2003 documentary about the creative process behind J.R.R. Tolkien's writing of The Hobbit. This is quite hard to find now, so I've uploaded it here.

Its amazing to think that without Tolkien, we would never have the entire High Fantasy genre. We wouldn't have Dungeons and Dragons. And I would never be in love with Fantasy as I have been all my life. Thank you Professor Tolkien, RIP Mellon! 💖

well I guess we would eventually have some kind of fantasy, somehow. I mean, pulps existed long before Lord of the Rings publishing. Lovecraft's legendarium, Solomon Kane, Conan... Obviously, it would have been different without Tolkien. But he wasn't alpha and omega of fantasy.

"In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." - One wonders what happened to that exam paper. Did the student who got it back keep it? Is it still out there somewhere?

"REVEL" could be intentional - some inscriptions use U and V interchangeably (likewise I and J). For example I've often seen "church" written "CHVRCH". It's a throwback to classical Latin, where U and V were different pronunciations of the same letter.

I am astonished that there are people who deeply dislike LotR! I completely understand that not all people would love it, but how is it possible to deeply dislike it! I just can’t get my mind around that!

✌ Thank you for the Video very much needed during these troubling times, Sir Tolkien's voice alone seems to calm everything down for a time and makes me wish that we should all be sitting under a tree somewhere reading The Hobbit. ✌

These four documentaries had to have been made much earlier than 2003. I would peg them at _least_ ten years earlier. The fashion/hair styles and primitive computer tech is a dead giveaway. Still, they are quite enjoyable. 😎☮️

The copyright at the very end says 2003. It's possible some of the footage was filmed prior to that. I guess these Tolkien scholars were slightly behind the times in their fashion sense and choice of IT equipment.

@Talking Tolkien I will wager that it was an older television production that was re-released on DVD after the Peter Jackson films caused everyone to have Tolkien fever. Yep, slap those puppies on disc and let's make some cash while the getting is good! 😉 PS: the giveaway was the children playing the Hobbit text adventure game. THAT was literally 80s tech, and they were LOVING it. Even mid-90s kids would have likely laughed at it. 😉

Would have been great if Graham McTavish had also hosted this one as he did the LOTR docs. How perfect would it have been if the future Dwalin actor himself had hosted a Hobbit documentary a decade before being in the films.

Despite being learned men, scholars seem to have very strong opinions against anything that seems to go against the grain (Tolkien publishing the Hobbit for instance). It’s probably true in all fields no matter how much people preach there’s open mindedness and acceptance. Tolkien seemed to have never let go of that wide eyed inner child of his no matter how old he grew, thank heavens for us that he followed his passion 😄

He's talking about Tolkien finally getting money for his work and listing it in his diary, using old money (pre-decimal): "You find him keeping an account in his diary - toothpaste: 3 and sixpence, matches: tuppence ha'penny. Old habits didn't die!"

The Hobbit is perfect in every possible way. The Lord of the Rings muddies the waters and drags Bilbo into a world he never would and never will belong. Oh woe am I.
