Qaramatis attacked Mecca in 317AH. They killed 20000 men and made women and children into slaves. Their leader Abu Tahir removed the Black stone from Kaaba and took it with him. He broke it into two pieces and made these pieces into stepping stones in his toilet.

Fascinating history lesson. I was completely unaware about the history of the hajre aswad (black stone) and of Abu Tahir al-Jannabi's seige of Makkah in 930 C.E. By all accounts he seems to have been a barbaric individual, and his followers were part of the militarized Qaramati sect, which broke away from Sunnis. It is sad that Allah was unable to protect the 30,000 slaughtered pilgrims or the black stone from Abu Tahir. Let's hope that the Saudi authorities regularly sanitize the black stone, given its rough history and the hordes of people who kiss it every day 🙏
