J. L. Moreno Introduces One of His Filmed Psychodramas

The occasion was the first International Congress of Psychodrama, which took place in Paris in September 1964. Filmed by French television, this fragment shows Dr. Moreno explaining the psychodrama he directed there. “It is a marriage of two young people who belong to different countries.” The problem? “This very great enterprise of love and of romance has ended into a disaster.” Beyond this interpersonal issue, however, dr. Moreno insists that “we are here concerned with what it means in terms of the future of mankind.” He explains that psychotherapy started first with a single individual. “Then, we began to treat small groups”, and “now we are reaching out to treat large complexes of people”. The entire world, he says, may become “a subject for psychotherapy”. Why? “Because we have so many problems in common which cannot be handled in isolation.”
