I love listening to you speak about books and what to look out for. My only issue is that I wish for books with DJs you would remove the DJ to show what the boards/spine actually look like.

I’ve got this same set of first edition, first impression UK editions. But mine don’t have dust jackets and the covers are shabby. Internally they’re in good/very good condition though. Anyone know if they’d have any monetary value?
@goldengalsclazy11 ай бұрын
I would recommend having Christie's and/or Sotheby's examining your books to find out their potential price value. They offer free appraisals and you're not obligated to sell them if you choose not to do so.

Why is a library like that so appealing to me?
@batikugglansbravader82759 жыл бұрын
+Aaron Marshall I've thought about that, for me it's a mix of having an automatic reverence for older books (it's like these objects are messengers from the past who've had ''a life of their own'' so to speak), the visuals and feeling that a book is a little isolated world onto itself. So it's more these very specific subjective impressions than anything else, though something everyone should be able to identify with is the comfortablility and easiness on the eyes that comes with book reading compared to looking at a screen.

Is there an anniversary set which are exact copies of these books that have been printed recently? Would love to know.
@landrysaathoff24182 жыл бұрын
The new illustrated edition is a single-volume reprint that keeps the spirit of these copies. If anything, it feels MORE like how Tolkien intended it.
@ConnieFWill2 жыл бұрын
not exact reproductions, but the 50th and 60th anniversary box sets that comes with the Reading Companion have similar cover art (that I think was also made by Tolkien) as well as foldout maps; so as close as you're gonna get in terms of new printings

Dude, why is it so difficult to find pictures or videos of each edition opened up? I just finished The Hobbit and want to get started reading the Lord of the rings. But I'm not sure if I want the single volume or 3 book set... And which of edition? damn it's so confusing. All I know is I want one with a map, and I'd like to have the ribbon book marker. so I think I'll go with the single volume but which edition should I get?

For reading I would recommend the single volume edition as there are no differences to text
@MsMeffie5 жыл бұрын
You might have solved your dilemma already but in case, the 50th Anniversary edition can still be found and is held to be the most complete to date. The maps are present, there are facsimile of the Book of Mazarbul, some parts are in red ink, and I am fairly sure they have the ribbon marker. (I don't have these books because I am busy trying to choose between these and a 1966 set.)
@nondasgoumenakis40515 жыл бұрын
I have the single volume with the black dust jacket. It has 2 maps and the fascimile of the Book of Mazarbul. It doesn't have a ribbon book marker. The book has a really nice burgundy color beneath the dust jacket. It is very nice but it's a bit heavy so it's not very comfortable to hold when you read it. I would recommend to buy the 3 book set, they are much more comfortable to hold when reading. In the end it depends on which edition you like having on your bookcase.

@dububro5 жыл бұрын
Actually, gloves are generally not worn when dealing with old books, even with priceless, unique manuscripts. Gloves desensitize your hands and make you more prone to accidentally tearing the book. Washing hands is enough. See: library.pdx.edu/news/the-proper-handling-of-rare-books-manuscripts/
