The dollar sign was actually based off of the pillars of Hercules and the S shape is meant to represent a flag between the two pillars. We also use the dollar sign in Canada so unfortunately it is not made of the letter U😂

That doesn't match with either of the explanations on Wikipedia. Their preferred explanation is a combination of P and S for the peso, predating its use by the US dollar. The overlapping U and S is given as an alternate explanation. That the symbol is also used by quite a few other countries is unimportant, as the likes of Canada, Australia, etc got it from the US dollar without regard for where the symbol may have originally come from.

Reading up on the history of the dollar sign I did see that there are multiple explanations as to its origins. I personally try to avoid sites such as Wikipedia as it can be edited by the public and can often make it less credible. However, I did find that the two examples you gave to be in fact explanations to the dollar signs origins but also found there to be quite a few theory’s similar to the one I gave. That is to say there is no exact reason the dollar sign is what is today and we may never know where it truly originates!

The actual way the dollar sign was invented: the two lines were the Pillars of Hercules that guarded the entrance to the Mediterranean. The S was originally a banner that was blowing between the pillars. This was then adopted as the dollar sign. (If you guys read Percy Jackson you would know this 😂)
