This is definetly the Testamentum of music at all. This recording is not very fast. Since Gardiner in 1990, Harnoncourt live in 1985, Herweghe et al. this is a good normal. Modern Bach interpretation discusses very much about higher tempo to make the structure and the harmony in context clearer.

Ged Agnors The Cross is the symbol that Jesus took pain and suffering for the redemption of the world. (As it was prophecied by the old prophets bevore: " Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows.." [Isaiah 53,4]) We don't admire the cross, we admire that Jesus was willing to take the wrath of God in the sinners place on the cross. Bach believed this with all his heart and so he composed the "St.Matthew's Passion". So I think the cross is not in wrong place here, because it is the center of the whole work..

I'm agnostic, and I hate the cross...but not because of its religious meaning, but because it is aesthetically horrifying and visually unpleasant. Just an ugly, awkward cross that 1) shouldn't be WHITE, as it melts with the background; and 2) shouldn't be hanging horizontally overhead (not to mention all those ugly wires). I'm sorry, but I find this cross just hideous. Painful to watch.

The big choruses are necessary. The tiny modern "low budget" choruses are too small to perfectly present the music , especially in large concert halls. Karl Richer was educated by Bach's successors Karl Straube and Günther Ramin at the Organ, harpsichord and in the Thomas Chorus in Leipzig. BTW: Bach himself complained having a too small a chorus und too few instrumentalists to perform a good church music. But the city hall of Leipzig refused to give him the musicians he wanted.
