So, we had a Japanese exchange student stay with us for a year, and the joke in the house was adding -eru to the end of English words and I was speaking Japanese. He had a great sense of humor about it but one day he was like " you guys are jerks, I was on the phone with my mother and I said drive-eru, you've broken my English and Japanese." @@wooba4227 In Japan they actually use "otaku" as a derogatory term. Otakus in the original acception of the term means people who are fanatics of the anime/manga/j-videogame subculture (obsessively so, when intended as derogatory), while "weeaboo" is an invented term used to make fun of people who are obsessed by superficial aspects of japanese culture to the point of neglecting their own in favour of it, despite often barely knowing anything about actual Japan.

I was in the UK a year ago for my postgrad degree, and was often mistaken for being Japanese (though I can speak the language a little bit). The core factor is that people are really self-emerged into their own "Japanese" cultural atmosphere, and don't even care what real Asians would see them. And that's why I have the same feeling as the teacher after watching this skit.

"the word is also used as a title to refer to or address other professionals or persons of authority, such as clergy, accountants, lawyers, physicians and politicians [3] or to show respect to someone who has achieved a certain level of mastery in an art form or some other skill, e.g., accomplished novelists, musicians, artists and martial artists.
