My husband and I went on a cruise for our honeymoon in 2023 & I loved having a cabin with a balcony. The bathroom is the one thing that I would have loved to have changed about the cabin because it was so small, but everything else was nicer than some hotel rooms. Our overall experience was better than I had expected.

I have to be honest, this bathroom is a better size than some other cruise line ships!

We have just come back after a week on Iona. We were in 8139 and the only time it annoyed me was when the deck was wet. We called them the squeaky shoe brigade. They would be out walking early in the morning. Then in the evening you would have the dads walking around the deck with crying kids. The mothers were happy in their cabins and the dads were sent out to get the things to sleep. Apart from that it was fine.

We were in 10.125 on Arvia, a very similar cabin, but our balcony was overlooking the ocean with no walkway. No complaints whatsoever. Our cabin 8.104 last year on Iona was very similar but the bed and the sofa were switched round and we did have a walkway in front of our balcony. Again no complaints.

Very informative and glad I watched as last night we were pricing up a cruise for next March and the money we “saved” by not buying a drinks package (thanks to your video) we found we could get a suite for the same price as a large balcony. I did notice that deck 9 was £300 more than deck 8 and didn’t know why until I watched this video. I think the frosted glass would put me off as I love a full view of the ocean, especially when sailing in and out of port. Thanks for explaining these cabins and what to be aware of. I still think these are great but best to know upfront and make the choice accordingly! If we ever see you on a cruise I’ll buy you and Matthew a drink to say thanks for all these invaluable tips. 👏👏

I think it’s a lovely cabin both inside and out. Enough privacy if you prefer that due its position. Not sure if I would like one right next to more hustle and bustle but that’s just my personal preference. I can imagine some passengers loving those cabins, nice cup of tea on a morning (made with their own cabin kettle💕)stood chit chatting to passers by.

We sail on the Arvia this September. Due to a mistake by the Travel Agent (sending us the deck plan of the Iona in error) we agreed to a conservatory mini suite on deck 8, which we knew was on the promenade deck, but had no other issues. However, the same cabin number on the Arvia has an 'obstructed view' because it is directly opposite one of the infinity pools. We expect the space outside our balcony will be busy and noisy because of this.However, we will keep an open mind and the opinion of the honeymooner was good to hear. I will come back after our trip and let you all know how it was.

@@TravelBlogJamie As promised, we have now returned from our holiday in one of Arvia's Deck 8 Mini Conservatory Suites - directly opposite an infinity whirlpool. What did we think? It's a bit unsettling to have people sat right against the balcony glass, even though the glass is frosted. Most people walking past are not tall enough to see 'over' the balcony but people using the step ladders to get in and out of the whirlpool can easily see over. Although the cabin (8311) is classed as having an obstructed view it is still quite open on either side and it is the lower half of the view that is obstructed. The top half is finished with glass. The noise of the whirlpool was not really a problem other than those using it do talk much louder to be heard over the sound of the jets (I'm sure they don't realise that everyone within earshot can hear their conversation!). All in all, it didn't spoil our holiday but, and this is a big BUT ... there were very few children on the cruise. A crew member told us that there can be upwards of 1,000 kids onboard during school holidays. I am certain that this would give a totally different experience and the area would be busy and noisy all day.

A great blog, very informative and answers the questions before they get raised! Those shallow cupboards are the same as on the Iona. We used them for shoes which stacked up nicely and left more room in the main wardrobe. I really don't know why people complain of no "draws" - on the shelves you can readily see what is where. Just as importantly - not having draws removes the noisey neighbours penchant for slamming them at early and late o'clock!

Hello Jamie, I enjoy your You Tube commentaries. I was on Arvia for 15 nights (the crossing) in January . I enjoyed the ship and food but not the lack of activities which I take part in. It was the only P & O ship without a library, ballroom dancing, bridge games, arts & crafts classes etc. Can you tell me if this is permanent; are they on the ship now? Also found it difficult to find a sun lounger in the afternoons, I dont go out until after lunch. I could only find one amongst the smokers one day, and another day was reduced to lying on my towel on the deck. Not enough deck space. Re the balcony cabins onto the promenade, Fred Olsen retro fitted some like this onto their ships Black Watch and Boudicca many years ago , and they were popular on those ships! Thanks for your intelligent reports. I am on Q M 2 14 nights June 9th
@TravelBlogJamie Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind comments 🙏 We never had a problem finding a lounger at any time of day, actually, and a lot more passengers on our cruise than yours. There is a library but it’s small - I think since this is geared as a family ship it isn’t going to feature the traditional P&O activities. There was bridge on our cruise, however, and an art class. There were many dance classes too inc flamenco, line dancing and salsa.

First cabin was outside restricted view (P&O Aurora) and the second time I decided inside, no port holes (Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas) was fine. My decision was totally based because I did not spend much time in the cabin on my first cruise. I much preferred the P&O cruise due to the variety of evening entertainment which Royal Carribean fell very short,

I went on a cruise on Royal Caribbean many years ago. The room was tiny have no desire to ever go again. It was very expensive.

Looks like P&O have finally got themselves decent beds. We cruised with P&O 😊twice a year most years from 2004to the pandemic when no one went anywhere. All those years the beds were dreadful . So uncomfortable but our cabin was huge this one looks dreadfully cramped. No more cruising for us, had them best years and the best ships but. Not. The best beds.

Oh I have to disagree - it really isn’t a cramped cabin but thanks for your feedback nonetheless

We go on Arvia in a few weeks time and have been 'upgraded' from one of the conservatory mini suites at the back of deck 9, to the middle of deck 8 🤣🤣 I don't mind too much about the location, but to be told this is an upgrade because it's further forward is a little bit disingenuous!! Still looking forwar to the cruise though and thanks for the VLOGS 😀😀

You don’t have to accept an _upgraded_ cabin. A bit late for this trip but a worthwhile tip for your next trip or anyone else who’s reading this.

I love these cabins if it's cheaper for a balcony no problem 🎉 how do you find cheaper balcony cabins ?
@TravelBlogJamie Жыл бұрын
Well on this occasion I called and asked but otherwise, online, search for availability on deck & for cheaper balcony cabins
@JulieWallis1963 Жыл бұрын
Or book a guaranteed balcony cabin. Guaranteed cabins are usually cheaper. Also, for a price saver, book early. The earlier you book the cheaper the price to you.

By far the most important question is... Can you get freshly made coffee delivered in the morning to your cabin with the light breakfast?

Worst cabin if you want to keep yourself to yourself. I would love that cabin and saying hi to everyone that walked past, that's how you get to meet people .

I would have that cabin no problem. I was actually upgraded to one of those at the front on Iona to the Fjords and loved it as you could see both left and right when scenic cruising.
@TravelBlogJamie Жыл бұрын
I think on Iona the barrier isn’t as high at the front so better views than deck 8 on Arvia.

Exactly the same - just the balcony that’s bigger

Pretty standard type of cabin with balcony on many cruise ships. Always go for a balcony cabin. An inside cabin can be claustrophobic but worse of all you get more ship noise as they usually back onto the central corridors and work areas used by staff.
@TravelBlogJamie Жыл бұрын
I have to disagree in that this isn’t standard on most cruise ships as the balconies are often much smaller than this and not all standard balcony cabins have a long couch like this either. Also, I just stayed in an inside cabin sailing the Norwegian fjords that was very very quiet.
@foxman1546 Жыл бұрын
@Travel Blog Jamie Balcony always depends on the cabin location. Fittings might vary slightly, but that looks just like the 14 cabins on various ships I have used. When they build ships, the cabins are factory produced and dropped in place. As for the noise in many inside cabins, that again depends on deck location. If you happen to back onto the galley, you'll know what I mean. I'm not knocking your review, I'm just emphasising that inexperienced first time cruisers should carefully choose their cabin location. An example is finding your sea view obscured by a lifeboat.
@TravelBlogJamie Жыл бұрын
@@foxman1546 I appreciate what your saying but this cabin is not like cabins I’ve had on over 50 cruises - the longer couch, the much larger balcony - there are not many cruise ships in this model out there. You can have a noisy cabin that is a suite - I had this once - not just an inside cabin. It’s ok that we disagree though!

@EuroDC1990 Жыл бұрын
I think what I'd say is that it definitely wouldn't be my first choice of cabin, but (other than the ones at the front which offer no sea view) having one of these wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. All swings and roundabouts, less privacy but can't get a much better location for restaurants and entertainment.
