You are FABULOUS in how you teach. This is my go-to video for doing a cuff (I have been using it to help me cuff my husband and son's pants for over 6 years since I first saw it!). Others have done this video but theirs is so cumbersome to follow. I do appreciate your creating this video. For ones like me, who do not sew regularly but can do a lil something-something, this is extremely helpful. Please keep up the fine work you do!

I’m new to sewing and loving it. It’s helping through the depression from loosing my father recently. I want to eventually get into making big men’s clothing (yes I’m a big guy) because most stores don’t offer fashionable items without breaking my bank. One issue I’m faced with is how to sew on pants, buttons for suspenders (without a shank)

@JSternDesigns

So sorry I missed your comment earlier... I haven't done a reversible vest yet... I think it would be similar to finishing a neckline and armholes ... Sew shoulder seams of fabric and lining. Put them right sides together sew the CF edge and neckline. Turn to the right side and then finish the armholes & side seams as shown in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6u9gpiHlpuJj6M I think you need to leave a hole in the side seam so you can also so the hem edges together and pull it through the hole in the side seam... Hope this helps! thank you for watching

Hi! I’ve recently started seeing as well and like everyone else mentioned I really appreciate your step by step approach. I do have one question. When stitching the cuff “in the ditch” I noticed you reverse stitched 2/3 times to finish it off. Does this mean I don’t have to use the finish stitch setting on my machine. Just reversing those 2/3 stitches is enough? I’m sorry if this was asked already but I’m definitely subscribed to your channel!
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. If your machine has a lock off stitch, you can use that instead of back tacking 2 or 3 stitches. Whichever way you prefer will work. Thank you for subscribing to my channel!

Thank you for this! I have 2 questions...what is that wonderful marking tool called? I'm still using old chalk and it's not great. Also... do you ever add to the seam allowance to make the cuff a bit wider than the pant? I'm doing a 2" hem on a flared pant and it's really difficult thanks so much for any response!
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
The reason why it's hard to do a cuff or wide hem on a pair of flared pants is because the hem is wider than the leg where the hem will fold up to. You can shape the hem allowance by folding the finished length edge of the pattern piece up and back down to create the cuff. While the paper is folded in place, cut the excess away from the side and inseam edges. When you unfold, you'll end up with a little uneven edges that will lay correctly when folded into a cuff. Let me know if this makes sense! and, I love my Chalk-O-Liners... Here's a link to an ETSY shop that carries them for about 3$ less than other sewing store websites! www.etsy.com/listing/590708674/clover-chaco-liner-pen-style-chalk-blue?gpla=1&gao=1&&CjwKCAiA9tyQBhAIEiwA6tdCrOLBxY3lLsBSHAWDq3VkS465nT_fFoqd0H3-YXLyOiqOXIEPYFrx1RoCqkAQAvD_BwE_k_&:pla-295943914506_c__590708674_541699674&gclid=CjwKCAiA9tyQBhAIEiwA6tdCrOLBxY3lLsBSHAWDq3VkS465nT_fFoqd0H3-YXLyOiqOXIEPYFrx1RoCqkAQAvD_BwE

@JSternDesigns

Great video but I'm still new at this, just bought my first sewing machine. I'm a little confused, you measured 3 lines at 1 1/4 inch spacing, but your first fold is only at 1/2 inch. So how do you come up with the 2 inch fold for the cuff to line up with the finished hem line. Also I want 1 1/2 inch cuffs. Thanks for the really good informatiom
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns Ай бұрын
:) Thanks! Think about it like this: If you press the raw edge under 1/2", you are protecting the raw edge of the fabric. Then fold the hem up 2x the width of the cuff (so if you want a 1 1/2" cuff, fold the hem up 3"). Now that you've got the double width hem folded up (inside the pant leg)... Secure the hem in place by sewing 1/4" away from the top folded edge of the hem. The last step is to fold the hem up on the right side of the pant leg to create the hem. Stitch the hem in place along the side and inseam. (The top edge of the cuff will hide the row of stitching that you used to secure hem allowance to the leg) I hope this helps, Thanks for watching!

So sorry I missed your comment...This tutorial may help (showing how to make a cuffed hem when you cut your pants too short... You would just need to find a coordinating fabric to make the cuff from) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqGqoqKjepKBeqc Thanks for watching!

I found this very helpful but I am assuming if the pants already have a cuff, you take it out and start this process.
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you need to take the cuff apart if you need some of the length to create the new cuff. If the pants are really too long, you may be able to cut the cuff off and use the fabric above it to make the new cuff.

I’m really sorry to bother you again but I do have a question do you have a video that shows how to take in the waist of men’s dress pants I have a suit and I’ve lost a lot of weight and I really like the pants but I haven’t been able to wear them because again I don’t know how to properly take the waist in
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns Жыл бұрын
No bother! You can take the waistband off from a couple inches in front of the side seams... all the way across the back (leave it sewn together across the front after taking out a couple inches from the side seam). Then take in the side and center back seam until the waistline fits. To put the waistband back on, start pinning it back on along the waistline at the side seams... When you get to the CB, you'll see how much you need to shorten the waistband to make it fit. If you have a CB seam, cut it off there... If you don't have a CB seam, you'll create one by cutting the waistband and shortening it to fit there. Let me know if this makes sense. Thanks so much for following along with me!

What if the Cuff is one and a 1/2 inches? How much do you fold down Where you're going to machine stitch
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
If your cuff is 1 1/2” turn the hem up 2 1/2” of hem allowance. Sew along the top of the hem allowance to secure… then fold the 1 1/2” cuff up. The stitching at the top of the hem allowance will be hidden under cuff. Hope this helps

@@JSternDesigns ty sooo much. I have 2 other people who have recently brought me pants one of them wants a 2" cuff and the other believe it or not wants a 3" cuff which I don't like to look so but I guess maybe that's the style for young people I just don't know but how do I do this and make it look right
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
@@lindalilly5086 wow, that is a wide cuff. If you don’t have enough hem allowance. You can sew a strip of fabric to the hem. …just make sure that the seam between the pant leg and the strip will be positioned so it’s hidden under the turned up cuff :)

I’m still confused. I need to see the construction of the cuff. The finished product on the inside. I’ve ironed and then I ironed like 5 times and mine STILL does not look like yours. I’m so confused even though I am following you step by step. I’m going to try one more time. LOL

I'm so sorry I didn't see your comment earlier... Think about it like this. You need to fold the hem up about 1 1/2 times the finished width of the cuff. So if you want a 1" cuff, fold the hem up 1 1/2" .. Then sew along the top edge of the hem allowance to secure it in place. To create the cuff, fold the cuff up 1"... The cuff will cover the seam that you sewed to hold the hem allowance up. Hope this helps!

This just blows my mind - totally chaotic. Would have preferred real pants - not paper. I don't sew or fold paper. An incredibly efficient way to confuse viewers. After watching till 3:58, I'm outta here.

NO J Stern Designs, I'm the one sorry for acting like a cranky old man. I was just frustrated & impatient and confused with the paper idea. I'm sure if I had continued to watch your video I might have changed my opinion and liked it. After all, you've got tons of thumbs up votes - so it must have been good job. Also you're nice enough to invest your time in an attempt to help total strangers for absolutely free! Since you asked, I did go watch a video by an Asian man known for his "Magic Hem" for jeans. I'm sure you know who I'm referring to. He made 4 marks on the pants legs which immediately made me think of your "paper". I understood each step of his teaching but he wasn't perfect by any means. I was unsure when he reverted the slacks back to right-side out rather than inside-out. I was unsure without rewinding a few times whether he was stitching on the inside or outside of pant cuff. Thanks for being kind and humble in your approach to communicate with this grouch. Be well and keep up the hard work.

@@Jeff82556 Not cranky, it's good feed back, I though showing the paper would be a clear way to show how to fold the fabric to make the hem. It's good to know that it's not clear to everyone!
