Absolutely fabulous voice. I wasn't expecting such an intensely moving performance. Valentin's singing is so expressive and the rich, dark though mellifluous timbre of his voice is unbelievably beautiful. The musicians too are all magnificent and so sensitive. To my mind this is one the very finest interpretations of this great aria on you tube. Absolute joy.

A transcendently beautiful work of art. Few people realize that this melody is the inversion of the melodic structure for the large work for chorus that follows, and which finishes the Matthew-Passion. I will be forever grateful to my music theory professor, Henry Onderdonk, for sharpening my ear to Bach's internal logic and fondness for mathematic magic--the cryptic, worldly genius of a saintly churchman.
@ianodonnell60109 ай бұрын
How so? Do you think you could explain a little? I’m trying to get into music theory and analysis of music myself
@prototropo9 ай бұрын
@@ianodonnell6010 Sure, Ian--I'm always excited to hear someone cares about music theory, which can seem formidable, almost incoherent, to non-musicians, but makes good sense to musicians and serious music lovers. It's very logical, like math or astronomy, and unlike quantum physics, which is often counterintuitive, or learning new languages, with their many exceptions to regularity. Bach and Mozart both loved the geometry and puzzles that can be fashioned in music composition. The entire Baroque period, overlapping with the Classical, was an exploration in polyphony (multiple, independent voices), with various instruments or voices moving in engaging, creative ways but bound by strict but logical rules governing consonance and dissonance, all owhile following an arc of exposition-development-recapitulation, similar to a narrative arc in literature. The Western theoretical system is founded on tonality, unique among the world's musical traditions. Arabic, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and African musical systems all entail their own impulses, emphases and complexities. European tonal music begins with a melody supported by a bass line--the "ground" or "figured" bass--and usually two other internal voices that flesh out a chord, which always possesses at least three voices. (Two notes are an interval; three make the triad familiar to our ears.) The melody is considered the leading line, and is often the highest as well. All the lines of a composition honor triadic harmony as they progress through 12 equally spaced tones between octaves, pivoting in relation to the home key and always returning to that key as the governing tonal center. Each of the 12 notes that comprise an octave can be home keys for a composition. The Western sound and system of composition has always been a part of an Academic Canon, its systemization beginning with Pythagoras, and made more rigorous by Boethius and Pope Gregory, amongst many other scholars. It evolved through Medieval chant, passed through troubadour and madrigal writing of the Renaissance, and arrived in approximately the mid 17th-century at the sound now very familiar to us. From 1650 to 1950 the theory presented to students of music was called Common Practice. That sounds painfully banal but it consolidates the beauty of Baroque, Classical & Romantic eras of composition and continued to influence Modernism, Neo-Romantic, contemporary opera, vaudeville, ragtime, klezmer, jazz, folk, country & western, gospel, sacred choral writing, rock & pop, all the dance rhythms, like boogie, polka, square-dance, swing, two-step, samba, tango, rhumba, salsa & disco, as well as punk & reggae, rap & hip-hop, Broadway musicals and Hollywood soundtracks, electronic, experimental & minimalist music. The inversion I mentioned is simply turning the direction of a melody upside down, so, for example, after a phrase that goes do-re-mi-so-fa-mi-re, the inversion could start on any note but position the line in mirror symmetry--like so-fa-mi-do-re-mi-fa. Or if the inversion begins a step higher--la-so-fa-re-mi-fa-so. Does that make sense? Then there's fugal counterpoint, which is like a round (row, row, row your boat) but the additional voices come in on different notes, not the same one, as in "row your boat." These tools for variation are many and wonderful to study. I hope you pursue it, Ian, because it will only make your love of music deeper and more interesting. It's like the difference between standing on a hill overlooking a beautiful landscape, or flying over that landscape in huge, slow circles, seeing how geology uplifted ancient seabed, how clouds must rise to pass over a mountain range, etc. In other words, understanding how music is put together is like understanding an entire world in three dimensions, so well that you could creat a new world yourself. Its so much more rewarding than hearing a work on the radio and letting some pleasant sounds wash over you, like sitting on a hill and looking at the pleasant but static scene below. Knowing more is always better.

Thank you so much! This was really helpful! I’m currently trying to tackle analyzing the end of the Passion right now, and I think I see how the opening measure of the chorus Wir setzen uns is the aria’s opening measure inverted but stuck from there

@@ianodonnell6010 Oh good. Hey, Ian, I should have assumed you already knew most of what I blabbed on about. Sorry to lecture without asking first! In any event, Bach's works are like textbooks in their exhaustive reach across different compositional forms and exercises, and his artful solutions for the challenges he set himself.
