This is the play CHIKIBU-SHIMA. If you type in the title there's a different performance by a another school on KZbin with English subtititles and summaries of the action. Both great. The play's about a visit of a court official to the island of the title on Lake Biwa, to worship at the shrine of the goddess Benden. The woman and old man who ferry him across then reappear as the goddess herself, then the old man transfroms into a dragon god who presents the official with treasure and swears to protect the country and its people. The play is by Zenchiku.

Such a good synopsis of the play. I think your autocorrect is probably at fault but I’ll just add that the name of the deity enshrined at Chikubushima is “Benzaiten”. Also have you seen the video of Inoue Yachiyo IV dancing to the jiuta song of Chikubushima? I would totally recommend you check it out if you haven’t, it’s absolutely breathtaking.

Thanks, hope it was helpful. I took the plotline from PG O'Neill's GUIDE TO NO THEATRE which gives short synopses of all the main plays in the repertoire. I'll certainly look up the performance you mention. Wonderful to have so many performances available now on KZbin: at least one good thing that's come out of the internet!@@edienandy
Beautiful. Lately i only listen to this music from theater No Truth of a dimensionless anguish. Voices and poetic laments that resonate like the last calls to the living of lost souls Invisible warnings that find a deep echo in our conscience still a prisoner of this dimension
