The context was actually lightly based on an old Indian movie named Lagaan (tax) where they showed the condition of a fictitious Indian village under the British rule before independence . There was a British commander who gave the villagers a condition to not pay their tax as their was no harvest that year . The condition was if the people of the village can defeat them in a cricket match then they will be exempted from tax for 3 years which the main protagonist of the movie named Bhuvan (Amir khan) accepted . Though their was no such incidence in the history of India under British rule but the condition of the Indian village shown in the movie was very mush real . As the Indian's that time didn't know what cricket was so the love affair of the commander secretly taught the villagers how to play and in the end Bhuvan and his team won against the British team in their own sport.

they are not over dramatising it! they were parodying the movie Lagaan! strange to me that you watch all current Bollywood junk yet have not still watched the classic Indian movies from the past years like Lagaan and others. I will recommend you to start focussing on watching the Indian all-time classics and other cult movies and more. And start with Lagaan now. Which, by the way, was nominated for an Oscar!
