These notes are the same for all pianists; but under Gould's fingers they are added the magic of his touch and produce a sound nobody can reach.

I’m leaning this concerto right now and have been listening to many pianists performing this piece. And by far Gould’s interpretation is the most closest to me. I might play the left hand slightly with a lighter touch though. Everything else is so perfect 👌

It's an amazingly beautiful performance. A convincing interpretation in every way. No notes are neglected, and there is no mention of undernutrition. Guld has a great command of the overall structure of the music and doesn't waste time telling you what it is. Thanks, David!

The combined accomplishment of both composer and performer here is simply unworldly. It is beyond art. The word “genius” has been so corrupted and downgraded in modern parlance that it’s application here seems ironically inappropriate and trite.

BTW: Gould really disliked the Italian Concerto, and rarely played it. He called it "Bach for people that hate Bach". This is true to some extent, as it's probably the most "style galant" piece Bach composed, excluding transcribed works from people like Vivaldi. Still, it's a fantastic piece, so Gould could just dislike it more on principle than on quality. lol

i think one always has to take what he says with a pinch of salt. certainly you can tell how much he loves playing the quieter introspective moments in Bach's work. but like the 26th Goldberg variation or the Bb major prelude from WTC1, i think he must have enjoyed ripping into the lively stuff, and the robustness and vigour of the Presto certainly doesn't sound to me like someone who isn't enjoying the playing. Surely not everything has to be the 6-voice Ricercar of the Musical Offering to be worthy of his attention haha.

I agree, all of his interpretations either have too much rubato or are very staccato. I question why his partitas are so revered, I take Gould and even Zimmerman over him. I personally have been listening to Zimmerman's Bach partita number one and prefer it over Schiff. @@charles-valentinalkan5681

Truly uninspiring. Allegro: mostly boring, aggressive banging, lacking any subtlety--piano sounds like a rickety old box. Andante: he plays a very slow 6/8, instead of 3/4. We need 3 beats, Mr. Gould! Otherwise dementially slow. When I woke up, the Presto: played faster than what the counterpoint can support. The result is unbearable. Most other recordings of GG are genius. This one is not good.

¿Golpeando?
