Novēlam lustīgi nosvinēt Jāņus!
Ozoliņi, ozoliņi,
Tavu lielu resnumiņu:
Trīs dieniņas saule teka,
Nevarēja aptecēti.
Ozoliņi, ozoliņi,
Tavu lielu kuplumiņu:
Trīs dieniņas irbe teka,
Nevarēja aptecēti.
Ozoliņi, ozoliņi,
Tavu lielu diženumu:
Meitas nāca dziedādamas,
Vainagiemi zarus lauzti.
Ozoliņi, ozoliņi,
Tavu lielu vecumiņu:
Es piedzimu, tev atradu,
Es nomiršu tu paliksi.
Sanākati, Jāņa bērni,
Zem kuplāi ozoliņa;
Zem kuplāi ozoliņa,
Tur Jānīša goda vieta.

This song is praising oak trees - one of the symbols of musculinity in Latvian folklore. During the summer solstice (Jāņi) men (especially those named Jānis) will wear crowns made from oak leaves. The lyrics are about how mighty, powerful and old the oak tree is. 😊

@@romekKR "līgo" is basically a connective. Most summer solstice songs have "līgo" in the end of every line of the lyrics. The meaning of the word is a bit blurry - some say it means "to sway", but not really and it's almost impossible to explain. Oak = ozols. Ozoliņš is a diminutive form of the word. :)

Before the lyrics, I’ll try to explain a few words: Līgo - sway (name of the first day of Midsummer) Jānis - Diety of fire (name of the second day of Midsummer) (just in plural - Jāņi) Oak tree, oak tree, Your big width, Three days sun came, Yet couldn’t come. Oak tree, oak tree, Your big bushiness, Three days Partridge came, Yet couldn’t come. Oak tree, oak tree, Your big greatness, Daughters/Girls came singing, While breaking branches for the flowers crowns. Oak tree, oak tree, Your big eld, I was born, found you, I will die, you will stay. Gather along children of Jānis, Under the bushy oak tree, Under the bushy oak tree, There’s the Jānis’ place of honor.

"I will die and you will stay" touches me deeply. There is an oak tree blight in Northern California. I have lost one of my two 30-year oak trees and the other is dying. I did not think I would live to see them go, and I have not said this to anyone else how sad and wrong this feels. I hope you understand. Thank you for the translation.

I am the son of two of the WW2 Home Army, who chose exile in America rather than death at the hands of the Soviet Army secret police - it's our genetic memories, that are weeping. Our Ancestors are calling to us, reminding us of what we once were - free and pagan and one with the Earth and all Nature. Look at 2000 years of separation from that connection to Mother Earth and the love and lore of our Ancestors has done to us. Look at the hate that rules so many hearts, in a nation who's religion supposedly follows the Prince of Peace. Your heart and soul are right to weep.

@@lifeimprovementknowhow3822 actually, the correct date from history is 23rd of June. (Nowdays mostly celebrate in 24) Flower crowns or just crowns made from leaves are worn by everyone, big or small. The correct names for this celebration of summer solstice is "Līgo" or "Jāņi", both are regocnised.

Guys can u tell me, those cloths represent different Latvia regions? I noticed too that some of them pronounce ligula and some of them in different way coz of region too?. I love this song i was watched dozen times so far, my favourite tune is from 2:56 to 3:18 and this generations singing from elders to youngest, that is fantastic. All the best, gratings from Poland
