A great song from an interesting and worthy nation. The samurai and their descendants, even if they are always ready for death, but so painfully experience it ... "Senyu" is one of my favorite songs. Hello and thanks again from Russia.

"hata" of "niwakani hata to taoresi wo" doesn't mean "flag". It means "flop". Yet, in total I was so surprised to know that someone from abroad who can translate Japanese military songs into English very well exists ! Sorry for my poor English.

This song is way beyond debates of how horrible what ever side in WWII was, it is about how it sucks being a soldier and in that way it is kind of universal. Drop the history debate for a second and look at the lyrics.

the last pic in the slide show was Biruma no Tategoto, right? this new version (which is made by the JMSDF's band) is really sad. the original 30's song has got a more epic theme and unlike more recent cover versions, is not a mere tragedy.

and if we look for atrocities in war we'll be looking for wetness in a river. If all countries in a war commit atrocities, what differences them? The cause. And again, Japan's cause was to free eastern Asia from western domination. The western powers fought to maintain this domination. Chiang Kai Shek fought to be dominated by the west, Mao just sat still as the Japanese defeated his Chinese brothers. The Soviets and Germans also fought bloody battles. Try to understand.

rdlulu Right now what we need is not to "evaporate" the SAMURAI SPIRIT, but to bring it BACK! And yes, I say this as an American, not as a Japanese -- we had been enemies in the past, but now a strong Japan would serve us better than a weak one!

Everyone! It's useless to accuse countries of commiting atrocities in war. We are nothing but human beings, all of us! Try to recall one single country that hasn't committed war crimes during an armed conflict. The importance of war is not to remember the losses, but to cherish the future. Japan fought for an Asia free of western colonization. What did the Kuomintang fight for? For Western colonization. Mao? For Communism. Korea? Didn't fight at all. Who was the most noble? Ask yourselves that.

Many more would've died if America and the Allies invaded Japan (including many many Indians, or the rather the Raj at the time). It's the sad reality that the nuclear bombs actually saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides along with probably millions of civilians.

***** And the Chinese showed Americans the same treatment when they arrived in Korea during the Korean war. I'm american myself, and perhaps you should think about how the Chinese do business in war as well. Just think of how it went from "The flying tigers" protecting Chinese airspace and training chinese pilots. To china joining the korean war and performing acts of savagery against the people who once helped them. I have nothing against any race or nationality, but the Chinese joining the korean war is the reason korea still is not unified.
@kamarovcliffordsky34589 жыл бұрын
+IJN Nagato Well that's what happens when you attack a sovereign nation like Korea. Or do you actually believe America was there to 'liberate' the Korean people? I don't condone these traitorist nations to Socialism like North Korea, the Soviet Union, or 'Communist' China, but the Americans are in no way good along with the rest of the West. Of course the Chinese and now North Koreans were brutal to America, just as ISIS is today. Do you seriously expect a nation to just sit and roll over like some sort of pet when you invade them?
@Rook-m7v9 жыл бұрын
+Kamarov Cliffordsky I agree, even ww2 the western front was completely out of the economical interest of America, nothing moral about it, the cold war was foreseen and they wanted a slice of the pie. Pacific theater was more of a personal conflict. (And even still money is ALWAYS involved) My original point was just to express how every country is capable and sometimes guilty of ruthless savagery, and we should not let twisted history sugar coat who were the "Good guys" on the region. Although I think Every Grunt from every country should be respected in some way, back in these times information was not so easy to access, and joining and serving the military was supposedly a great honor. (And for a lot of Axis and ally countries, it was not a choice but you are FORCED to)

Behind this military song, how many other nations were suffered from the so called Imperial Army and their aggressive invasion? They probably sang this song while invading other countries and killing innocent civilians as well as soldiers trying to defend their family and friends. Japan should apologize for the pain they caused to other nations.

If you want an example of a righteous liberation, I'm sure you will respect the wars of French Revolution, the wars of independence in the United States, the first China-Japan war which liberated Korea from Chinese slavery.. Supposed liberations carried for a wrong cause: Mao's Cultural Revolution, all the wars waged by the USSR, Vietnam War..

So... you're fishing for an answer essentially saying that the country which has committed proven atrocities in Nanking and ally to those responsible for the holocaust is the most noble? I agree that we should look forward to a bright future instead of backwards at past savagery, but your last paragraph reveals a whole lot about your true viewpoint.

This song is from the Russo-Japanese war 1905, ever heard of the tokyo fire bombing, soviet partisans in finnish villages, soviets raping german children in ww2s final months, soviets taking out Finnish families from their home in the night and sending them to gulags? And other allied warcrimes

This song is like two guys get into their neighbor's place with no permission, try to steal things from the house, rape daughters of their neighbor and try to kill mother trying to get them away from her daughters. And then one of the guys gets shot by the father of the house trying to protect his family, and another guy became sad and expresses his sorrow for the buddy who just died in the house. I do not sympathize for these criminals because they deserve.

Loyd221 "U.S. kicked the criminals' asses and helped those being robbed and raped by these criminals. If these Japanese war criminals did not invade other nations for their greedy and selfish purposes, they would not have been beaten up like that." Bitch please, Americans bomb innocents. Read about Balangiga Massacre, and guess what, they still have the church's bell (hope the DPRK gives it to us). They also bomb innocents like the drones in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and use fake sob stories such as the "malala" monster to kill more innocents. Japan wants to free Southeast Asia, thank God the Japanese were avenged by the Vietnamese and the Indonesians. If you're talking about the "crimes" by IJA in China and Korea, that's a different Issue. That's not my problem.
