Hello, Jēkabs Zariņš, I'm sorry to write with errors - I use google translate! You are incredibly inspiring. This year in the summer, I accidentally heard on You Tube your music and it changed my life! I have never played any musical instrument, I can sing and compose songs, but I'm always accustomed to other musicians. But now I wanted to play like you. I admire you! Finally I found a master who made me a custom kankles and now I'm learning to play ... And today I saw in the comments what your name is, and that you even have a website! This is happiness! Thank you for your lessons and your creativity! It is wonderful!

Such beautiful music! I have a podcast on world folklore and I'm doing a series on the Baltics. I'm putting together an episode for a Lithuanian story now and I was wondering if I might use a clip of this song in the episode? Full credit to you of course in the show notes :-)

Today was the first time I ever heard Latvian music and kokle (Radio Oira). I thought that what I was hearing was plugged into electronics. Then I saw this video and I realize the sound of a kokle is awesome all by itself. I play western acoustic guitar and now I want to try kokle. I just don't know if I can buy one where I live for a good price. You are very talented in my opinion.

Today was the first time I heard kokle too. Then I saw this video and realized it was not plugged into a reverb unit as I had thought from listening on the radio. After this vid I really want to get my hands on one. I'm not sure how to get started in the US but I will try to find out. This guy rocks that thing.

Just obtained one of these and am learning to play. My main questions are: what kind of strings should I use and what tuning would you use for a 13 string?
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Keegan, sorry for a late reply, for some reason I didn't see this post until today. Happy to hear you got a kokle (or a similar instrument?). If it still matters, I'd suggest to use the strings that the kokle craftsman is using. Some of the craftsmen use piano strings. Tha gauges can be found in my homepage - piekuns.com/?section=about-kokle If you want to play songs and practice from my tutorials, I suggest to use the GA-Bb tuning (also in more detail in my homepage), but for 12th and 13th string respectively add E and F. Hope this helps.
@amberhawke7 жыл бұрын
If I may add; you don 't say where you got the kokle, if it is one that was made in the US or Canada, most likely that type of kokle uses E-major tuning, not C or F-major tuning as are the majority of Latvian-made kokles. The US/Canadian kokles, also known as the Jansons/Linauts/Dravinieks kokles (named from the three refugees who got together in the U.S. after the war to come up with a kokle based on their memories), won't sound good tuned to C. So... from the lowest note (furthest away from you) to the highest: B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#. For strings, either piano strings or, for the higher notes, guitar strings will work.

When was a kitten the humans played in C or Aminor . Steel strings are modern but the old people said that gut strings were better for the hands.
