Concerto a-moll BWV 593 3mov.

It has been a real treat to hear BWV 393 played on this chamber organ with its intimate and charming sound. It has been a new experience. Thank you for playing it to us in its entirety. I think the nature of the music better suits a string orchestra, as Vivaldi conceived it, but transcriptions are always a compromise. Still, that is beside the point. The transcriptions of works in the Italian concerto form suited the needs of the court of Weimar when Bach was employed there, and Bach himself was keen to study the Italian masters. Unlike his adventurous contemporary, Handel, he didn't manage to go to Italy himself. Lucky also for Vivaldi that he did make these transcriptions. The public had forgotten him by the end of the 19th. century when the Bach society published them in an updated form, causing interest in him to be revived. So nowadays we have the opportunity to listen to Bach or Vivaldi as we please, and we are not obliged to listen to Vivaldi in transcription. It was not ever thus!

Thank you for always listening to my performance. I also really like the sound of the original string ensemble in this piece. It has a very light feeling to it!!😊

Ha! Lang actually wrote of Handel (with regard to his raising of his children and putting those who could through medical school): "unadventurous". As in, he was "steady" and "thrifty". (See page 10 of his 1966 book on Handel which can be borrowed at Internet Archive*) I'd say both of these great composers were extremely dedicated to both their craft and other aspects of their lives. Bach himself did undertake some significant trips, including the trip he took when 20 years old on foot to hear / study Buxtehude - a trip of 250 miles. And, as you point out, "subject to the requirements of the service" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqXRoIGalp1nY9Esi=aqD6KpYFrSp_E53b [as Captain Aubrey puts it in O'Brien's books and the excellent film made in the early 2000s - note whose music is playing here]) is a theme in any case, even for people today. I.e., each of these composers had varying levels of control over various pieces they wrote. Some pieces were written, re-written, &/ transcribed due to constraints of musicians, money, time, etc. available. You've generally qualified some of what you wrote, but, I think a little more qualification might be useful. Ultimately, the output of various composers is intimately tied to realities of life all of us encounter as humans. Further, each of us may have strong preferences for one version of a piece or another - and certainly one composer vs. another. Of course, another way to go, that can actually be more instructive over long periods of time, I think, is to angle more towards "beginner's mind" and "non-judgment" - not thinking it is settled, even in our own minds, that some "X" is the "greater" or that "clearly" some "Y" is "just the result of trade-offs that had to be made" or etc. The overly analytical side of all of this can really suck some of the joy and wonder out of all of the great music we've been so fortunate to have been left by those who were "before our time". (Of course, I write this even just to remind myself, as I have a tendency to veer into the analytical quite often, still.) * There's relatively little I find outright annoying these days, but KZbin not allowing seemingly any linking to external sites is disgusting and just directly counter to the entire basis of the _WEB_ (Berners-Lee and hyperlinking and all that - literally what Google's entire business is based on [PageRank] - really terrible, I should stop using KZbin)

@@garrghhh My goodness, at first glance I thought you were referring to the Chinese pianist, Lang Lang! Not so however, and what a delight to be reminded of Paul Henry Lang's magnificent biography of Handel. Dated now, of course, and Handel scholarship has moved on apace, but this book is my favourite work on Handel. Outstanding prose and where appropriate a delightful use of irony and veiled humour. Mr Lang made it his 'magnum opus' over many years, and he captures the spirit of Handel as I think no other biographer does. The final section dealing with Handel's death I found quite moving. Anyhow, I've taken a look again at my copy and turned to the reference you give on page 10. However I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean. Whilst it is true that Paul Lang uses the word 'unadventurous', he is referring to 'the family and surroundings' into which Handel was born, and not to Handel himself as your comment suggests. Certainly the reference has no bearing on my own use of 'adventurous' in my previous comment.

The first movement was much better. This reminds us that JS Bach is the undisputed master - who would never have written anything so banal, even if he thought it was worth transcribing. But beautifully played as ever!

Thank you very much for your comment. Compared to the original score, it is really nice and Bach arranged it for organ solo. But for me, especially the 3rd movement is difficult to play😅
