Honestly, scouts are wrong so often it is something you can not take too seriously as a player or coach. Very few people are actually good at rating talent of a player at a young age. If this was another field most of them would be fired quickly because they get it wrong to often.

Andrew Nichols Not true isn't wasn't because he was white it's because Scouts are lazy. There are plenty of white pass rushers current and in the past that were white and good. They do black players the same way it's funny when they try to find someone to compare a player to it's always someone from there race. Like Cam Newton they try to compare him to another black qb but physically and skill set he's more similar to Big Ben or Russell Wilson he's similar to Drew Brees but they have to find a "dual threat" qb to compare with. Scouts should do better than that

2:03 It's interesting, it seems like Watt is hinting about an unspoken bias against white athletes. All the things he mentions, "high motor, student of the game, gym rat, not overly athletic but will grind it out" are things that don't have anything to do with innate physical abilities. Dan Patrick even starts the discussion by asking, "Was there a stereotype about you?" Funny that everybody is sort of talking about this, but nobody comes right out and says it.

What else were these unimaginative team bureaucrats going to say about him? He's a white guy from Wisconsin. In their minds they're saying, "spend a couple years on special teams and get into coaching, son". And for most white guys coming into the NFL on defense they'd be right. For every JJ Watt there are dozens if not hundreds of undersized (which he was slightly when he entered the NFL) white prospects from smaller programs who would perfectly fit the scouting report. JJ Watt's not just fly for a white guy, he's one of the best defensive players in his generation. He's a freak of athleticism and motor. If more JJ Watts type players start breaking into the NFL and start succeeding like him the perception of white defensive players will start to change.

There are tons of great White defenders, this is just nonsense. Clay Matthews went through the same issues. Packers picked him in the first round and most analysts were shocked. Christ Borland was another one. ultimately he left on his own but in terms of being a football player he was a beast. I could go on and on talking about White defenders that are amazing but came in with a stigma. It's the racism that nobody gives a shit about.

Brilliant! People do not realize how significant a lower back injury is in normal life much less a professional athlete! That's why I compared it to Tiger Woods' knee injury years ago. His off-the-field problems led him to have an inconsistent career compared to what Watt has been able to do, but he was a key part of winning 2 Super Bowls. If Watt keeps going close to this pace, he will have the best career statistically, but he needs to help lead the team to greater success overall to surpass LT.

It just shows how much draft placement really matters. You can be a really high draft pick, but go to a crappy team that doesn’t help you adjust to the NFL as well as a better team would. JJ had his own coaches call him completely lazy his first few years. You think that didn’t fuel him to be better? Mahomes slid in the draft, but he got Andy Reid as a coach. I think of the three major coaches that took QBs in that draft, Andy Reid was the best coach that could fix Mahomes’s flaws. Andy is a wizard when it comes to getting the most out of a QB, as far as development and play design. You put those two together, and...well, you know what happened. Houston needed an immediate playmaker. Their initial starting QB that year (Tom Savage) lasted 30 minutes against a strong Jacksonville defense. At the time they were drafted, Watson was the most NFL ready. Mahomes needed to sit for a year. Fortunately for KC, they still had Alex Smith and a good team overall, so they could do that.

"Wont ever be a stud passrusher." That's just rude. Why would you say that about a kid tryna join the NFL.

Al Wilkins it's a draft review. They probably expected him to be nothing more then a run stopper

It's too bad he's already peaked. He'll never be the same again after back surgery. I'd say he has 3 more years tops...

Nick G ..I know...but when any injury involving the back occurs, productivity declines. Look at Tiger Woods for an example...he tore his knee at the end of a round and had to play extra holes in a playoff. He has never been the same since. Why? Because he had to redesign his swing and his back became compromised. The same can be said for J.J. in that he will likely favor his back and could begin getting other injuries to his knees and other lower extremity injuries. I hope I'm wrong. I hope J.J. returns as a beast because that is incredible to watch when he's fully healthy. We'll see in 2017...

Nick G He got injured! I guess he needed some recalibrations back at Cyberdyne Systems to get the 2.0 version installed....

You could say that, but Adrian Peterson tore his ACL and MCL,and came back better than ever,Drew Bree's ruined his arm is what everybody thought,he's insane now,and Peyton Manning had neck surgery and came back better than ever, the thing is all the players are athletes, but you cant say anything right now, because thats what happened to all of the players I listed, people thought they were over with, and then they came back amazingly

That's an unfair assessment. No one knew Tom Brady would've become what he became. He sucked in college and his draft combine was terrible
