I have finally heard someone I like singing this aria besides Callas! Even some of my favorite sopranos I don't care on this aria! Now I have 2 that I like. Callas and Varady (in that order).

Have you listened to Eileen Farrell's recording?
@artdanks4 жыл бұрын
@@Ruffiello I think I have. And although Farrell is one of my all time favorite singers, that particular performance surprisingly didn't excite me like she usually does. Possibly because, if I remember correctly, the tempo was too slow, which of course was not her fault. I just think the slower tempo was a distraction and did not allow for the electricity and fire that aria needs. I felt the same way with Shirley Verretts performance of this aria. She also is one of my favorites, so that's saying a lot. But both were phenomenal artists. I'm just very picky with Divinites du Styx.

Thank you very much. It's simply wonderful. With power and sensibility. As ever in her.

Truly majestic and triumphant. Strong and solid. She understands the aria.

Although this awesome singer would have been labeled a lyric spinto rather than a full spinto or dramatic soprano she sails through this monumental aria as if were the most natural thing in the world & for her timbre of instrument I can not imagine it sung more beautifully. That goes for everything I have heard from her from a varied repertoire which no other soprano artist could match during her time. Verdi, Mozart, Puccini, lighter Wagner roles, Richard Strauss, Bartok, the list goes on & on. Varady remains for me the greatest & most flexible lyric spinto soprano artist for the last quarter of the 20th Century, IMO.

Varady was one of the 29th century's greatest sopranos, her versatility ran from verismo to Verdi, Strauss and Wagner. Apparently she was content with her life with DFD who never sang opera in the US--although she sang here although she was based in Europe. Comments on the tempo are interesting.HIP performances are generally faster than what was considered appropriate. Klemperer's performance ran to five LP's (his Beethoven was slow as well). I doubt if baroque period ensembles would take as long. Varady was not an HIP performer but the movement had its impact on many contemporary conductors, Muti, for example.

The only blemish is the tempo which is too fast for my taste (used to having heard it played more slowly).
