The title of French Suites does not originate from Bach’s hand: they were called “Suites pour le clavessin” by the composer. To judge from the number of copies made by his pupils, they likely played a significant role in domestic music-making in Bach’s home and in his teaching, and they remain among the most approachable of Bach’s keyboard works for performer and listener alike. As in the English Suites, Bach included the customary sequence of allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue, with additional short movements between the sarabande and gigue. Unlike the English Suites, however, they have no preludes and are generally of a more modest scale, both less stylized and less demanding in technical terms.
Wolfgang Rübsam is internationally known as an authoritative Bach interpreter, from recordings of the organ and harpsichord on several different labels. He has recorded the French Suites before, on the piano. Made in March 2020, this new account is played on the kind of lute-harpsichord that Bach would have had at home for both music-making in the family and for teaching. The touch required and the sonority produced is delicate, subtly shaded and closely related in its effect to the music of Bach’s French contemporaries, whose music he knew well, such as François Couperin, Jean-Philippe Rameau and Louis Marchand.
The cantabile style of playing heard in these marvellous performances is directly inspired by the instrument, a lute-harpsichord built for Mr. Rübsam in 2015 by the acclaimed American instrument-maker Keith Hill.

This performance is so different from how these Suites are normally played on the modern piano! The slower tempo is well-suited for the sound quality of this instrument. I love that the much slower tempo brings out a meditative quality, even in the dances that are faster. Each note can be fully felt at this speed. Daniel, I am pleased that you like my Lautenwerk. My instruments are designed by me because there are no existing Lautenwerk from the 17th or 18th centuries. Also I make my instrument to be played in this expressive cantabile style. This style is inspired by Bach himself when he wrote in the preface of the Inventions and Sinphonias that the pieces are intended to be played “above all in a cantabile style”. There is quote from a man named Friedrich Gripenkerl who wrote: “ Bach himself, his sons and Forkel played the masterpieces with such a profound declamation that they sounded like polyphonic songs sung by individual great artist singers. Thereby, all means of good singing were brought into use. No Cercare, no portamento were missing, even breathing was in all the right places...Bach’s music wants to be sung with the maximum of art.” Griepenkerl was a great grand student of JS Bach because he studied with Nicholas Forkel who was himself a student of W F Bach. And we know from a student of Bach, named Kirnberger, that Bach valued above all a feeling of total independence of voices. All this amounts to a playing style that is as close to what Bach himself intended. As his son, Carl Phillip Immanuel Bach, wrote in his treatise on playing keyboard instruments, to avoid everything mechanical and slavish...to play from the Soul, not like a trained bird.

You can view this instrument and others I have made at my website: keithhillharpsichords.com. It is just a harpsichord strung in gut. Bach had two Lautenwerk in his possession at the time of his death. It was said that it was his favorite instrument.
