I'd say a little better than nice but I know and have certainly said something like this myself at times. The amount of work and life that goes in to sacrificing for this achievement is beyond... "nice". Generally 'nice' is a shit word. Maybe "Glorius", "superb", "delightful" "eye opening" - or many more...?

I enjoyed it, of course, but can the tempo of "Ich will doch wohl Rosen brechen" be described as adagio ma non troppo?

oftentimes Bach (and other baroque composers) when they wrote 'adagio' they meant it in the original Italian meaning 'ad agio'='at ease' -not necessarily a slow tempo then. So 'adagio ma non troppo' should/could be read as "not too much at ease", and I think this feeling of restlessness is rather well rendered here (of course that indication is more about the colour of the aria more than its tempo, so other interpretations are easily possible and valid).

I am an absolute Bach fan, in particular I love the Cantata series by the Bach Foundation! However, I can't get used to a male singing the alto part. No disrespect to the current countertenor - it just sounds unnatural.

Knowing that men and boys sang all parts when the cantata was originally performed doesn't help?

@@rdbchase I know that in those times most parts were sung by males (even castrati). It just sounds unnatural to my ears. There are so many good female altos out there.

I still don't know why but German sounds better in music with a story... French sounds pretty, Spanish sounds grumpy or degrading to women, English sounds dry (naive speaker here) but German sounds like it feels like an actual story.
