I might be totally off, but in the movies (which aren’t totally accurate as we all know) a giraffe was moving from picture to picture and the giraffe was the same size as he was in the original picture and when he was moving he was moving through multiple frames without changing his size (sorry I articulated that super poorly)

Talking about the paintings J mentioned that he imagines them not being able to walk closer (or further) from the frame. Page 569 of Deathly Hallows: She smiled, turned, and walked away, not as people in portraits usually did, out of the sides of their frames, but along what seemed to be a long tunnel painted behind her......A tiny white dot had reappeared at the end of the painted tunnel, and now Ariana was walking back toward them... So my theory is that everyone in paintings who are sentient can do this, however most of them feel like they feel like they need to be where they were meant to be while they were in their painting. Either that or Ariana is the only case which she can move in a third dimension making her (one of) the only 3d paintings in the wizarding world.

Wait... You said something interesting about the vanishing cabinet: "How did they never know it was connected?" Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Fred and George stuff one of the Slytherin students into the vanishing cabinet at one point and he either got stuck or lost? Was that after it was broken? Also as to how it got in the room of requirement: the room had a setting that was for all the things people needed to hide or get rid of that they had no use for anymore. Also side note: when Harry goes back to get the diadem he used to mark the location of his potions book from hear six, why didn't he grab the potions book as well since he was there? Seems like a useful item to grab. I suppose the fire was already started at that point? I can't recall what was film and what was book.

I'm super interested in exploring the vanishing cabinet - where it shows up in the books, when did it break, how one ended up in the Room of Requirement and the other in B&B etc. Harry hides the potions book in book/movie 6, and goes back for the diadem in book 7 / movie 8.

Yes! Cabinet was broken first, then he was in limbo sometimes hearing the inside of the store, then attempted to apparate out... The cabinet was stored in the room of requirements afterward... Draco does explain this is how he discovered the connection
