MrClaviers, different editions make it difficult for performers. In my score I read «Presto». But I also read that «Presto» is not to be found in the original score.

Amazing that Bach was relatively underappreciated in his day. But that's often how it goes with historical figures of genius--not recognized for it in their own day.

This performance is extraordinary! Hands down. I've heard so many performances of the piece over the years, many of them very good, even great. But this one, at least to me, is so wonderfully balanced and nuanced. I love the way the baroque brass instruments blend rather than overwhelm, particularly in the opening sinfonia, as so many performances do. What a pleasure to hear, and watch, this ensemble of singers and players. I know I will return to it many times in the future.

the tempo you have chosen to begin the sinfonia is terrific - you can really move and relax at the same time and the organist doesn't seem to be engaged in a speed contest with the orchestra. in so many recordings and performances of this piece either the organ, the orchestra or both end up taking an already-too-fast beginning tempo to something two notches faster by the end and all the conductor can do is flap his arms faster and faster to match the runaway ensemble. it's not a contest. furthermore the forces employed in the orchestra nicely work FOR the organ and not against it - also in many recordings the organ becomes lost by the end of the sinfonia, resulting too often in what i call the "I'M STILL HERE" final trill of the organ. excellent job.

Oh, that makes me cry! When you've studied J.S. Bach with scholars like them you really do feel it in the gut! It's just great that this wonderful German singing & playing (or Swiss singing) was part of my life too. It makes me feel passionately European. I loved Bach so much when I sang it I just wanted to become a composer, not a singer. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I wanna know how it feels to write over 600 compositions by the end of my life. Just to know what it's like to actually be him. I didn't have it singing countertenor so much as with composition. I really feel it in the gut as a composer, but I had a girlfriend who was a Bach soloist. I studied Early Music in Wuppertal.

The thing I love about Bach the most is his organisational skill. I can't believe the amount of things achieved. He wrote more music than anyone else but that wasn't the only string to his bow or the only thing he did with his life. His life was perfect. He didn't have any regrets. He achieved what he set out to do in life. That's why I love him more than any other person. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. He's the ideal male role model for any scholar. He was the greatest musician of all time. He wasn't a joker but he did laugh. I like him for it over 1000 pieces of music, teacher, choirmaster, instrument designer, Tontechniker, 3 wives, 11 children & a legacy 2nd to Jesus Christ. I wanna be him!

I have often wondered why Bach did not feature the organ as an obbligato instrument in more of the cantatas. This one shows just how effective that can be. Notice that the first chorus (after the concerto like opening movement, also used elsewhere in his work), is the original version of the Gratias Agimus from the great Mass in B minor.

THE SECOND MOVEMENT IS IDENTICAL TO THE MASS IN B MINOR BEING A CATHOLIC MUSIC DEMONSTRATING THAT BACH MADE NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN PROTESTANT AND CATHOLIC MUSIC. MUSIC IS MUSIC.
@JohnHarutu
@JohnHarutu 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. But he would have regarded it -in some sense- as "Christian" music. Granted, he sometimes set "sacred" music to "secular" lyrics. But check out one such example: The first movement of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 is the same as the Sinfonia to Cantata No. 174. But in the Sinfonia he adds not only oboes, but horns. And those horns make the music SOAR. There's some kind of transcendence occurring here.
