It's about time scholars and historians set this classic masterpiece of 20th century literature next to the great sagas, fables, and epic poems of myth. Tolkien intended to create a grand mythos that he hoped would eventually be taken seriously when compared to the works of classic myth makers such as Virgil, Hesiod, Homer, Plato, Ovid, Hafiz, Vyasa, Wu Cheng'en, Snorri Sturluson, Thomas Malory, Dante Alighieri, etc. P.S. If Tolkien saw this documentary he would have finally felt that he had at last accomplishment his goal in life, by creating a REAL mythology.

i dont think jacksons version is strong enough for me, he should have made it harder and I mean the lotr more than the hobbit. One of the weak points for me was the main character played by Elijah Wood who was weak as hell too soft. where as the hobbit was much stronger

That's just one of about 100 corrections I would have made. Like them switching out glorfindel for striders girl. There's so many things that were changed unnecessarily from cannon to the director's imagination. They were good movies, but off a bit on the correct people and or their actions or strengths. I could go on for hours, but I'll spare you the rest of the rant.

@@govolsfightvolsfight2908 still impressed me at the time, but i could tell what i would have changed right away, he is the main character and so woods weakness stood out more than the others

Tolkien would be turning in his grave if he could see what has happened to Birmingham (and Britain) since his death.

You said the Hobbits were a very ancient race, but let me correct you in saying that in tolkien's works that the race of Hobbits didn't appear in middle-earth until the middle of the third age. So you got the making of everything by Eru, then the trees, lamps 1st, 2nd and then more than half way through the 3rd age is when they appear, so I don't in my opinion think that qualifys them as "very ancient" mabey more like newer race to middle-earth. Considering how old some beings that are still there like elrond, glorfindel who are way over 8,000 years old, then Hobbits are at the most 1,000 years old, but it's unclear the exact age, but middle of the 3rd is what I've seen in all my studies. I'm no Tolkien biography writer, but I have and have studied over a hundred books of his and about his middle-earth masterpieces, and keep coming up with that figure of their age.

So if the elves and men were made by eru, the dwarves by manway and the ocs by sauron. Who made the hobbits

@@imallrightme7336 the Dwarven folk were created by Aule , not Manwe. And the Hobbits were created by Eru. The Hobbits are a subspecies of the race of man, though it's not specific who, one would think that if they were a sub of men, then it would be Eru who created them. Some say that it was Melkor who unknowingly did when he created discord in Eru's songs in the beginning, but there's no evidence to support this 'opinion' thus bringing us back to Eru and the race of Hobbits being of the race of men, just evolved if you will. I hope that answers your question?
