videos were America doesn't matter. And that's kind of awesome because Canadians Pride themselves on not being American. You know similarly it doesn't matter that you're gay or a conservative. In this day and age it's very hard to be a conservative I'm one myself. That's really sweet that it doesn't here. If anything finding out the fact that you're conservative kind of blew me away.

I totally relate. I was born in the States and came up here as a teen with my mom who married a Canadian. I was never defensive about my American roots and felt no need to defend it, especially as, since I was just a non-political and somewhat clueless kid when I came up here, I didn't have any specific or strong opinions or feelings on the subject. I thus grew up hearing Canadians complain about America and Americans. When traveling, I found that the Canada did not hold a monopoly on subtle anti-Americanism, not by far. I spent several years living in various Asian countries, and generally preferred to travel under my Canadian passport and identify as a Canadian. However, there were a few events in my own personal experience that got me to see a more balanced view. Yes, it is actually true that much of the anti-Americanism in Canada and many other countries has very valid basis in reality (the love affair with guns, the very divisive racial and political culture, the level of violence, the overall arrogance and world ignorance, etc, etc), and yet on the other hand I have grown more respect for America and some parts of its culture and history, and I am just as apt to tell those stories as I am to complain about other parts of American politics and culture that greatly annoy me. Mind you, I do the same thing for other countries with which I have some in depth and personal exposure, such as the Asian countries where I have lived for many years. In short, I do not feel torn, and do not feel a need to "defend the honor" of America and Americans, as it were, but see it and speak of it in balanced view. For many years I thought we came to Canada because my mom married a Canadian. It turned out that I had it backwards. Two decades later I realized that actually mom married a Canadian so we could move to Canada. There is indeed a lot of complaining about certain aspects of American politics and culture not only outside of the Excited States but also within it. A few of my running jokes: when mentioning my dual citizenship to Canadians, sometimes I used to say "I was born in the states but I have since repented of my sins," or more recently, I like to say, "The Canadian side of me has to apologize for the American side of me," (and thus poking fun at the Canadian predilection to feel a need to apologize for everything), or "The second Canadian national sport is hockey, and the first is looking down on Americans." In short, a balanced view is good. I see too many people on far left or right of that spectrum, with more arrogance and ignorance and self-righteousness displayed with the more extreme views either way. This is also one of the many reasons I like JJ's approach and way of thinking.

@sumdumbmick2 жыл бұрын
personally I always found it weird that people ask questions like, 'when did you realize you were gay' or 'how did you realize you were gay'. and not just because I'm straight. the question is framed around a really big assumption that I don't think actually makes sense. I have memories of being extremely attracted to women while I was still in diapers and couldn't speak well enough for anyone to understand a word I said. and then about ten years later everyone around me is suddenly talking about 'he'll discover girls one day' and my friends at school started talking about who they liked, and I'm just over there like, 'but... I got sent to the principal in first grade for looking up girls' skirts on the playground'... what d'you mean 'discover girls one day'? but really, I doubt that anyone has such a moment where they're just suddenly hit up the side of the head with the recognition that they're attracted to whoever they're attracted to. attraction is automatic and profoundly physiological. your heart rate and breathing changes, your pupils dilate... all kinds of things happen outside of your control when you're attracted to someone. so it's not a matter of 'realizing' or 'discovering' anything. it just is. like breathing water causes you to choke and gasp, or touching a hot stove top causes your arm to whip back in recoil. with practice you can learn to mask these responses in public, but that doesn't really change anything. so the whole premise that the original question is based upon seems to me to be complete nonsense. it's a question that doesn't even make sense in the first place, because it's malformed. as you said, it does make sense to realize that the word 'gay' describes the attraction you have, but that's an entirely different thing from what the question is asking. virtually nobody has an answer to what the question is actually asking.

Neat video! You answered a lot of questions and I like the way you divided them up. Also agree with you on the political compass. Also, you've visited Texas, as it seems many nonUS folks have. If you ever get the chance, visit the state to the north, Oklahoma. That's my home state and it has a lot of different things to visit, both historical as well as festivals, events, art, theatre, etc. The Visit Oklahoma website lists a lot of it and my hometown Visit Enid has stuff about its local places, too. I have friends from Seattle who live here now who have visited British Columbia and Vancouver who have said it was beautiful. Someday I hope to visit there as the NW and New England parts of the US are the only places I haven't visited and I've been to Mexico, but not Canada and so would like to visit Canada. Helps that I've met plenty of Canadians visiting here, usually from Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan (which I enjoy saying as it's as fun as saying as some of the cities and towns in Oklahoma....though the folks say the province looks a lot like Kansas and western Oklahoma and the Oklahoma panhandle in land features) who come for trade shows, hunting events, craft fairs, and rodeos usually. Honestly if they didn't have a license plate I'd not know they weren't from the US, though they always ask where I'm from and then say I don't sound like a local (which even locals tell me that, but I think it's because I have family from all over the US and even from England as well as the city has folks from all over due to the military hereso I grew up hearing lots of different pronunciations and accents that I probably just unconsciously picked various ways to say things....though on the plus side if English isn't their first language I grew up around folks whose English wasn't great and so I learned how to interpret meaning beyond just words but within context....though wish I had that skill in French and Spanish, I read those better than I can speak them). Anyways, enjoyed the video. It was great learning more about you. Might be interesting to read your political writings as I enjoy keeping up with the politics of other places not just in my home city, county, State, or nation. But I'm quirky like that. Keep up the great work! I always enjoy your videos!

2:40 actually the sapply compass test is more accurate, it doesn’t make it so that saying “I think hitler wasn’t literally the best person to ever exist” automatically putting you in hard libleft thing that the original does and it’s usually criticized pretty heavily in the political compass “community”
@brumm0m3ntum943 жыл бұрын
also the sapply test is more about “how necessary do you believe government is in preserving freedom” or “how much do you value our collective freedom compared to individual freedom” than “how much do you value freedom”

Insert comment about JJ being gay, a vegetarian or how he pronounces vegan. 4:13 There was a dictator called Ceaucescu and one called Antonescu.

From my American perspective it just seems really odd the JJ is gay but also conservative because in the US conservatives are kinda known for being extremely homophobic, especially in Florida. Also I am not trying to be mean by saying this

Maybe a secondary channel where you share your politcal views? Explain Canadian Politics to outsiders? Or even just political concepts from your degree? I dunno why I used "?"s everywhere, but whatever

Thanks for being honest, JJ. I came out in much the same way and I agree that such an event should not be politicized, be applied generally, or used to cloud up some other event. Also grew up loving much of the same 90s early 2000s culture. Today's? not so much....

Myself, as a guy who happens to be one of those guys that like girls, espcially one in particular, I would love to hang out with JJ, as I think he is awesome and fun and very insightful. Cheers, mate!

It’s unfortunate that you are so insecure in your sexuality that you need to explicitly state you are interested in girls, one in particular, as to not give off the wrong impression to J.J. who you will likely never spend time with, and who seemingly has not seen, or instead has refused to acknowledge your comment. On a lighter note, how did things with the particular lady go? Hopefully we’ll.

@@thedude9164 ha ha you are funny in your ignorance and lack of social skills. It was a joke, guy. Also, in fact, my son has met JJ a few times at local coffee shops. At home, my wife and I have a couple of running jokes. We refer to my main buddy as my boyfriend, and any really good looking male celebrity that she admires, such as George Clooney, we also make a joke that he is good looking enough to make me wanna be gay. Ya gotta relax, dude.

It seems like a lot of great cartoons come from Canada. One of my all time favorites is called "Jacob Two-Two". Unfortunately I didn't see it when it was out but I discovered the re-runs on American television around 2010 and I wasn't even ashamed to watch it as an adult, as I was 32 years old back then. Hell, I'd still watch today if they made any new episodes. LoL! 😄

I don't eat as much candy as I used to, but I still enjoy a good bar of chocolate, sometimes for dessert (when I first started living on my own, I couldn't really afford ice cream)
