There's a part in the movie during the Battle of Hogwarts where Ron casts a spell at Nagini that sort of just gets deflected down her skin. Because it was a green jet, it's always been my headcanon that Ron non-verbally cast Avada Kedavra at Nagini
@JustFlemishMe3 жыл бұрын
Cool theory! Sadly, though... even Voldemort seems to need to say the words. Also, the very fact it was deflected belies it being the Killing Curse. 'Regular' HP magic, not the 'purer', but more erratic old magic, offers absolutely no defenses against the Killing Curse. I used to think the Killing Curse needed the amp of the Elder Wand to destroy a Horcrux, due to Dumbledore stating the importance of Voldemort killing Harry personally. However, this would be inconsistent with what Hermione tells us about destroying Horcruxes. It's far more likely the reason Voldemort was the only 'good' pick is at that point the bond between the two was so strong there was no real telling what would happen; Harry might even survive. Hermione says a Horcrux must be destroyed beyond magical repair. The Killing Curse fits this bill. We also know the Killing Curse separates soul and body. Hermione says on a human, this doesn't damage the soul, but on a Horcrux, the soul is destroyed with the body. If Ron successfully cast a Killing Curse, Nagini should have been destroyed
@JahanMisra3 жыл бұрын
@@JustFlemishMe you can cast it nonverbally. also where does it say it separates soul from body? i’m pretty sure that isn’t true/confirmed. i always saw it as killing someone without harming their body, so against a horcrux where you have to destroy the vessel i don’t think it would do anything
@JustFlemishMe3 жыл бұрын
@Merijn Orsel Riiight, I forgot about the fox! Poor thing. I guess it's possible Belletrix did say the words, it just wasn't stated, but given that every other word seems to be written down, that's a weak argument, I'll admit. OK, so maybe someone as hateful as Bellatrix, or Voldemort, could pull it off. Yeah... Bellatrix put it best. Saying the words isn't enough. You have to put meaning behind it. You have to WANT it. Basically, more passionate and driven individuals have more powerful magic. Conversely, self-doubt, as we see with Ron and Neville, can cripple your magical prowess. Barty Crouch Jr. put it... a bit unfortunately, in my view, but absolutely it is possible to shout 'Avada Kedavra!', even as a wizard, and for nothing to happen. We do know Cruciatus can work imperfectly, so the Unforgiveable curses aren't binary - either works or doesn't. A partly successful Killing Curse would be less a nosebleed (physical damage) and more like Kronos' scythe in Percy Jackson, attacking the soul, as I see it. Of course, I could be wrong. Yeah, maybe that's what happened. Ron could have tried it in desperation and failed to do it right. *Chuckling briefly* Not that it matters, because it happened in the movies and not the books, leaving it non-canon, but still, it's fun getting into technicalities.
@notmiruku29anymore3 жыл бұрын
@@JustFlemishMe but it could be more effective against more vulnerable targets. So like a nonverbal one cast against a fox wouldn't really take much magical ability cuz it's just a fox vs. children with no actual murderous intent against a full-fledged wizard. Also, didnt voldemort kill harry's family nonverbally too? As for Voldy vs. Harry, he had to say it verbally because Harry was already powerful enough and was basically already his equal at that point (i mean the prophecy did say that he would create an equal and that one would kill the other). Also i think, that avada kedavra does destroy the vessel. A dead body is a broken vessel regardless of the damage in it. That's how the horcrux in Harry was destroyed. I think a powerful avada kedavra would kill the horcrux in nagini. Then again, nagini isn't just a random snake, it's also powerful and has magical abilities of her own. And i don't think Ron has a strong enough conviction to cast avada successfully even if he tried.
@JustFlemishMe3 жыл бұрын
@@notmiruku29anymore Hmm. Well, again, we sadly don't know enough about how the Killing Curse works. We do know there's no defense against it, apart from love/sacrifice, part of the 'Old Magic' (which I presume means pre-wand, less controlled but more powerful than basically anything 'regular' magic has to offer). Wooden objects catch fire, and animals, Muggles and wizards all die from it immediately... if you have the strength to do it right. As acknowledged, there could be precedent for the Unforgivable Curses, including the Killing Curse, to have 'measures' of effect. However, apart from the Imperiatus, this seems more determined by the strength of the caster than the target. (Stone and metal are unaffected, but wood catches fire; to me, this is probably because wood is organic. However, plants aren't alive in the same way animals are (and humans are technically animals), and as such the Killing Curse, while it has effect, has a different effect.) Actually, if Voldemort did kill the parents non-verbally, that would be a great argument in favour of at least the sheer presence of magical power not helping any. James was a powerhouse in his own right, extremely gifted, an illegal Animagus who never got caught, someone who figured out these extremely complicated secrets at 15/16. And he and Lily were a real power couple; like the Longbottoms, celebrated Aurors specifically trained to fight Dark Wizards, they thrice defied Voldemort. James on his own without a wand obviously couldn't do much to hinder Voldemort, but together and armed, the pair apparently escaped him before, perhaps even fighting him off. So... Yeah. Voldemort killing them non-verbally says heaps about his own ability, and probably about his psychosis. Not so much aboutthe lack of power in the victim. My best guess as to why he loudly shouted the words is he just loves drama. I actually doubt very much that Voldemort knows any defense whatsoever against Avada Kedavra, and he certainly would be aware if his 'beloved' snake had something of the kind. But perhaps she had something innate, unbeknownst to him; we know after all she's actually a woman with a Blood Curse. The Blood Curse could provide some defense, I suppose, or more likely any number of things could have happened to give her a lasting protection. If enough of her own will was still present, perhaps she could hide it? However, that's irrelevant, since the far likelier answer is Ron just doesn't have what it takes to kill when it comes down to it (which speaks volumes to his good heart).

So he hand built me a variety of different alarm clocks as my Christmas present for the first decade or so of my life. The one I loved the most that still works to this day albeit it's alarm is the most jarring unbelievable wake up, is a tiny functioning steam powered train engine. So it would wake me up with incredibly loud steam whistle sounds and the start up sequence chugs that got faster and louder. The wheels had moving parts and there was a tiny reservoir to put like a thimble of water in to produce actual steam. Which we did once and never again cuz it broke immediately. But it still makes the sounds and does the movements almost 30 years later.

17:50 Actually, that should be 13, I believe. Neither Percy nor Hermione took their Divination OWL's, so you could technically get 13 if you really wanted.
@hollymacnamara99863 жыл бұрын
Actually they said that Hermione achieved 12 but I am pretty sure that she only received 10 (9 outstandings and 1 exceeds expectations in DADA I think)
@hollymacnamara99863 жыл бұрын
Originally Hermione takes 12 however she drops divination during third year and she drops muggle studies after the end of the year to put her on a regular time table of 10 classes for fourth year

@@hollymacnamara9986 You're not wrong, but they're talking about the max amount you CAN get, not just how much Hermione got.
@hollymacnamara99863 жыл бұрын
oh yes sorry, because they said that’s what Hermione ‘got’ I assumed they were talking about how many owls she achieved but rewatching they were talking about how many lessons she ‘got’- how many she was aloud to take
@hollymacnamara99863 жыл бұрын
Also in your original post you said that Percy didn’t take divination, so if Percy achieved 12 OWLs which subject did he take that Hermione didn’t original take? As she did take divination at the start of 3rd year when she was originally taking 12 but if he didn’t he must have taken an extra one ?
@dr5213 жыл бұрын
Harry and Ron each get OWLS in: Charms, Transfiguration, Herbology, Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Care of Magical Creatures, and Astronomy. They both fail: Divination (obviously) and History of Magic (which Harry falls asleep during so he had no chance)

11:02 the question was "when does he use them successfully?" Harry doesn't successfully use Crucio on Bellatrix. She said "you really have to mean it" because it didn't work. Harry successfully uses Crucio on Amycus Carrow in the Ravenclaw common room after Amycus spat in McGonagal's face. Harry then said he now understands what Bellatrix meant

I always interpreted the saying “Give it the Ol’ college try” to mean that when you get to college you have to give it your full effort because you’re not a little kid anymore and you have to try your hardest. Funny how that can be interpreted so many different ways.
@Knowledgesquad13 жыл бұрын
Which has always been ironic to me because most people in College don't try very hard at all. Spending most of their time drinking and partying and doing assesment at the last moment.
