J.S. Bach - Toccata & Fugue in D minor, BWV 538 - 01 Toccata (Synthesized)

The "other" Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The more I listen to this one, the more I am thinking that perhaps the fame and attention going to the other one (BWV 565) puts this undeservedly in the shadow. This piece is truly exceptional.

Strong work on the trills. I always thought synthesizers have unique capability to highlight details of Bach's pieces. The Dorian seems like Bach's use of Shepard Tones to increase suspense.

You're welcome, and yes, I usually look for online scores, which are scans of reputable music publishers like Breitkopf or Peters or Ricordi (more than one if there are questions and variations), then I translate them to MIDI note by note, then I check them thoroughly for mistakes by listening to several interpretations. Then the fun begins when I start putting sounds to them :)

I love this, it's fantastic, but the 'decay' is too abrupt, in certain places. I have heard this piece performed in a big church, and the detaché elements -- which are in the original manuscripts -- don't die away like that in a live performance. [I checked at Bach Digital to make sure.] The reverb covers up these breaks, which Bach knew all about, and was counting on. Sorry to be critical, since this is really beautiful. What I am talking about first happens at the 13 second mark, then 14, and so on.

Eric, thank you indeed for being "critical", that's what I need. I can definitely see your point. Truth is that I am always wary of adding too much reverb, because it is like adding cream or bacon to a dish. Of course it's going to taste better, but sometimes it is destroying the structure. However, when it comes to organ music, your observation that "Bach counted on the reverb" is spot on. I confess I did not think about it - so stay tuned because I am going to release a new video that contains a revised toccata and a revised fugue together. I am going to incorporate your feedback.

Hi! Thank you for the feedback - there's someone commenting in this same video who has the opposite opinion. So I guess is't 1-1 :) But seriously, I have posted more than 100 Bach videos, I don't seem to find any more inspiration for cover images that are catchy and new, so I resorted to MidJourney. Perhaps I have to provide prompts more conventional.
