I went with the standard illustrated edition because it looks very similar in design to the 1st edition red pages and all. I absolutely love it so far. My only issue is the dust jacket gets dirty and damaged easily. I’m tempted on getting the pocket edition since it’s more durable

Thank you very much for this! I got my father the 2004 copy as a gift for his 50th birthday, but I myself was dissappointed because it didn't have any illustrations. My father didn't care, but I wished to give him the best Delux Edition. However, seeing this review made me happy that I still got him a good copy as you rank the 2004 one as your favourite. I'd like to get the 2021 edition eventually, both for myself and him, but you made me happy that the edition I got him was a great edition as you ranked it your favourite.

Thank you for the video, really enjoyed it and it was super helpful! I can't wait to watch the other Tolkien related ones until I decide what to get xD also, they're super fun... If I may, I’m a big fan of the Alan Lee illustrated three-volume edition from back in the mid-1990s that are still available for sale today: the paper is thick and glossy, the typeface both gorgeous and easy to read, it’s bigger than other editions. I just got them myself and I love them! Also, any thoughts on the Millennium Edition which splits all seven books (including the appendices) into separate volumes?
@brewingbooks
@brewingbooks 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Alan Lee is a one-of-a-kind artist. As to the 7-volume set, whilst I love the practicality of it, I’m not so sure LOTR deserves to be split up into so many “books”

The 1992 Alan Lee versions are superior to everything seen here, and probably any versión ever released imo. I finally bought the Two Towers from that years today, it cost me an awful lot of money, but cannot wait to complete the trilogy and have them alongside the single version book. The Hobbit version from around that time is absolutely beautiful too with Smaug on the golden cover…never bettered.

There are two things I would like to say about the grey hardback or leather bound edition (Whichever you prefer to call it). 1. The paper quality in my opinion is by the far the best (not considering the Alan Lee illustrated edition which I do not own). 2. This is bound with dried leather if I understand it correctly. It tends to easily adsorb oil from your skin so it will develop dark patches over time as you repeatedly handle it while reading as it just adsorbs any kind of oil like a sponge. Just something I wanted to put out there to help you in your buying decision. If you are not bothered by the oil adsorption of the cover, this one will be the best one to use for reading as it is very comfortable to handle, has good sized font and very good paper quality as I mentioned earlier. Also, the color of the pages is very pleasing, as it is neither too white, nor too yellow, just very pleasant.

I own three different versions of LotR. One of them only is in a single volume. It’s just a bit much to have that huge thing when you actually read them, pluss it’s in Norwegian because at the time I bough it finding books in english was actually pretty hard. Man that ages me to say, but it’s true. Had so ask my parent who was visiting the States to get me them in English. Endes up with cheep paperbacks with movie covers on them. Print is a bit small too. Anyway I just bought this Nice three volume hardcover set with Tolkiens original artwork peinted on them from HarperCollins (possibly the 60th anniversary editions). They just feel great to hold, and just are so comfotable ro read. Sure they don’t have a lot of extra art, but I found those with art by Alan Lee to have Pages that are a little to thick for them to turn in the most satifsting way for me. Might still get them later if I want something for display, but right now comfort was priority, and the ones I got still look damn good.

After a whole day worth of looking through editions of Lord of the Rings, I must say the George Allen & Unwin First Editions (and facsimile designs from 1954-63) have an excellent reader's aesthetic, timeless design, the BEST by far, but of course are $3k. The Houghton Mifflins 1960's publication comes close to the original quality look, but not quiet. I settled on the Bookspan 2001 editions which have the classic Tolkien Illustration covers like the Hardcover set you showed, Harper Collins 2005, but are softcover and based on original typeset.

A quick shout-out for some of the best editions in terms of quality and practical "readability". My three personal favourites are: 1. Any of the Allen & Unwin or Harper Collins single volume Deluxe India Paper Editions. Expensive, but magical quality. 2. 1992 Harper Collins Centenary 3 volume hardcover boxed set featuring 50 of Alan Lee's Illustrations, commissioned to celebrate the centenary of Tolkien's birth. Each slim volume is the perfect size for leisurely reading - the only downside is it is very hard to find. 3. 1999 Harper Collins 7 volume hardcover Millennium Edition. As Tolkien originally intended, six parts plus a seventh volume of appendices - just so easy to hold and to read.

I do agree with your opinion; the 2004 Deluxe Edition is also my favourite of this selection of books. I just prefer the style of this book as it fits with all the other deluxe books already published. The spine is also minimalistic in design than the more flashy publictations of the 2021 editions. @@greenskynz Hi, I‘ll try to help out. The recent hardcovers by Harper Collins are gorgoeous and have beautiful illustrations by Alan Lee and indeed have about 1 colored plate per chapter, sometimes more. The Hobbit (included in the boxed set) actually has additional pencil drawings and features noticably more art than LOTR as far as I can tell. As you May know, Alan Lee’s art inspired the look of the Peter Jackson films and he was hired as a concept artist for them. There is also a one-volume edition from 2014 which also looks great and is identical other than being all in one volume (and not including The Hobbit), although I don’t own it. Last year’s Tolkien illustrated edition features actual illustration (often actually rather „sketches“ and „doodles“) by Tolkien himself. However these are far more infrequent throughout the book and if you‘re looking for beautiful art, I have to agree with Tolkien himself, his art isn’t great Although some of it has a nice expressionist touch.. I recommend Nerd of the Ring‘s video „Tolkien Gifts 2021“ if you want to learn more about current Tolkien releases. He also mentions a different Hobbit illustrated edition by a different artist, which harkens back to old children‘s books and actually has quite a striking an different look from Alan Lee, which I always find interesting. The regular hardcovers are reasonably priced, but I think you can also still find a paperback of the Alan Lee illustrated edition somewhere. Hope I could help.

I understand why you didn't, but I think mentioning the standard Folio Society edition (not the newer LE set that was $1k and sold out in a couple hours) would be justified at the end of this video where you talk about the 3 separate volume sets. The print quality of a 1997-2007 era Folio version is a whole different level from any of these. The paper is beautiful, the binding is sewn, the cover artwork is unique and executed on another level, and they come in an excellent slipcase. There are indications that more recent printings have "soft" text for Folio Society standards, but I haven't seen it in person. I would seek out a nice copy from around 2000-2005 just in case. There's matching Hobbit and Silmarillion options, and if you're insane, you can find the same "guts" in a full leather LE that rivals anything on your shelf back there excepting maybe the Poetic Edda (also from Folio). The same internal design has been in the Folio Society editions since their first publication, with just the cover treatment and slipcase getting updated a couple times. The two new one-volume sets are most interesting because of the Tolkien artwork inside, presented roughly in context. I wish there were better execution on the red deluxe one.

If you can read the smaller paperback versions or the small printing in a dictionary, you won't have any difficulties with the "pocket" versions. Although, I might say that "travel version" is a better description. You wouldn't want to sit down to read the whole saga in the pocket version. But they're very useful for continuing your read when on an aircraft or away from home for a short spell. See my more detailed description, above.

The faux suede gray one really looks lovely. I was reading some reviews on Amazon though, and there were lots of complaints about the paper being bible thin and the cover being poorly attached to the paper block. I really need to see one in person to make up my mind.

They’re right about the thinness of the pages. It’s a ‘pocket’ book version after all so one would expect some compromises to condense the text in such a portable size 🙂

@@brewingbooks The blue one with plastic slipcase is the best if you are looking for great quality illustrations as they are printed on thick glossy paper and illustrations really pop into you. Don’t size can make a big difference. But I would also look into the practicality of handling the book. The Houghton Mifflin pocket edition is the best imo, but it does have quite tiny font. My only issue with it is the lack of counterparts for (at least) The Hobbit and Silmarillion. The 2004 deluxe edition matches with the rest of the set. Any news of super deluxe editions for the other books? P.S. I actually prefer the maps being separately presented and not part of the book, because it’s extremely inconvenient to check the map if it’s in one of the book pages - also prone to tearing.

Increasing of value is tricky as they don’t usually tend to do so - especially these editions. Hi there! So The Lord of the Rings is a single novel (and for reasons which will become evident when reading it, it is split into 6 books). The pocket version comes as 4 pocket-size volumes including "The Hobbit", "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King" bound in stunningly beautiful faux leather, as a box set. Each volume is even smaller than the paperback editions, being approximately half the size of the normal three volume sets.
