ESPN NBA draft analyst Mike Schmitz analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the dynamic Ja Morant. I am a Grizzlies fan who watches every game and decided to check out this video just to see if anything stood out in comparison to how he has been in the NBA. Most of this video rings true. I was shocked to see that his lack of a floater was a concern. His floater has been beautiful in the NBA, consistently having the touch to add extra height on it when needed to get it over the reach of a good shot blocker. The outside shooting has been very efficient, but does not shoot them too often. I think he is an underrated shooter and think he will eventually get to the point where he is shooting them at a higher volume. A lot of smart basketball fans here in Memphis. This kid is different than anything we have seen.

This dude did himself a favour by staying his second year. It gave him a chance to develop his jumper making him NBA ready. His got all attributes to become an elite point-gaurd in the league for years.

@King Anime no I meant his a second year player not a one and done. Him staying for his second year gave an opportunity to be better develop as opposed to had he gone his first year.

@@HoustonKhanyile lol, he could go undrafted if he went to the draft last year. He is still an unknown commodity back then playing in one of the worst conference in the country. He work his butt off the previous year, and it shows in his game. But don't tell us he stayed because of what you said, if he had this kind of season last yesr, no doubt he could have entered the draft.
@HoustonKhanyile
@HoustonKhanyile 5 жыл бұрын
@@thatguyluis my point is that good thing he had enough self-awareness to see that he hadn't properly fully developed as a baller and stayed. Most guys would of entered the draft just to secure themselves the bag but he held off improved his game and now he is about to go No 2.

When he's hitting his outside shots and being aggressive attacking the paint, he is Westbrook and he is a beast. When he isn't hitting his shots, he's Westbrick and he actually hurts his team more than the opponents do. Unfortunately, he's more often Westbrick than Westbrook. Otherwise he'd be best player in the league. My Grizzlies went against him many times in the playoffs. Westbrook wasn't the one to fear. It was always Durant. Westbrook would burn you one or two games out of seven. Durant would burn you pretty much every game. And even Tony Allen could only do so much, in order to stop him. Ja Morant is a bit less physically than Westbrook.. and probably always will be, but he does have great basketball instincts. And isn't just a roided up ninja turtle grunting and yelling like Westbrook. It's highly possible Morant will be a better player in terms of team chemistry and running the offense. His scoring could end up being more efficient as well, and that last part is probably going to decide if he's a Star, Allstar or Superstar. Imagine Westbrook with Steph Curry shooting. It probably won't happen, but if it did.. he'd be a crazy good player.

They need a 3. An athletic long player that can defend, shoot the three, and space the floor. Doesn't need to be a superstar, they just need someone who can do their role and give 15 ppg. Memphis has always had a problem with 2's and 3's.. and having a roster that has enough shooters to spread the floor. They've always favored defense over shooting. But JJJ and Ja need floor spacing to be 100% at their best. And yes, Jonas is a beast and he isn't that old yet either. Bruno Caboclo could be that 3 by the way.. but he needs to develop more, in order to become reliable. Ja, Bruno and JJJ.. that's a crazy young and athletic combo if they reached their potential.

Also if Morant is slow to adjust in the NBA he won't be dissected and discussed without that big city spotlight on him like let's say Lonzo or Fultz had to endure. Like D'Aaron was dogshit his rookie year but no one talked about that and he could develop without that pressure.

37% from 3, 62% true shooting, but 14 of 50 on floaters over his career. Think he's a good enough shooter from to keep defenses honest & that's all he really needs, but that float game has to improve and I think it will. Think his defense will get better too since he won't have as big a load to carry in the NBA, though he'll always be at a size disadvantage like Steph or Dame. But I think he'll still be a star in the NBA. The mindset he had to take over the OVC Tourney & the NCAA Tourney game against Marquette was beautiful to watch. He's got all the goods playmaking wise & the athleticism to get to the rim & yam on dudes. He's gonna be a star. He & JJJ are going to be hella fun to watch.

I'm not quite sold on him yet. RJ would be the safer pick (and could easily end up being the best player out of this draft) but it appears that Memphis is already planning on drafting Ja, so perhaps the Knicks will actually end up happy in the end.

My sincerest hope is that he goes to some team with an established 1st option scorer, Like the Cavs with Kevin Love, so that he can stay a true Point Guard and focus on his Defense, He might just be the best Point Guard if the Decade if he truly gets to iron out the kinks.

Dream pick for Memphis, but Pelicans should take him 1st. He's really the best player in the draft. If you're watching these NBA playoffs, then you know even someone as dominant as Giannis in the paint can be shut down. And Zion at 6'7" doesn't nearly have the length Giannis has. He'll be easily controlled by NBA defenses, daring him to beat you from the outside (e.g. Giannis, Simmons, etc...). But a skilled guard that can create is virtually unstoppable. Double team him on the pick-n-roll and he'll create a 4-on-3 power play. Imagine getting Morant and having Holiday at the 2 with AD at center. If AD still wants out, they can still try to land Zion with a trade package to get the 2nd or 3rd pick. Remember, the Grizzlies have All-Rookie Jaren Jackson Jr and it would be redundant to draft the same position. If the Pelicans take Morant #1 then a lot of scenarios can play out, including teams moving down or up, trades, etc...

He dunks like Westbrook but that's about it. In fact, he reminds me more of De'Aaron Fox in terms of having that showtime element about his game with the spicy handles, no look passing, hangtime and ultra-quick speed but Ja is a tad bit more athletic than Fox whereas Fox is faster but also can leap out the gym. I think Fox is a safer comparison and we now see Fox has all-star ability despite being slight of frame. One thing he has that Kyrie and CP3 have is an ability to create space, find gaps in the defense and keep a live dribble until a play emerges with their fantastic ball handling which is something that will be crucial. Ja will be like Trae Young in that one night he can have 35 points and 5 dimes and another night where he can have 17 points and 14 assists. He's a double-double threat every night and if he stays healthy he and Jackson Jr could be the duo we never got to see with Starbury and KG!

Ja needs to watch Steph to learn how to move without the ball and not die on the play. He can also add a decent mid-range package to his arsenal and a much needed floater to finish over shot blocking bigs like AD, Gobert, and Embid. I know he says that he's working on his strength and conditioning and that'll also help him when fighting over ball screens and absorbing body contact when finishing at the rim. The X's and O's will come with time and experience and being diligent when studying game film on an obsessive level. His future looks bright all-in-all 👌🏾 !

It seems like the NBA is shifting from shorter, stronger, bull-dog type point guards (i.e. CP, Kemba, Lillard, Russ) to longer and lankier types like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, John Wall, Lonzo Ball, D'aaron Fox, and Malcom Brogdon.
