unbelievable....Scholl is even better now than on his recordings during the 90th´s. The one and only real Countertenor alive. It´s only Scholl whom I would prefer over a good female alto. His stunning, intelligent interpretation and his legato in "Wie jammern mich doch..." is out of this world. He´s a miracle, a living legend!

Scholl is just as wonderful as everyone here says. I cannot imagine this cantata sung more beautifully in heaven. But I am also in love with Rudolf Lutz, whose elegant, restrained, expressive and sympathetic conducting is engaging every player in the orchestra in a deeply-felt performance. His take on the opening siciliana is particularly lovely. Gotta hear this group live as soon as possible. It's an emergency!

Love the way he delivers the recitatives - from memory and looking intently at the audience, as if preaching. That's the true nature of cantata recitatives, but very seldom done in that way.

Unfortunately for all Scholl admirers (among which I count myself), the nasal element that, at the beginning of his career, used to creep in only at his top range (which anyway was higher than the average countertenor in those (pre-David Daniels) days)) has spread and increased to the point of forcing him, when trying to project more, to resort to the kind of reedy or metallic sound associated with voices like Dominique Visse and such. It's sad for me to say, and I'm almost certain it's not the result of any technical flaw or overstrain of his fault, but refusing to hear it doesn't make it less of a fact. Still, his expressiveness and musical intelligence remain unquestionable.
@lokmanmerican68895 жыл бұрын
@@tomilopes Very interesting. Though I'm entirely captivated by Scholl's singing, I'd like to learn more of what you said; is there another voice you can recommend that does not have this nasal , reedy effect, for comparison?
@@lokmanmerican6889 You are perfectly right to appreciate Scholl's SINGING, as I do, since a beautiful timbre is only one ingredient among others that make a great singer. I confess to being seduced by that ingredient more than I should (Callas is the classic example of a fabulous artist whose timbre is not to everybody's taste). Moreover, changes to the voice that result from the mere passage of time (as opposed to old age, which is definitely NOT Scholl's case, of course!) in good singers who don't misuse it (as IS his case) is just a bit of bad luck, but, as we can hear in this cantata, have little or no impact on the other aspects of fine singing. The "KZbin alternative" suggested by Gerd Wund - Alex Potter in the same cantata - is entirely adequate: a warm, rounded voice (some may say not bright enough, too veiled; not I!.the same might be said of Scholl in his prime, as a a good thing, not a bad one). Anyway, the best comparison for my point would be with Scholl himself, his live St Mathew Passion with Veldhoven (on Chanel Classics) but especially his first Harmonia Mundi recordings (German cantatas, Lute songs), until the one of this very same Cantata coupled with BWV 35, with Herreweghe. I just wished that people who are fans of a singer wouldn't become deaf to their idol's less positive points when or if they appear, instead of going on as if nothing happened (perhaps it's not conscious, but it's false anyway). Just a personal note from someone who's studied and experienced a lot of singing: the most beautiful countertenor voice I have heard, and probably will ever hear, was Gérard Lesne. Such a pity for his many admirers that he decided so soon to dedicate himself to the lesser known Italian and French repertoire and avoid Bach or Handel (his English is terrible, it's true - witness his Byrd and Dowland, but he could improve it if he wished to). I can only dream of Erbarme dich or Es ist volbracht sung by him... Fortunately, his younger countryman, Damien Guillon, seems to have inherited something of Lesne's voice, and is singing plenty of Bach!
