JJ, do you think that Trump's recent rhetoric about annexing Canada will increase anti-Americanism here? I can definitely see this leading to an even more protectionist futute for this country

Great vid JJ. We can honestly say that Trudeau is the worst PM in Canadian history. Can you name any other PM with as many scandals, low disapproval and ego tripping than this one?

The British conservatives have leadership elections even with a popular prime minister. Thatcher famously got tossed when she failed to get the support of 60% of her party. Pierre has said he favors term limits. I will believe it when it happens.😅 we have a senator in America who ran as a term limits guy back in 1980, but he is still there

Trudeau has done unimaginable damage to Canada. Canada is far more divided than the rest of the world thinks. Any province can legally leave Canada whenever they want. Alberta is already fed up with Ottawa, and should a better deal from the USA come along, there is a good chance Alberta (along with other western provinces) could leave...

Most of these problems are just a byproduct of the nonsensical decision to have the party leader with most seats automatically be PM instead of actually have the parliament elect the PM via a majority vote. That way at least every PM would always be elected by democratically elected MPs

I don’t understand. If the liberal party is almost assured to lose, why do you need an interim PM? Why can’t Trudeau serve his term, decide to “spend more time with his family,” and then the Libs can appoint a nominee (who I guess would lose, at least, in a different political climate, COULD win.) Why does this liberal running for offfice need to be an incumbent?

We really need term limits for PM. More so for the fact it helps limit the damage a PM can do. Although the US isn’t perfect I think there are some things we could take from their system that would help us.

LDS people are awesome for the most part and they are much like Christians with less dogma and fear mongering about hell. Most Mormans don’t give a damn about church history and are unlikely to try to convert you unless they are about to go on a mission.

Honest question: what other choice did Trudeau have for resigning? Wouldn't anyone else in his position have acted out of self- and partisan interest? Is the issue here dodging the no-confidence vote so he could throw someone else under the bus instead of facing defeat sooner?

Agreed, regardless of what’s your political affiliation, a PM calling a snap election/ prorogation shouldn’t exist anymore. I think a big unsaid consequence of the Trudeau era is that from now on any politician talking about electoral reform will likely have skepticism since Trudeau and the liberals abandoned it pretty early on.

JJ, I’m on board with everything you say except that the only explanation for Trudeau’s actions are self-serving and political. If Trudeau waited like he did for his popularity to decline before declaring his resignation when the parliament has been calling for him to be gone for far longer, doesn’t that suggest he might be simply giving the people the chance to choose a leader who they actually want? He sees that he is not wanted by the people, so if he stays in then PP makes it in automatically, even if he isn’t the most desired PM by the people. Whoever the liberal party elects to run will barely be considered a real PM historically if they don’t win reelection.

Either party conservative or liberal would do the same. Neither party once in power is willing to do any electoral reform once in. Didn’t happen with Harper, didn’t happen with Trudeau

The last proroguing of the UK parliament was controversial too. Boris Johnson is said to have misled the Queen into agreeing to it. It was challenged, and the UK Supreme Court judged it unlawful and Parliament was reconvened. Just one of the fallouts of Brexit and examples of Boris’s shenanigans!

Somuch "legal" corruption from our goverment. Canada is just discusting the way our politic works. Like Trudeau calling a election before is Nazi vaccine passport. 💣🧨🔥And rumours circulating Turdeau is going to be arrested in conjunction with the P Diddy crimes. What’s more interesting is that he is COUSINS with Justin Bieber who is allegedly a victim of those crimes. 🧩Entered it was also cousins with the untouchable Hillary Clinton. 🧩As well as Alanis Morissette Celine Dion Camila Parker Bowles, Avril lavigne, Angelina Jolie. 🧩🧩They are traced back to Quebec and back to France in the 1700s a very old family and they are all related. I did a story on this day before yesterday. And I show all of the receipts from CTV in 2006 2007 and CBC 2016 our planet is being ruled/played by a bunch of monsters, who go way back in an old world 🌎 family and are playing us. It could be interesting to also do a deep dive retrospective on how this feels like the end of the neo liberal era, with Trudeau exiting and the Obama coalition seeming to be completely on the way out on DC. Biden seemed to be the last dying breath of an older era which is passing by now. It seems we're shifting away from a more globalist western world to one that is much more nationalist. Obama and Trudeau seemed to be this youthful transition to a more enlightened liberal world, but now have tainted legacies of being elitest and self-serving. It would be interesting to look deeper into the failures and transitions of this political era.

In scandinavian multiparty systems the parties usually have a 'elections commitee' chosen by the general assembly every year that has the task to put forward the best possible leader and board members for the general assembly. They can choose to keep or change the current leader, general secretary and central boardmembers. Their finished suggestion becomes the bedrock for the party to vote over, and has weight to the members. If the commite are unsure they give alternatives to vote for. When the commite have have published their suggestions then their members and sub orgs are able to forward alternatives, but will need a certain amount of party signatures to prove they are a legitimate challenger.

This process of a PM resigning and appointing a successor is what I hate about the British electoral system. If Canada thinks Trudeau's resignation is cynical, wait until you have to put up with five Tory PMs resigning in a row, with their successor being decided by less than 70,000 people, two of them being selected unopposed, and one not even staying in office to participate in a general election.

What can we do as regular Canadians to make these changes? Do we just have to wait, during this time of crisis, for a new party leader, and then an election, just to end up at square one?

Similarly Jacinda Ardern stepped down as Prime Minister of New Zealand and was succeeded by Chris Hipkins because no one in the New Zealand Labour Party ran against him for the party leadership. Hipkins was in office for about ten months before losing the next general election (though the National Party needed form a coalition with two smaller parties to obtain a majority).
