@@bigfudge2031 Yeah and besides that, the fatman has incredibly limited ammo and uses, sure it can essentially be used to trivialize certain fights but it's a huge clunky weapon thats taking up a large percent of your inventory weight and you won't even be using it for most of the game if you take it with you at all since if an enemy gets too close you can't fire the fatman at all or it will kill you. By the time you fight the behemoth you'll have maybe 3 mininukes maximum, and it takes about 2 shots to kill it, if you want more ammo you'll need to go out of your way to find more since I don't think vendors sell fatman shells, and if they do it's incredibly rare.

I've played every Fallout Game that has ever come out for PC. And in this mission I was like WTF? A Deathclaw this early? Some players might not even have one hour in the game. Because the game tricks you. It wants you to waste your ammo for the minigun on the stupid low level raiders so that you have nothing left to fight the deathclaw with. I died a few times in this mission before completing it. As a player going through this quest the first time, if you survive it is because you either didn't waste ammo, used VATS on the deathclaw, or just got extremely lucky. Your second or third try on this quest and you will likely try other things. Conserving ammo, laying traps (if you have the supplies), or maybe even avoiding the final step in the quest altogether until you are better prepared. But long since I played this game, this is the one quest I remember from it. Probably because it does feel so out of place at this stage of the game. It is like Fallout: New Vegas. Pick the wrong direction to travel in the game when you first start out and you are dead. You are not going to survive the creatures you run into. But this particular quest gives you three things. One, an enemy you shouldn't have to be expected to face this early in the game. Two, a set of power armor that you probably won't use afterwards because it get absolutely trashed in the typical in your face fight. And a minigun whose ammo is likely to be completely depleted in the fight and you won't get more of for quite some time. I'm sure many players would be like myself. You use these resources and then store them. Never to use them again because you find better alternatives in your travels before you come back to them.

I know this is super old, but I feel like this is ignoring one major part of this Tutorial/set piece. It's also teaching you that ammo is scarce, and Power Armor (unlike other armor) degrades and needs to be repaired, and that you require Fusion Cores to use. This is as much for "old" players as new, as the way Power Armor works changed from previous games. By the end of the fight, you should have close to no ammo left for the minigun, a couple pieces of fully broken armor pieces and some heavily damaged ones. Without the perk requirement in FO4, anyone can find one of the many Power Armor suits littered around the wasteland and not understand why they can't enter it (no fusion cores) or why the arms and legs are red in the interface. This isn't to give you a bunch of OP stuff off the bat, it's to show you the OP stuff has a cost of use.
@vindix91378 ай бұрын
I do hear what your saying about it showing you the OP early and the cost, (on repeat playthrough a the cost is non existent if you know where to go, lvl 15 currently with 20 fusion cores) but personally I feel like that choice in general is just a choice that I feel like is far removed from any fallout game previously made. It’s the (and forgive my lack of a better term) the “first person shooterifaction” of what used to be a RPG first. I don’t even think the quest is really that bad, I think it’d be a far more highly regarded if a quest with the brotherhood once they’ve given you armor, have to clear a place out and have that death claw battle, I think it just need way more build up to a moment like that.

The power armor is on the box. New players are gonna know just as much as old players how important that armor is. Also, when you try and get in a suit without a core a pop up appears and you can pretty easily assume moving like a snail is not normal. Plus, when you get shot and the red disappears along with a grinding and breaking sound, that’s a pretty good indicator of something going wrong.

Even for new players coming from the tv show, the details of how power armor works in Fallout 4 would not be assumed. If you want the average player to actually learn something, giving them a pop up with zero context or visual re-enforcement is a shit way to go about it. Plenty of games make the most hardy equipment/characters move slower cause of higher defense, whose to say it does not apply here? And considering that I have hundreds of hours in the game and haven't even noticed that sound effect before, I don't think its enough to explain a whole mechanic. Remember that as part of the main quest you have to navigate the glowing sea for which power armor while not technically is practically required. It is extremely important that every player of the main quest knows what power armor is by that point. So why not put it in the intro while associating its use with killing one of the baddest enemies in the glowing sea? I don't buy that the average new player is gonna run off with it and be OP for the rest of the game, in fact I think a vast majority of players will drop it off at sanctuary and literally never use it again unless they think they have to the second they see it uses a consumable limited resource because that is how players treat consumable limited resources in every game ever no matter how easy they actually are to find.

@Argonwolfproject3 жыл бұрын
I felt this way too. In previous games power armor was the holy grail of equipment, the final step in becoming a walking god of destruction, something you didn't get until you were already very powerful anyway. In this game, it's normalized as a tool that you can use at will that has its own advantages and disadvantages. It protects you well, gives you extra strength and has lots of customizable aspects, but it also has to be refueled almost constantly, and fusion cores aren't cheap OR plentiful early-game. To me it was like having a tank in my garage I could take out if a quest presented combat too deadly for my current character to survive (notably, I usually save its fuel and minigun ammo for the Castle raid since I always get bodied hard if I don't suit up). The minigun was somewhat similar, even though it didn't require power armor to use, it rapidly consumed ammunition that isn't easy to acquire early-game en masse, and can even be a pain to keep loaded in the late game. It was admittedly a bit underpowered for its size, but I personally thought the FO3 and New Vegas miniguns were in the same boat, a constant-damage weapon that did barely any damage but could fire for a minute straight to make up for it. It's not too surprising lore-wise, considering it's said to chamber 5mm ammunition which is equivalent to a .22 caliber rifle, and anybody whose ever fired a .22 in real life would probably find the miniguns in 3 4 and New Vegas a bit OVERpowered for the bullets they're firing. That also kind of explains how a person can contain the recoil of a handheld minigun, since .22 rounds create barely-noticeable recoil. Shit. I ramble a lot, don't I?

It would have been a great idea to introduce Rusted Variants and have the Power Armor in Concord be a Quest Item to always break after Deathclaw Boss fight and it would be a way to introduce the concept. Add in a Restoration mechanic that requires a perk given by “training” with certain Factions like BoS or the Institute and you’ll have the ability to restore Rusted Armor pieces. If you want intact pieces without joining either Factions, buying from Merchants or getting lucky with Power Armor Frame Spawns is the option. Hell, make the Faction perks different, BoS gives best Fusion Core longevity and improves Durability, Rail Road makes upgrades cheaper, Minutemen gives discounts for Power Armor Merchants. I think one main point that was glossed over is the fact that not everyone makes the choice to keep using the Power Armour or the Minigun after that quest. I think the devs expected us to store it for later use, (like any sane person), because at that point you wouldn't know how else to find a power core or how common the ammunition for the minigun was, so naturally you'd assume it was a wiser idea to keep it stored away for a rainy day.

I always saw the Power Armor to be a treasure, since in the beginning you're not going to have a bunch of power cores. It's expensive to repair, so you're quite limited with it until later.
@JustAdude2913 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The core is always drained by the time I get to sanctuary and I'm usually out of 5 mm ammo for the minigun. It's not so practical to even carry the minigun so early in the game either because it's super heavy and carry weight that early on is super limited. You can't really afford to carry it around unless you wanna run around with no other weapon or clothes. 10 mm and .38 ammo is more of a priority because the 10 mm pistol and pipe weapons you get in the beginning are more practical to be carrying and it's what you're likely to be using. I don't encounter a lot of 5 mm ammo until later on and to me it's not worth spending all my caps on 5 mm ammo.

This. The armour that it has is barely durable to last the fight, and the power core barely enough charge to get you back to sanctuary. The minigun will probably also run out of ammo during the fight. If you get close enough, then you're gonna meet a 2-3 hit KO even with your power armour

The armour is broken, the few pieces are at under half durability when you get it and the fusion core is only enough to last the fight and maybe get you to red rocket. The cost to repair and the inaccessibility of fusion codes mean the power armour is only useful for this fight, then it goes on the shelf for maybe 8 hours or so at minimum on an average playthrough. The minimum is heavy and has a rare ammunition type especially for early game. Unless you specialise into pack rat and carry virtually nothing, you won't be able to take the gun around nevermind finding enough ammunition to sustain it, especially since the fight with the deathclaw will eat up every last one of those bullets. Coming from someone who’s first introduction into the fallout series was fallout 4: I understand the points made in this video but at least personally I never really experienced the issues discussed. For me, after I got the power armor I walked the settlers back to sanctuary and by the time I was there, I was almost out of my first fusion core. By the time I found my next one I realized how scarce they were and thus regarded the power armor as more of a resource to help me with difficult challenges then something I wore all the time everywhere. With the minigun, it was a similar issue. I had it, but I could never really find enough ammo for it, so I really only ended up using it when I needed to, but when I did it felt really good and gave me a similar adrenaline rush as it did the first time. And for the death claw, As a new player i went into the deathclaw battle and came out of it with a pretty massive fear of deathclaws regardless. The fight was rough for me, two of my pieces or armor were broke and one was in the red, and I was beginning to run low on stimpacks, but I just managed to pull through. I walked away from that fight not thinking “oh yeah I could take those on” but instead “I had all this cool gear and still nearly got my shit rocked”, which I think at least made a far bigger impression on me than if I had simply heard about how dangerous deathclaws were from npcs or setpieces until I was fully ready to fight them head to head.

My thought was "I have a total of 30 bullets left, all for the pipe pistol, I'm essentially wearing a metal exoskeleton with limited protection, and I have no healing left. I'm screwed". That's what made my next deathclaw encounter fun, which was at the very end of a hospital. I was not leaving the top of the generator, because the moment I did I knew that thing would be on me like a rabid dog. I peppered it with grenades, explosives, everything I had and still just barely beat it, with super limited resources. About power armor: in FO4 it's insanely costly to use them in early game because of the energy drain. Fusion cores are so unbelievably rare when you first start playing that you can't possibly wear it all the time. It's meant to be kept as a backup to help with things you can't handle
@Craigadential Жыл бұрын
Use the Fusion cores until they only have like 1% energy left, then go sell them. You get pretty solid caps for them, & you get the same amount of caps whether they are 100% full, or 1% left. The mitigating factors for these two powerful items are there, on your first playthrough, at least. For the mini gun, you’re given 500 rounds, and most players will burn through most of that on the deathclaw the first time. Because they don’t know it’s weak spot is it’s stomach. Even if you do conserve ammo, the mini gun eats through ammo quickly, and you’re not replacing it until Diamond City, unless you already know where to get more. The Power Armor is also mitigated by fuel and repairs. Fusion Cores are not plentiful early on, and it is only through lots of play time that we know where to get as many as possible for free in the early areas. Most new players found themselves running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere and barely able to move. Likewise, it only takes a few encounters for bits of the Armor to start breaking. Even if you’re efficient at scrounging up materials, places to repair it aren’t always nearby. Yeah, fast travel can trivialize this issue. But again, for newcomers, that overpowered Armor ends up collecting dust in Sanctuary fairly quickly. Of course, playing the game a few times now, I would be confident in running and maintaining a power armor/heavy gunner build no problem. But the first time? These two items are played with for a short while, then discarded as they became too much hassle.

It's incredibly easy to find both Minigun ammo and Fusion cores in FO4, I'd say 60% of interiors have them and the Northern area you start in has multiple spawns for them miniguns also become fairly common around Boston which makes it easy to find ammo for free. Overall if you explore liberally, as most Fallout players do, and conserve minigun ammo you could probably make it to Boston without ever taking your power armor off and without ever running out of Minigun ammo. The drive to be able to more liberally use your power armor is something the games own pacing destroys almost immediately with how many Fusion Cores it gives you it's another layer of what makes that scene disappointing because it makes you realize that what you have isn't as special or rare as you might think. For the price of maybe 2 or 3 hours of exploring you can get multiple sets of power armor and a half dozen fusion cores without ever facing an enemy over level 10, plus you have a Minigun to facilitate making that exploration easier.

Put him in a custom raider power armour with you needing your own set just to equal him. He’s tough-maybe kills a Yao-Guai or a rad scorpion or a pack of feral ghouls in front of you. And script the power armour to run out of energy when the battle with Grouse ends. You can retrieve it later of course. That way you get a taste of power armour without outright getting it immediately. And perhaps a synth chip would drop, explaining his strength and making Synth enemies seem scary later on.

It would have been cool if they redid the power armour tinkering as well. Make it so you need a few levels of the armourer perk too repair and modify your armour. Then after the armour you get breaks down, you would get a sidequest to repair it which would either be done by finding a skilled mechanic or levelling up armourer to be able to make the repairs yourself. They felt comfortable giving you the Power Armor early on because the Fusion Cores were supposed to be the limiting factor. The idea was that you couldn't just tramp about the Commonwealth in your human-shaped tank because you wouldn't necessarily be able to keep it fueled. And if the cores were less common that might have worked, but as soon as you realize the general traits that signify the presence of a Fusion Core (industrial or military area, brightly-lit power station) it becomes trivial to run that thing forever. Nevermind that there is another suit every quarter mile or so and a decent chance that each one has a fully topped-up core.

I think the intent was exactly my experience: You get a taste of the power available to you mid to late game (often happens at the start of many games) through the set piece, but the scarcity prevents them from being something you can depend on early on. Sure if your on your 100th, 500th, or 1000th hour you've got every item located, probably tons of mods, and more that makes these items usable or even obsolete near the start of your playthrough. But gor a new player, (or even one starting only a second or third play through) power cores and minigun ammo are going to be very rare and hard to come by in early levels. That is the balancing factor. You get these powerful items to show off what is available, but essentially have to park them until you've progressed further.

I like this, it solves so many problems. It let's you use the power armor early on, and make you feel like a badass against the human enemies, the minigun can be made stronger, and at the end the power armor is taken away from you again preventing further power creep. It also still keeps the deathclaw as a very hard enemy which is not to be defeated at level 5.

I'm pretty sure that's why they introduced the system of fusion cores. I recently finished new vegas for the first time after playing fo4 countless times and I have to agree, deathclaws in the other games are wild. I first got power armour after raising my reputation with ncr to unlock the safe house which is quite a lengthy process. But unless you're looking up fixed fusion core locations then you would have trouble finding them (or I did). Also 5mm ammo is found on higher level super mutants and raiders making it hard to find ammo early into the game, sort of forcing you to use early guns like the 10mm and pipe weapons.
@mikiessj43 жыл бұрын
yea I came looking for this comment... they do hand you a really strong armor but it's running off a limited battery... and they do hand you a really strong gun but good luck finding enough ammo to feed that beast in a meaningful way. I always kept the armor and minigun stashed at my base until later levels when I could keep it "fueled' so to speak. It never felt imbalanced to me.
@RedFloyd4693 жыл бұрын
Also, that's not power armor that the ncr is using, it's "salvaged" power armor. Basically, the inferior version of ACTUAL power armor. NCR stripped apart the good stuff to gain more mobility, sacrificing protection in the process. (that said, the SPA is actually as heavy as regular PA, so it makes very little sense to do this regardless.) It also means that the NCR has no idea how to have the power armor actually function as it should. Brotherhood members don't "feel" the weight of the armor on them, but ncr soldiers do. "Feels like carrying a brahmin on your back" -some NCR guy. Because NCR couldn't figure out how the fusion reactors worked and how to properly train for power armor, they just removed the parts that hindered it and sacrificed quality for it. Now, SPA is still pretty strong for mid-game, but that's also why it fits so well. Once you reach end-game, SPA is obsolete and either Brotherhood PA or Remnant PA becomes the go-to heavy armor. (That said, I prefer light-medium armor over SPA, any day. The extra few DT are less valuable to me than travelling speed and inventory weight.) Not to mention that the SPA gets outclassed by the desert ranger armor and Riot gear from the DLC's. Better or equal protection for less weight and no drawbacks. As for the video: I think the issue here is less about balancing the game, and more about action vs reward. Fallout 4 rewards you with power armor and a strong weapon very early on, for incredibly menial tasks. Once the fusion core runs out and the 5mm ammo is gone, you'll realize you won't be getting that power fantasy for a while, and the major driving force behind improving yourself for that power trip is now obsolete. The only thing you can do is try and get that power trip AGAIN later down the line. Compare this to, say, new vegas, where getting to end-game, getting power armor, and getting some badass weapons along the way (think the Anti-materiel rifle, Gauss rifle, etc...) actually turns you into an unstoppable force, a just reward for all the hard work.

You're really overthinking this. The minigun isn't very powerful, its ammo is not common enough to justify carting it around early game, the power armor starts in rough enough shape that it can feasibly lose a piece or two during the encounter you acquire it, and fusion cores aren't so casually accumulated by new players. It's a boon to heavy gunner and/or power armor builds who know what they are doing, but newbies are going to wear out the little power spike long before they even reach Diamond City.

They balanced that with fusion cores and scarce ammo. 5mm is uncommon like most big gun ammo. 2mm, railroad spikes, etc. Same with fusion cores even if you play on easy and you defeat the deathclaw while it's roaring, the hike to DC would probably have you abandoning the armor outside the gate. Also the Fatuus are a cake walk compared to Abyss mages. Take out the hydro healer first then opposite elements for those with shields.

Actually, taking your perspective into account, they could have had the minutemen sally out alongside you to face the deathclaw and maybe even the raiders. Thinking about it, that's a way cooler idea, and it really gives you a reason to actually like and side with the minutemen! It doesn't make you feel like as much of a badass, but it's great character development, gives you many (unkillable) allies to take down the deathclaw, and cements it as an enemy out of your league, making it all the more badass when you take one down solo later on!

Honestly, especially for preston, this could have been a huge setpiece moment for him as well. If i remember, Preston himself states he can lead people in battle, but the general needs to be something more. This could have been the perfect moment to show him leading people in battle- having him order someone to throw a grenade as a distraction, and- as you said- cements the deathclaw as something that needed multiple people under a strong commander with high-tech assistance in order to take down (maybe alongside other people's comments where the suit becomes unusable somehow at the end, maybe to be repaired later, and has the minigun caught in its grip)

Also, I forgot to add, new players to the franchise would have a different reaction than the rest of us. Deathclaw has potential to scare the crap out of a new player, especially if you overuse the minigun and face a deathclaw with almost full health up close. That is probably the reaction they were going for. Then you realize you can take the hits but you need to still have ammo for this battle. First playthrough, I definitely ran out of ammo and had to kill the deathclaw another way. I also only learned about deathclaws' higher DR to energy weapons later.

Funny how this was never an actual problem to me as I just left the power armor to Sanctuary right after killing the deathclaw along with minigun. I can't recall the primary source, but I'm reasonably certain that I read a story about the Concord Deathclaw/Power Armor fight - namely, that it was included as an "OMG AWESOME" set piece not so much for the benefit of the player, but for the benefit of a Bethesda executive. I think the theory was that the suits didn't have the time/patience to wait until the 2nd act of the game to see something spectacular. I do agree with ItsJabo's conclusions on the negative consequences. If anyone happens to have a link to the story I'm remembering, hit me up in a reply - I'd like to re-read it.
@courier69603 жыл бұрын
If the problem was the suits wanted to see something cool, for the tech demo set the character up as being in act 2 and build up the encounter! That or show some cool side content (but shocker Fallout 4 probably has the least amount of decent side quests and content out of all of the main Fallout games). The newer isn’t to neuter your game just to please some guys who don’t really need it! At the end of the day the executive will make his money, don’t go executing your pacing and story just to please the,!

@@smeggiamagarwine I was wondering if they could have the power armor "sent in for repairs" by Sturges as he seems to know a decent amount of repairs. Then after some quests, the power armor is good as new. And if miraculously the player managed to keep the power armor in good condition after the fight, just have it malfunction and chalk it up to long period of neglect and have it looked after by Sturges. As for the gun, no clue but I guess it could be done similarly, or that one of the settlers need it for early defense while Sole Survivor explores.

Considering you constantly need more and more fusion cores to use the power armor I'm not sure it makes a difference. You only get a half-full fusion core to start with... and in a normal progression through the game I think it's a couple hours in before you are likely to find a fresh one. So you can't really use the power armor all the time once you have it, you have to pick and choose when you think you are going to need it balanced against how many cores you have found.
@heirofaniu3 жыл бұрын
@@davepeesthepool There are at least three fusion cores, and a second set of power armor (albeit an incomplete suit), in a straight line extending pretty much due south from Sanctuary which you can access immediately. That's not counting the FC and armor in Concord btw, and that's just in the space between Sanctuary and Vault 81.
