Fantastic…! Vocalists, instrumentalists, conductor…. ALL…! And last, but not least… COMPOSER…!!! Although the entire work, especially, in this performance, is a gem, special mention must, I feel, be made, of Bach’s typically highly inventive intertwining of those delicately passionate recorders - like a pair of golden threads - throughout the length of the final choral movement.

How sad that Bach hadn`t the chance to write operas. It´s hard to imagine more pure emotional and genuine dramatic composing in the 1st half of the 18th century than his. The trumpet aria is the peak of "baroque avantgarde" and neither Handel nor Hasse, both experienced masters, were able to express human feelings in such a unique, direct and highly sophisticated way. Thanks again, dear Mr. Lutz for the fabulous, vivid interpretation of this timeless masterpiece.

I wrote a novel where Bach - in a fictitious setting - composes an opera: Thomas Josef Wehlim: Sebastian. I can send you a copy of it for free.

Church music is what he wanted to write the most. And thank God; it's some of the best music ever written. If he has tried to focus on opera like Handel did at first, this world would be a darker place.

And yet the film editors chose to ignore his one page long coloratura passages sung, seemingly, in one intake of breath, to show violins, bassoons and trumpet in passive musical passages when Helm is the principal and more expressive instrument at that moment.

Eine famose Aufnahme von Bachs schönster Kantate. Nur die Altarie wirkt etwas zu gehetzt - ein bisschen geruhsamer - und es wäre perfekt.

Agree 100%. That is a fantastic aria. The singer did a fine job. But overall the tempo of that number was too fast. Instead of deeply introverted and heartfelt, it seemed nervous.

Something to chew on from the tenor aria: Let whole rivers of tears flow, Because there has befallen you an irreparable loss Of the most-high’s favor. You were handled like Gommorah, Though not actually annihilated. Oh, better that you were utterly destroyed Than that one presently can hear Christ’s enemy blaspheming Him.

Either... this film editor is an ignorant fool to cut away from the bass in the middle of the two longest coloratura phrases (one page long!!!) ever written for the human voice which he seems to sing beautifully with one single intake of breath, to show bassoons and violins or trumpet for no reason other than dotted notes, and passive trumpet passages, or he is masking an edited performance that is not live at all and the bass did not sing those long eternal phrases in one single intake of breath.

@@alaindubouetiez910 Agreed. Love Rudi Lutz and the Bach Stiftung. This was my subtle way of not call out the film editor the outright fool that he is for showing passive instruments instead of showing when the Bass is singing olympian phrases in one single breath.
