I lived in Kenya for a year. One weekend we went to Mount Elgon where there are elephant caves (the size of huge airplane hangers with openings covered in dinosaur-sized moss and stunning waterfalls). On the winding mountain roads, we heard what sounded like bulldozers crashing through the forest below us. Turned off our car, got out and listened: It was elephants, just walking through the trees and knocking them over like toothpicks. (Imagine the sound of that one branch in this video cracking...then multiple that by 10 branches per second, as an entire herd moved past trees standing in their way!)

@@christopherbellore3511 Yes--it was a volunteer medical missions trip after college, back when I thought I wanted to be a doctor! I have so many amazing stories (drew an 8-foot-long worm out of a man's swollen hip, amputated a toe with dental floss, etc.) and need to write a book one day, just to take people into that experience. We all took the now-controversial hydroxychloroquine to prevent malaria...prophylactically...with no side effects. I was the clinic's pharmacist and we Rx'd chloroquine all day long (as easy to get as aspirin) to cure malaria. Amazing miracle drug. I have to wonder about big pharma, which doesn't want such a cheap, time-tested, easy med to cancel plans for a billion-dollar Coronavirus vaccine/patent on expensive cure.

@@epicepidemic7131 Your experience sounds familiar. Spent 9 years in Mali. Sewed up a kids leg after he was run over by a donkey cart. Had no anesthetic, just waited until he stopped screaming and passed out. Lots of babies being born. Guinea worm occasionally. The USA under Trump grabbed up so much stock of chloroquine there wasn't enough for folks in West Africa. Shame.

Jabu is so smart and loving... I think he actually wanted to put the branch BACK ON THE TREE after he had his snack! 3:42 is his second try to bring the branch back to the tree! You can see a look of "Well, I really tried" at 4:19 on...esp at 4:32 where he looks straight at the camera like, "I really did try my best. *I think it's broken."* Maybe he didn't want to end up hurting the tree. He just wanted a little snack.

If Jabu had more soft things (delicious soft things) to eat wouldn't his teeth last longer...what seeds might you plant that could provide such softer diet? How much would commercial sized bags of them cost...are they locally available (after the quarantine lifts of course), and how much $ would you need to secure a few bags of such? "Wild" sugar cane? Watermelons randomly planted around your local grassland? (to be hunted for kind'a like Easter Eggs)...just a few examples. Also I'm concerned about his tusks and their health.
@livingwithelephantsfoundat54444 жыл бұрын
Frank, like horses it is actually important for them to eat roughage to to wear their teeth down. They are also adapted to eat a high roughage low nutrient diet. Jabu gets lots of extra veg and elephant pellets and supplements. We are not allowed to plant alien plants species in the wilderness area that is Jabu's home for fear of them becoming invasive. Jabu's tusks are in great shape. He would LOVE to hunt for watermelons in the bush. There is a wild melon that he also loves and he is pretty good at planting those himself as the seeds come out in his dung. I love your concern for the big guy. He is doing just great though.
