One of the most perfect performances, even from an ensemble famous for producing them. Perfect realization of Bach's perfect musical realization of a particularly vivid text. The solo singing is perfect. Daniel Johannsen really takes the mantle from that other great Viennese Bach tenor, Kurt Equiluz. Just amazing! Thanks, again, to all those bringing us this amazing music. Thanks for getting us all through these weird times. Peter Watchorn

To think that this Cantata was performed to a congregation at one time and now the world can listen to it over and over again. That's mind boggling. The 'Brook' flows Prestissimo & unrelenting it's amazing, the Ensemble is so tight...we are swept away by a cataract! The tenor aria(DJ-you really take it away) would've been a Show-case piece in a 19th Century Opera and here it's an integral part of edifying Divine Service, tucked away, only to be resurrected by such dedicated musicians . Thanks for my oxytocin fix for this Sunday!

And not just this one…. Every week a masterpiece, and the people had no idea. And Bach wasn’t writing “a masterpiece” he was just writing his weekly work. He had no idea he was an all-time genius, he was just earning his daily bread, and somehow that makes his genius even more awe-inspiring. How many survive? 200 or so? And how many are lost? And how much have we lost by those absent treasures? The cellist is glorious.

So Schnell…

This is an extraordinary performance at every level, absolutely true to the underlying meaning of this somewhat bleak text. The urgent pace and idiomatic phrasing capture this in a way no other performance can begin to equal. The opening chorus, with the superb playing of the ensemble is masterful but the tenor aria, sung by the incomparable Daniel Johannes, was quite overwhelming ... astonishing for his mastery of this amazing pace, astounding pitch, perfect diction, breathing and beautiful sound. I really didn't believe any tenor could sing like this ... Wow!

After the blistering pace set in the chorus, how much more schnell can the water run? Masterful and enjoyable, as always. Maybe it's due to having grown up listening to Fritz Werner's much more ponderous performance, but I think I'd prefer slightly slower tempi, mostly in the chorus; the torrent would be fast enough if it were just a hair slower and even 'An irdische Schätze das Herze zu hängen', which seems to have an intrinsic tempo, might benefit from just a few instants more to savor its profundities.
@herrickinman93032 жыл бұрын
The text of the opening chorus has nothing to do with running water, and the text of the tenor aria refers to rushing water, not running water: "As quickly as rushing water flows, so hurry the days of our lives ..."
@rdbchase2 жыл бұрын
@@herrickinman9303 I did not suggest any connection between the text of the chorus and running water; I alluded to the text and the tempo of the aria by rhetorically asking how the latter could be any faster than that of the chorus. Rushing water can be said to run.

Beautiful cantata and well performed. But in my opinion Georg Philipp Telemann's TWV 04-06 "Ach Wie Nichtig, Ach Wie Flüchtig" is better. Teleman is for me a more successful composer than J.S. Bach. Both are based on "Ah wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig" (Ah how fleeting, ah how insubstantial) is a German Lutheran hymn with lyrics by Michael Franck, who published it with his own melody and a four-part setting in 1652.
